Aspiring Horror Cinematographers: Learn How Ari Aster and Ti West Scare the Hell Out of You
Image
Horror is one of the richest genres to explore tension, mood, and emotion. For cinematographers, it’s a playground for visual experimentation: From the shadowy monster movies of the 1930s to the neon nightmares of modern indie horror, the genre offers endless opportunity to push style and technique.

For emerging cinematographers, understanding how the “X” trilogy, “I Saw the TV Glow,” and “Midsommar” adapted lighting, lenses, formats, and color science to evoke fear and beauty is essential. These DPs didn’t just point and shoot; they designed entire emotional systems.

Eliot Rockett, frequent collaborator of director Ti West, approached the “X” trilogy as three discrete visual challenges. For “X,” the goal was to evoke the texture of ‘70s grindhouse horror. They shot digitally, but Rockett leaned on era-accurate...

Leprechaun Reboot Gets an Unfortunate Update 2 Years After Announcement
Image
Fans of the Leprechaun horror franchise longing for an update on the new reboot movie that was announced in June 2023 are in for some bad news. It's been more than a year since any update on the project. Now, Bloody Disgusting reports that Lionsgate, which has been working on the Leprechaun reboot, has confirmed that director Felipe Vargas (Milk Teeth)is no longer attached to the project.

The new Leprechaun film was announced by Lionsgate in June 2023. At that time, Vargas was confirmed as the film’s director, with the script being written by Mike Van Waes, who also penned the upcoming Lilo & Stitch live-action film. Roy Lee is set to produce the Leprechaun reboot. Thus far, Lionsgate has not announced who will be replacing Vargas as the film’s director.

Vargas’ new horror film, Rosario, starring Emeraude Toubia (Shadow Hunters), Emilia Faucher (Snow White), David Dastmalchian, and Paul Ben-Victor...

‘Leprechaun 3′ at 30: Warwick Davis’ Favorite Sequel Took a Twisted Trip to Vegas
Image
Brian Trenchard-Smith, the British-Australian director of such Ozploitation classics as Turkey Shoot and Dead End Drive-In, eventually made the big move to Hollywood in the early 1990s, and in due time, he was entrusted with the third installment of that decade’s most madcap horror franchise. Amazingly, Trenchard-Smith made his mark on a genre series already known for its schlocky pleasures and cheesy execution. And for those who prefer the wackier and more untamed entries in the Leprechaun universe, they really have Trenchard-Smith to thank; he steered these films in a cracked direction that still has fans talking to this day.

What better person to direct a Leprechaun sequel than the man who once said subtlety isn’t his middle name. Trenchard-Smith, a director of many self-deprecating quotes, made his Hollywood horror debut with another sequel, Night of the Demons 2, before boarding Leprechaun 3. In fact, it was his relationship...

Ten Best: Straight-to-Video Horrors of the 1990s
Image
The 1990s were a golden era for straight-to-video horror films. While these productions often had limited budgets and resources, they compensated with creativity, bold storytelling, and memorable scares. Here’s a countdown of just Some of the straight-to-video horror gems from that decade.

10. Ice Cream Man (1995)

Plot: A deranged ice cream vendor terrorizes a suburban neighborhood.

Why It’s Great: Starring Clint Howard in a wonderfully creepy performance, Ice Cream Man is a cult favorite that blends absurd humor with gruesome horror. Its mix of over-the-top kills and campy charm makes it unforgettable.

9. Ticks (1993)

Plot: Genetically engineered ticks wreak havoc on a group of troubled teens at a wilderness retreat.

Why It’s Great: With impressive practical effects and some genuinely disturbing moments, Ticks delivers gooey creature-feature thrills. Plus, it features a young Seth Green and an unhinged performance by Alfonso Ribeiro.

8. Leprechaun 2 (1994)

Plot: The titular leprechaun returns to...

