Any film festival worth its salt will program a movie or two that’s more rooted in delirium than common sense. If you had to choose the wildest, loopiest big swing of a movie to play at the Venice Film Festival this year, it would likely come down to two choices: “The Testament of Ann Lee,” Mona Fastvold’s 18th-century cult Shaker musical (imagine “The Crucible” set in a “Handmaid’s Tale” world where the women are their own puritan oppressors), and “In the Hand of Dante,” Julian Schnabel’s impossible-to-pigeonhole literary gangster mystery, which might be described as “The Da Vinci Code” retold as a violent underworld fairy tale with 14th-century footnotes. But “The Testament of Ann Lee” is a forbiddingly austere slow-motion ramble. “In the Hand of Dante,” by contrast, is a folly that pulsates with life. Even when it doesn’t add up, it’s the kind...

Angelina Jolie just caught a performance of one of Broadway‘s hottest shows of the year!
The Oscar-winning actresses attended a performance of John Proctor Is The Villain this past weekend during the show’s final weeks on Broadway.
The play follows a “group of high school girls in rural Georgia who are studying Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and create a feminism club as they try to make sense of the greater #MeToo movement and their own relationships with the men — classmates, teachers and fathers — in their small community.”
John Proctor Is The Villain is directed by Danya Taymor, who directed the musical The Outsiders. Angelina was a producer on that show.

Daniel Day-Lewis blamed his slow rhythm and style of working for delivering fewer films in his career, which is also why he probably has not done TV shows. The three-time Oscar winner announced his retirement from acting multiple times and was last seen in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread eight years ago.
When asked about his slow output and his work style, Day-Lewis said that he learned pretty early on that his energy would be depleted if he took on more than he could chew, so he became choosy with his projects. He also said that he could not work on someone else’s timeline (via BBC).
A lot of other people just think I’m a lazy bum [he laughs]. You’re sweet to say that. I think the reason I don’t work more often – I have a slow rhythm, a slothful rhythm even. You can’t work to somebody else’s rhythm.

Zach Cregger’s “Weapons” is, as of this writing, one of the most acclaimed motion pictures of 2025. It’s got a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, out of 214 reviews and counting. Which means only a handful of critics have seen Cregger’s film and didn’t give it their stamp of approval.
I am one of the handful.
That doesn’t make me special. That doesn’t make me right or wrong. It just means that I didn’t care for the film, no matter how much I may admire its various pieces. As a professional critic it is my responsibility to be honest about my opinion — whatever it is, whether anyone agrees or not — and explain how I got there. Without an explanation it’s not criticism, it’s just an opinion. Everyone’s entitled to an opinion, of course, but I’m not allowed to stop there. Getting into the nitty-gritty is my trade.

It's always interesting to get new perspectives of all the different lives that both world wars impacted. In the new drama movie The Choral, set during World War I, the Choral Society in Ramsden, Yorkshire, is dealing with a unique situation: most of their singers were recruited to join the army, and they need to find a way to find new talent. The movie stars Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), who is in another war drama after starring in titles like Schindler's List and The English Patient. The movie premieres in theaters this Christmas.
The trailer for The Choral suggests that the movie will be an enjoyable one despite the scenario in which it all takes place. It makes sense, however, that people would look for a bit of art and emotion in the middle of a huge influx of bad news. In the story, Dr. Henry Guthrie (Fiennes) is recruited to...

Liam Neeson, best known for his dramatic and action roles, is currently earning rave reviews for his turn as the bumbling L.A. detective Frank Drebin Jr. in The Naked Gun. While the film may not be an Oscar contender, it boasts a strong A– CinemaScore and holds a solid 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Beyond his comedic chops, Neeson, star of Schindler’s List, Kinsey, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and Taken, is no stranger to awards and critical acclaim. Here’s a look back at his awards history.
The Irish-born actor earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Oskar Schindler in Schindler’s List (1993). Although Tom Hanks took home the statue that year for Philadelphia, Neeson’s performance was widely praised. The film itself received 12 Academy Award nominations and won seven, including Best Picture and Best Director for Steven Spielberg.

Amid her rise to fame in the 1980s, Winona Ryder took on one of her most memorable roles when she joined the cast of Heathers. It came with a price, however, as it meant missing out on a chance to co-star in another big movie with Marlon Brando.
Per Elle UK, Ryder reflected on the early years of her career in a new interview. She brought up 1988's Heathers, in which she starred in the lead role as Veronica Sawyer. At the time of the movie's release, she had already been cast to appear in the 1990 film The Freshman alongside Brando. However, she was fired from the project before filming after the filmmakers watched Heathers, offended by its content.
"I was told I was never gonna work again if I did Heathers," Ryder said. "I did lose a job [because of Heathers]. They thought it was making fun of teen suicide. They were deeply offended and,...

The Dorian Theater Awards, decided on by Galeca's theater wing, honor the best of Broadway and Off-Broadway, mainstream to LGBTQ+, for the 2024-2025 season. Kimberly Bellflower's new play John Proctor is the Villain earned three Dorian Theater Awards, more than any other Broadway production. The drama, in which contemporary high schoolers recontextualize Arthur Miller's The Crucible, was awarded prizes for Outstanding Broadway Play, Outstanding Featured Performance in a Broadway Play for Fina Strazza, and Outstanding Broadway Ensemble. In other Broadway categories, Jonathan Spector's Eureka Day picked up the...

