Peter Outerbridge and Molly Parker in Kissed (1996)
Romance is dead - at least for Sandra Larson - in an edgy love story of secret yearning and forbidden passion. From the time she was a child, Sandra was fascinated by the dead. A fascination that remains unfulfilled, until she is propelled by fate into the world of the mildly sinister Mr. Wallis, proprietor of the local funeral home. Now, at the side of her mentor, Sandra's innermost desires will finally find their tortured expression. But her new-found serenity is shattered when a handsome young medical student learns her secret, and finds himself drawn into her tangled web of ever-darkening desire and erotic obsession.

    Seductive, enthralling, surprising

I remember seeing this movie whenit was released in the theatres in Canada. We went to see the movie knowing nothing about it. I was a surprise as to the subject and I remember many people were shocked and repelled just by the subject. I was actually thrilled by the way the subject was approached. It wasn't vulgar, obscene or bawdy; on the contrary it was sensitive, almost romantic. One emphasizes with the main character, a girl who is attracted by dead persons. I felt seduced, almost hypnotised by many scenes.

All in all a very special and an excellent movie, but one which may not be seen superficially.

Yet another fantastic and original Canadian movie!

Maybe I'm just being lucky, but over the last couple of years I've watched a whole bunch of fantastic Canadian movies by directors such as Atom Egoyan, Bruce McDonald and Don McKellar. These guys are making movies that are wiping the floor with most of their American contemporaries! After watching 'Kissed' add Lynne Stopkewich to that list.

She has managed to make an intelligent and touching movie about one of the last sexual taboos - necrophilia. I can't think of any other movie off the top of my head that has dealt with this subject that isn't either horror or exploitation. Now I love good horror and exploitation movies, don't get me wrong, it's just amazingly refreshing to see this kind of thing handled in a completely different and thoughtful way.

The writing, direction, cinematography are all perfect, and the acting is first class throughout. Especially Molly Parker in the lead role. Parker was funny and sweet in the cult TV show 'Twitch City' with Don McKellar, but reveals even more depth and talent with this outstanding and unforgettable performance. 'Kissed' is a totally unique and special movie. Once seen, never forgotten. I look forward to more movies from Stopkewich. If 'Kissed' is any indication of her braveness and originality, she could well turn into one of THE great film makers of this decade.

Beautiful film about death and necrophilia.

Movies about necrophilia are incredibly rare, mainly because this subject matter is too offensive for many filmmakers. So kudos should go to Lynne Stopkevich for creating this brave film(I'm dying to see her new feature "Suspicious River")."Kissed" isn't just another exploitation film-the depiction of necrophilia in it is really subtle. It's still more disturbing than many gross-out shockers, because it's so well-made.The acting is excellent and the direction is well-handled.So if you like this movie check out such necro-horrors like "Aftermath"(1993),"Buio Omega"(1979)and "Neromantik" series(1987,1992).The music(especially closing song)is amazing too!

Beautiful, Morbid and Tasteful, if there were only more like it

I loved this movie. I get so damn sick of the horror films that portray the funeral service and industry as gruesome, gory and horrifying. I am in the funeral service as well as mortuary school. First of all, I don't believe this movie is about necrophilia beneath the surface. It is about this woman's relationship with death. Gore, blood, guts and other stuff come from fear. There is no respect in that in my opinion. That is for people who are afraid of their own mortality. We are all going to die. It is beautiful that the director and writer were able to explore their relationship with death. Death is intriguing and dark because it is unknown. I think this movie really looked at the main character's relationship with death, herself and her own mortality through her love for the dead. Only, it was presented in a literal fashion. It seemed as though the plot was a great manifestation of the theme, which may be our understanding of life, death and rebirth. Yes, sex is life and death is rebirth. And yes, I find the idea of having sex with the dead literally repulsive, working with the dead on a daily basis. I don't believe that was the message of the movie. One thing I learned in the funeral service is that it is life that we deal with day to day, not death. It is helping the living deal with loss. That is love. If only there were more cerebral, psychological and spiritual movies that touch this topic but unfortunately we are left with gore!! Anyone know of any other movies like this?

I think it has a really good Feel

A reviewer complained about this movie not showing enough. Movies are not like television episodes. A movie is a finished product. Each movie vehical has to express not only specific acts and dialogue of the cast but has to also expell an artistic quality. A movie unlike television shows must be reviewed wholistically. Either a movie is a good total package or it is not. This is why most movie sequels do not work. It is usually impossible to recreate the unique once in a lifetime artistic expression of a film. I would suggest movie reviewers keep this in mind. Of course one should never watch movies with commercials. This totally breaks up the continuity and artistic expression of any film and reduces them to the level of a television episode. This film gave me a very mello, soft feeling, I could feel the main character's growing love and attraction as she discovered her innermost desires. I believe that the movie wanted the viewer to feel the passion in her mind not the actual phyical interaction with the bodies.

    • Trivia
Molly Parker almost quit acting just before getting this role. She had just come off of a guest spot on the Highlander series (1992) and felt unfulfilled, not only by that part, but by acting as a profession. She longed to play a full character. So when cinematographer Gregory Middleton, who had worked with Parker before on a short film, reached out to her about taking the lead role on Kissed, Parker took the leap. She didn't care that it was a very controversial film and role that could possibly ruin her career, because to her mind, she didn't have a career to ruin.

      [first lines]

Sandra Larson: When you die, your life... flashes, and you disintegrate, radiating energy. When a thing turns into its opposite, when love becomes hate, there are always sparks. But when life turns into death, it's explosive. There are streaks of light, magical, and electrifying. Everyone senses something, some energy, some spirit, some sort of illumination, But I see it. I've seen bodies shining like stars. Some say there's no soul, no afterlife, that life and death is the straightest line on the compass, and nothing more. I say believe what you want, because no matter what you do, cut everything up, burn it all down, you're in the path of something beyond your control.