Devon Sawa reacts to Idle Hands remake announcement
Image
Stranger Things and Ghostbusters: Afterlife / Frozen Empire actor Finn Wolfhard recently made his feature directorial debut with a horror comedy called Hell of a Summer, which he directed alongside Billy Bryk, who also appeared in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to watch the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and gave it a 5/10 review than can be read at This Link. Hell of a Summer has secured a U.S. distribution deal with Neon, and will receive a theatrical release sometime in 2025 – and earlier this week, we learned that Wolfhard and Bryk have already lined up their second genre project, as they’re writing a remake of the 1999 horror comedy Idle Hands, which they might end up directing as well. The Ghostbusters franchise’s Jason Reitman is on board to produce the film. But what does original Idle Hands star Devon Sawa think of this announcement?...

7 Horror Villains Who Are Secretly Terrible At Killing Their Victims
Image
Not all horror villains are successful murderers; some like Ghostface from Scream and Annabelle relied on others for their kills. Mister Babadook and Lubdan the Leprechaun were terrifying but ultimately terrible at actually killing their intended victims. The Beast from Poltergeist failed to capitalize on opportunities to kill, making them more of a menacing presence than an effective killer.

Horror villains have kept audiences on the edge of their seats and fearing for their lives, but some were simply terrible at actually killing their victims. The best horror movies have introduced all kinds of villains to audiences, from the intelligent and sneaky to the brutally violent. These titles became known as the slasher film subgenre, focused explicitly on gruesome deaths, and became a hugely popular subgenre. As unhinged scenes of extreme violence and torture played out on the silver screen, several characters lost their lives at the hands of some...

The Correct Order To Watch The Leprechaun Franchise
Image
"I asked him with my eyes to ask again yes and then he asked me would I yes to say yes my mountain flower and first I put my arms around him yes and drew him down Jo me so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will watch the 'Leprechaun' movies."

So went the final words of James Joyce's "Ulysses," a vital literary classic in the Western Canon, and one of the only major Irish novels devoted entirely to the watching of the "Leprechaun" film series.

The "Leprechaun" film series bears the distinction of lasting for 25 without ever offering up at least one legitimate classic. Several slasher series begin strong, or have follow-up sequels along the way, even if the vast majority of their sequels are bad or uncreative. John Carpenter's "Halloween" from 1978, for example,...

Syfy Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day 2024 With an All-Day ‘Leprechaun’ Franchise Marathon
Image
You can always count on Syfy to program the Leprechaun movies for St. Patrick’s Day, and we’re happy to report that this year is no exception. Syfy will be airing an all-day Leprechaun Franchise Marathon for St. Patrick’s Day once again, taking place on Sunday, March 17!

The good news? They’re showing All 8 Movies throughout the day, including 2018’s Leprechaun Returns. The bad news? As always, the movies are playing out of order.

The Leprechaun franchise kicked off with Mark Jones’s original horror-comedy in 1993, which was followed by five Warwick Davis-starring sequels, a reboot, and later Leprechaun Returns in 2018. Even though Leprechaun Returns was a sequel to the original movie, Linden Porco took over the role of the title character, played by Dylan Postl for Leprechaun Origins.

Here’s the full schedule for this year’s marathon…

’93 Leprechaun director gives thoughts on sequels
Image
Halloween might be the next major holiday on the calendar but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a little luck o’ the Irish. Ahead of Halloween and to mark the occasion of the first Leprechaun movie’s 30th anniversary, director Mark Jones is giving his take not on the horror flick that launched an eight-movie (so far) franchise, but its sequels both good, bad and whatever Origins was going for.

Speaking with Comic Book Resources, director Mark Jones said he is a fan of most of the sequels, although there is one entry that stands out as notably bad. “I was a little bit involved in [Leprechaun 2]. I was a producer on [Leprechaun 2], but then I went off to do other stuff. I thought Leprechaun in the Hood was great. There’s a whole fan base there. Everyone but [Leprechaun: Origins], and all...