While Sadie Sink rose to fame in Netflix’s Stranger Things, her roots are in the theater.
The 23-year-old actress appeared in a revival of Annie in 2013 and starred as young Queen Elizabeth in The Audience in 2015 before going on to play Max in Stranger Things, and taking on roles in films including The Whale. And now, Sink has returned to Broadway in John Proctor is the Villain, where she has received her first Tony nomination for her role as high schooler Shelby Holcomb.
Sink was nervous about returning to Broadway, especially with the fandom and expectations of Stranger Things surrounding her. But she was drawn back by Kimberly Bellflower’s play, in which a group of high school girls dissect The Crucible for English class, while also seeing parallels with their own lives. While the play is an ensemble piece, Sink’s character comes in like a wrecking ball...

There are so many startling, perspective-shifting scenes in Kimberly Belflower’s Tony Award-nominated play John Proctor Is The Villain that two people discussing the plot can easily make incorrect assumptions about exactly which shocking scene they’re addressing. Read on for a perfect example in this conversation with star Sadie Sink.
For her unsettling and remarkably affecting performance in John Proctor, Sink, who shot to fame in 2016 when she joined the second season of Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things as Maxine “Max” Mayfield, has been Tony-nominated for Best Leading Actress In A Play.
To say Sink is on a career roll is an understatement. In addition to starring in one of the Broadway season’s most acclaimed productions, she’ll be back in Hawkins, Indiana, when Stranger Things returns for its fifth and final season later this year. And she recently joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe with her casting...

“I hadn’t read it since college,” says playwright Kimberly Belflower of Arthur Miller’s iconic play The Crucible. She drew inspiration for John Proctor Is the Villain from that 1953 drama and found herself compelled to reread the work — an allegory of the McCarthy era in American politics told through the lens of the Salem Witch Trials — in 2017 at the height of the #MeToo movement. A comment by Woody Allen comparing the movement to a “witch hunt” sparked the idea to revisit Miller’s play because she says her “brain just thinks in fiction.” Belflower recently sat down with Gold Derby and other journalists at the 2025 Tony Awards Meet the Nominees press event.
Set in 2018 in a small town in Georgia, John Proctor Is the Villain centers on a group of high school juniors reading The Crucible in English class when accusations of sexual misconduct begin rippling through their community...

“When I first read The Crucible, I think it was in high school, and I was just trying to make it through the year, honestly” shares Sadie Sink with a laugh. The actress stars in the new Broadway play John Proctor Is the Villain, which draws inspiration from the famous Arthur Miller play from 1953. In Kimberly Belflower’s drama, Sink stars as Shelby, a high school junior who takes a leave of absence from school and returns in time for her class discussion of The Crucible, which coincides with the #MeToo movement rippling through her small community in Georgia. Sink recently sat down with Gold Derby to discuss the complexity of her character and her reaction to Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
Although only 23 years old, Sink is a Broadway veteran, appearing in the 2012 revival of Annie and later starring opposite Helen Mirren in her Tony-winning role in The Audience.

Priscilla Pointer, the co-founder of the San Francisco Actor’s Workshop and a theater, TV and film actress who often played memorable mothers — especially to her daughter Amy Irving — died Monday in her sleep at age 100, according to family.
Pointer’s most prominent work over her eight-decade career includes roles in Carrie, Blue Velvet, The Onion Field, The Falcon and the Snowman, Looking for Mr. Goodbar and Dallas.
In 1947, she met and married director Jules Irving. The duo, along with Herbert Blau, were among the founders of the San Francisco Actor’s Workshop, which played a seminal part in the modern theater movement in America. A local independent professional theater troupe, the Actor’s Workshop became the first theater group outside of New York City to sign an “Off Broadway” Equity agreement. Seventy-two years after its debut and Tony Award win for Best Play, Arthur Miller’s The Crucible has received new life on Broadway. No, not in the form of a revival — the last one in 2016 starred Saiorse Ronan and Ben Whishaw — but rather through Kimberly Belflower's play John Proctor Is the Villain. The drama interpolates Miller's classic work into its plot, which revolves around a 2018 English classroom in Georgia, where the 1953 play becomes the topic of intense discussion of the newly established feminism club.

Sadie Sink is officially back on Broadway and her Stranger Things co-stars are there to cheer her on!
The 22-year-old actress celebrated the opening night of her new play John Proctor Is The Villain on Monday (April 14) at the Booth Theatre in New York City.
Sadie walked the red carpet following the performance.
Stranger Things actors Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, and Maya Hawke were all in attendance at the opening night event!
In John Proctor is the Villain, five young women – fueled by pop music, optimism, and fury – clash with their school, their Georgia town, and the stories they’ve been instructed to believe. As their class dissects The Crucible, they begin to question who we deem heroic, who we call a villain, and who gets burned in the process.
The play opened to rave reviews! It’s a New York Times critic’s pick and Entertainment Weekly gave it an “A” grade.

It’s a testament to the subtle brilliance of Kimberly Belflower’s writing and Danya Tamor’s direction that you can hardly feel the 105-minute, no-intermission runtime of John Proctor Is the Villain.
The play, now on Broadway, follows a group of junior girls at Helen County High, a small school in northeast Georgia, who start a feminist club at the height of the #MeToo movement. At first, their plans are almost thwarted by anonymously concerned community members who worry the group will alienate boys. The girls insist that their male peers can, and in fact should, become members. “If we were able to foster a meaningful dialogue with them, we could find common ground,” intones Beth (an impressive Fina Strazza), the high-strung but well-meaning one of the crew. “That’s like, the whole purpose of this club, that’s why it’s so important.”