Leprechaun Director Mark Jones Celebrates the Film's 30th Anniversary
Image
To children, leprechauns have an innocent reputation of being the supernatural creature printed on the Lucky Charms cereal box. To director Mark Jones, leprechauns were a bit more devious. As the horror-comedy franchise Leprechaun makes its way to streaming on Hulu for its "Huluween" event this spooky season, Jones looks back on creating the Warwick Davis and Jennifer Aniston-led film that spawned seven movies.

Warwick Davis plays the titular role, where he hunts down civilians on a farm for a pot of gold he believes they stole. Leprechaun was also Aniston's film debut before she became famous on the highly acclaimed and popular television series Friends. In an interview with Cbr, director, and writer Mark Jones talked about how he took a low budget, a charismatic cast, and a mischievous vision to create the 1993 film and hinted at another Leprechaun installment in the future.

Cbr: Leprechaun has grown to...

Every Leprechaun Movie Ranked, Worst To Best
Image
The Leprechaun movies balance absurdity and terror within the horror genre, delivering both ridiculous spectacle and frightening moments. Despite being absurd horror films, the franchise's installments vary in quality. They still manage to entertain with extreme kills and Warwick Davis' standout performance as the bloodthirsty Leprechaun. While not critical hits, the Leprechaun movies have capitalized on turning an innocent holiday into a grisly monster franchise. Leprechaun movies have dominated the St. Patrick's Day theme since the 1990s and continue to generate sequels.

The Leprechaun movies fit into a special niche in the horror genre where a movie can be both a ridiculous spectacle and a terrifying sight. Even under this consideration, the franchise's many installments are all over the map in terms of quality. The Leprechaun movies are clearly not trying to do anything innovative or sophisticated, so many of the would-be criticisms seem redundant to point out. They’re...

Leprechaun Director Confirms a Director's Cut of the Warwick Davis Horror-Comedy Exists
Image
Leprechaun director Mark Jones reveals there is a director's cut of the horror-comedy, originally intended to be a comedy-horror. The film was initially planned as a kid's horror movie with a comedic twist, similar to live-action Scooby-Doo, but the studio wanted more violence. The biggest difference between the director's version and the theatrical release is the amount of violence, with cute scenes being removed.

During an exclusive chat with ComicBook.com, Leprechaun director Mark Jones discussed his 1993 classic and revealed that there is a director's cut of the horror-comedy.

Leprechaun was directed and written by Jones and starred Warwick Davis, Jennifer Aniston, Ken Olandt, Mark Holton, Robert Hy Gorman, Shay Duffin, and John Sanderford. The film follows an evil leprechaun (played by Warwick) who goes on a murderous rampage in order to recover his gold.

While its premise might sound silly, Leprechaun proved to be a hit with audiences and went...

The Leprechaun Horror Franchise Is Ready For Its Comeback As Lionsgate Eyes A Reboot
Warwick Davis in El duende maldito (1992)
To date, there have been eight films in the "Leprechaun" series. The first film, released in 1993, starred Warwick Davis as the title character, an evil, smiling immortal monster with an obsession with his pot o' gold, a shoe fetish, and a propensity for murder. Davis would return for "Leprechaun 2" (1994), "Leprechaun 3" (1995), "Leprechaun 4: In Space" (1997), "Leprechaun in the Hood" (2000), and "Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood" (2003). Although parts 3 and 4 (both directed by stalwart exploitation veteran Brian Trenchard-Smith) are passably entertaining, and "In the Hood" is crazy enough to be distracting, the series is pretty...

Indie Horror Month 2022: A Look Back on the Independent Horror Scene of the 1990s
Image
While the 1970s and 1980s were strong decades for independent horror filmmaking, the 1990s proved to be a somewhat interesting time, as there seemed to be an overall tendency for this realm of the industry to be focused on making sequels and creating franchises out of ’80s horror hits, with a few landmark indie horror projects in the mix as well. And since sequels were so dominant at that time, I thought it only made sense for us to start there for this look back on the history of ’90s indie horror cinema.

After the 1980s proved to be a great time for indie horror, where so many movies ended up being successful due to a combination of theatrical releases and the increasing popularity of home video, it feels like in the decade that followed, many producers working in the independent realm wanted to capitalize on those successes by turning...

The nascent streaming service also shares content with HBO, with new films coming like “Jojo Rabbit” out Aug. 1, “Birds of Prey” out Aug. 15, “Richard Jewell” out Aug. 8, and “Queen & Slim,” out Aug. 22. The upcoming series “Lovecraft County,” which mixes fact and fantasy and takes place in 1950s Jim Crow America, arrives Aug. 16.

Leaving throughout the month include, tragically, all eight “Harry Potter” films, which will be gone after Aug. 25. Other absolute classics like “Good Will Hunting,” “You’ve Got Mail,” and both “Kill Bill” movies will be gone after Aug. 31, so watch them while you can.

Below is the full list of everything coming and going in August.

HBO Max Announces Over 130 New Movies/TV Shows For August
HBO Max is continuing to pull from Warner Bros.’ incredible back catalogue of movies, with August bringing a huge number of new titles to the streaming service. With over 130 new pieces of content, the list of upcoming arrivals encompasses classic films of all kinds, from Oscar winners to comedies, horrors to family pics and, of course, tons of blockbusters.

Elsewhere on August 1st, some of the more notable new titles include Before Sunrise and its sequel,...

HBO Max New Releases: August 2020
Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors in Lovecraft Country (2020)
It’s August 2020 and that can only mean one thing: HBO Max is about to enter Lovecraft Country.

Over the years HBO (and by the transitive property its new HBO Max streaming offshoot) has grown accustomed to debuting a buzzworthy new TV show or limited series every couple of months. For August 2020 that will almost certainly be Southern Gothic horror series Lovecraft Country. The J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele-produced thriller arrives on August 14 on HBO and HBO Max.

Other strong HBO Max originals arriving in August include the documentary Class Action Park (release date Tbd), Seth Rogen-starring comedy An American Pickle (Aug. 6), and finales for I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Doom Patrol, and Perry Mason.

Of course, HBO Max is designed to house much of WarnerMedia’s content across many mediums. That means some recent movies on note like Jojo Rabbit (Aug. 1), Richard Jewell (Aug. 8), and Birds of Prey (Aug.

Saw 2 Director Wants a True Leprechaun Reboot with Warwick Davis
Darren Lynn Bousman at an event for Abattoir (2016)
This weekend marked another St. Patrick's Day, and to celebrate, writer-director Darren Lynn Bousman took to Twitter to let us all know that he still wants Lionsgate to hand him the keys to a semi-classic horror franchise: Leprechaun. Yeah, true story.

Evidently, Darren Lynn Bousman wants to bring back original franchise star Warwick Davis and send the little green guy back in time to the Colorado Gold Rush. Which sounds pretty awesome. Specifically, Bousman says this.

"It's that time of year again where I remind my good friends at @Lionsgate that I still want to reboot the Leprechaun movie (Again)... Lep gets in a time machine and goes back to the Colorado Gold Rush. You guys have my number, I'll be sitting by the phone."

Screenwriter Scott Milam, who worked with Bousman on his remake of Mother's Day, then tweeted this.

"We pitched Lionsgate, remember? I wanted to cast William Shatner...

10 Future A-List Actors Who Made Horror Movies
Matthew McConaughey at an event for El niño y el fugitivo (2012)
We all have to start somewhere, right? Despite its history of cinema classics and major box office success, the horror genre is often maligned as somehow less worthy of respect than other types of films. For whatever reason, it's not as easy to get an A-list actor to headline a horror movie as it should be. But beggars can't be choosers. Plenty of Oscar-nomintaed thespians had no problem making horror flicks on the way up. Today, we're looking at 10 future A-List actors who made horror movies before they became big time celebrities.

Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zellweger

There may be no greater example of the phenomenon we're talking about here than the fourth film in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series, which starred two future A-list actors and is demonstrative of the shrewd and cynical strategies of Hollywood. In 1994, relative unknowns Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zellweger had already been in Dazed and Confused...

Director & Screenwriters Revealed for Film Adaptation of Zombie Novel Eat, Brains, Love
Not long after acquiring the release rights to the buzzed-about Tragedy Girls, the studio Gunpowder & Sky is now taking a big step forward with their film adaptation of Jeff Hart's romantic zombie comedy action road trip (sounds fun, doesn't it?) novel, Eat, Brains, Love.

Deadline reports that Gunpowder & Sky has lined up Rodman Flender to direct the film adaptation of Eat, Brains, Love from a screenplay that will be written by Mike Herro and David Strauss.

Originally published in 2013, Eat, Brains, Love follows two high schoolers who are infected with a zombie virus, eat a good portion of their friends, and end up fleeing from the government and their teen psychic who is sent to capture them.

A play on words from the title of Elizabeth Gilbert's novel Eat, Pray, Love, Hart's "rom-zom-com," as fans of Shaun of the Dead might refer to it as, was followed by a...

Why Scream: The TV Series is Worth Your Time
When it comes to genre television series as of late, there are a few shows that get more love than others. And since I finally caught up with the recent season two finale of Scream: The TV Series, I thought now would be the perfect time to tip my hat to this underrated series that not only wears its horror-loving heart so very clearly on its sleeve, but also keeps the mystery-fueled spirit of Wes Craven’s films alive and kicking, all while showcasing a lot of fantastic talent behind the camera as well.

And as much as I adore those first two factors, it’s that final part—the way Scream: The TV Series has utilized some incredible directorial talent—that has made me a staunch supporter of the show, as I’d argue that Scream may the best genre series that most fans have consistently overlooked ever since it debuted last summer.

Break Launches ‘Movies On Break’, A Free Streaming Service Of Lionsgate’s Feature Films
The upcoming Smosh movie isn’t the only project on which Defy Media and Lionsgate are collaborating. In addition to the film starring the duo behind one of YouTube’s most successful channels (and one of the internet’s most successful young adult brands), the companies just announced the launch of Movies on Break. It's "a curated selection of 200 films from the Lionsgate library” that are ad-supported with pre-roll and mid-roll commercial spots, but otherwise free-to-view onto a section of the Defy Media owned-and-operated Break.com website that draws over 18 million unique monthly viewers.

Movies on Break launches with 80 films categorized into a handful of separate verticals with enticing names, such as They Were In That?, Never Ending Sequels (which currently features Leprechaun 2, 3, 4, Leprechaun In The Hood, and Leprechaun Back 2 Tha Hood), 420 Flicks (which currently features The Stonged Age and Cheerleader Ninjas), Before They Were Famous (which currently features...

The 7 Best Kill Scenes from the Leprechaun Franchise!
Eleven years after the final installment in the original series, the Leprechaun franchise was brought back from the dead this week courtesy of Lionsgate and WWE Films, who together released Leprechaun: Origins (review) onto VOD outlets this past Tuesday.

The Warwick Davis incarnation of the titular character had a reign of terror that lasted from 1993 until 2003, the original franchise spanning seven installments that saw the Irish jokester taking a trip to Vegas, being shipped off to space and ridin’ dirty in tha hood on two separate occasions.

Needless to say, the Leprechaun has left a pretty large body count in his wake over the years, and in celebration of the reboot we wanted to shine the green spotlight on some of his most memorable slayings. So today we bring you the seven best kills from the original six Leprechaun films, which are the some of the wildest and most off...

Warwick Davis in El duende maldito (1992)
Shlocky charms: The crazy rise and 'terrifying' return of 'Leprechaun'
Warwick Davis in El duende maldito (1992)
How did a low budget horror movie about a diminutive Irish monster spawn five sequels, a new reboot, and the career of Jennifer Aniston? EW tracks the deranged history of the Leprechaun franchise.

British actor Warwick Davis says he has “specific” fans—well-wishers who want to discuss just one of the several fantasy franchises in which he has appeared. “People talk about Star Wars, people talk about Harry Potter,” he explains, “and people talk about Leprechaun.”

Alert readers will have noticed that one of these franchises is not like the others. While Star Wars and Harry Potter have raked in billions of dollars,...

'Leprechaun: Origins' to get theatrical release
Warwick Davis in El duende maldito (1992)
The endearingly nuts Leprechaun franchise has been a straight-to-video enterprise since 1994’s Leprechaun 2 failed to repeat the box-office success of the previous year’s Jennifer Aniston-starring Leprechaun. But two decades on, the little monster from Ireland is once again going to grace the big screen.

Lionsgate and WWE Studios announced today that franchise reboot Leprechaun: Origins, which stars wrestler Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl as the titular Emerald Isle gremlin, will have a limited theatrical run on Aug. 22. Following that, the film will be available to watch on VOD from Aug. 26 and then released on Blu-ray and DVD Sept. 30. The...

SXSW: Comedian Doug Benson and friends take on 'Big Trouble In Little China'

Mad Max's Weekend Movie Guide: 'Burt Wonderstone' & More
"One of the things that Teller and I are obsessed with, one of the reasons that we're in magic, is the difference between fantasy and reality." — Penn Jillette

Greetings from the apocalypse! We managed to hold off the Antichrist by electing a pope from South America who looks just like Jonathan Pryce. That's pretty good work. I say Rome, the Americas and all the rest of us deserve an honest weekend off, and what more auspicious time to do that than a Catholic drinking holiday?

Friday, March 15

We're gonna kick things off at the appropriate time to christen any weekend: 4:20 p.m., since that's when "Curly Sue" is on Encore. I know what you're thinking, "Man, that's, like, John Hughes' worst movie," and you're not wrong, but this ersatz comedy about a father-daughter con artist team who sleaze their way into some rich folks' hearts has a little...

Opinion: 'Leprechaun' Is the Best Horror Series Ever Made
NextMovie kicks off Leprechaun Week today! Look for new "Leprechaun"-related content every day this week in the lead-up to St. Paddy's Day. Because it's what Leprechaun would have wanted ...

"I have not come to play with fruit. I just want me magic flute!"

So sayeth the ever-rhyming Irish demon played by Warwick Davis in "Leprechaun in the Hood" (2000) to the lusty cross-dressing Miss Fontaine (Lobo Sebastian). A little later, these two engage in a passionate romp under the sheets during which Miss Fontaine's cries of pain will be mistaken for gasps of orgasmic delight by at least one bewildered passer-by as the Leprechaun claims another victim.

It's astonishingly tasteless, crass and almost (almost) admirably brazen ... which kind of sums up the "Leprechaun" series in its entirety. And that's a pretty impressive entirety — there are six of the damn things in that pot of cinematic gold, after all.

The Leprechaun...

Your Halloween Seasonal TV Preview (abridged) with Schedules
How seriously do you think I take Halloween? Well, I’m fairly frickin’ anal retentive anyway, so I need to book my viewing in advance. I mean I’ll deviate from my itinerary, but I at least need a plan. I can’t be the only one out there with a stick up his ass. So this October/Halloween Season I figured we needed a little guidance. There’s too many damn channels on the cable box, no horror hosts and shit for advertising. So let me be your TV Guide… Keeper.

We won’t touch on everything and I’m sure new programming will come up as October gets itself moving. I’ll throw an update out there from time to time if a special is airing or a new programming line up is discovered, uncovered, revealed or undead. Yes, this is for cable or dish. Network TV will...
