Looking over Jean Smart’s oeuvre since her television debut in the 1979 TV movie “Before and After,” one thing is instantly noticeable — she has not stopped working. But over the last decade or so, momentum has picked up even more rapidly. It’s almost like producers and directors are shouting from the rooftops, “Get me Jean Smart!”

Forty-seven tracks into Rush 50 — a new career-spanning anthology presenting 50 songs across nearly five hours — a cool sonic Easter egg arrives. Near the beginning of “Headlong Flight,” a track from Rush’s final studio album, 2012’s Clockwork Angels, Alex Lifeson plays a slashing solo-guitar break, which Geddy Lee and Neil Peart answer with quick unison bass-and-drum punches. The moment is a deliberate, near-exact replica of a passage from “Bastille Day,” originally released 37 years prior and included as track 10 on the comp. It’s both a fun throwback, and — heard here in...

Since 2005, Grey's Anatomy has produced a hoard of amazing characters. From incredible surgeons like Richard Webber to swoon-worthy doctors like Derek Shepherd, all of these characters work to make this show a success. So, even with a variety of intense medical cases, many long-term fans would agree that the show is a hit because of its diverse range of characters.
But with so many faces to choose from, it's evident that not everyone is going to be a fan favorite. Some characters are just too obnoxious for their own good, and occasionally, a certain character will just take things too far. As such, for every good Grey's Anatomy character, there seems to be plenty that are just plain annoying.

A new career-spanning Rush anthology titled Rush 50 will include previously unreleased tracks and fan-requested material.
The collection is out March 21st and will arrive on vinyl as a 7-lp box set and on CD in a four-disc box set. It marks the first-ever career-spanning anthology from Rush.
“50? Is that all?…seriously…it’s a cool collection…but look at all those songs,” remarked Geddy Lee in a press release. “I’m exhausted just reading the effin list!”
Billed as a chronological trip through the prog-rock legends’ career — from their first single in 1973 through their final gig in 2015 — the tracklist is exhaustive, comprising live and studio recordings.
The rare material — some “fan requested,” per the press release — is frontloaded on Disc 1, including versions of early tunes “Not Fade Away,” “You Can’t Fight It,” and “Working Man” that are receiving their first-ever physical release on vinyl/CD. A handful of live...

Star Trek: Voyager's Kes could make a comeback, even if Jennifer Lien doesn't return to reprise the role. As an Ocampa with a projected lifespan of only nine years, Kes' days were necessarily numbered. Kes was two years old when she and Neelix (Ethan Phillips) joined the USS Voyager crew in 2371, so even if Kes had made it through Voyager's seven-year journey, she'd be near the end of her life for Voyager's 2378 arrival in the Alpha Quadrant. New Star Trek shows post-Voyager take place in the 2380s or later, so Kes shouldn't be alive ... right?
In Star Trek: Voyager season 2, episode 10, "Cold Fire", Kes meets Ocampa colonists who have harnessed their natural telepathic gifts, which allows them to extend their lives to 14 years or longer. After Kes begins training with Lieutenant Tuvok (Tim Russ), Kes' Ocampa powers grow at a surprising rate. Star Trek: Voyager season 3, episode 21, "Before and After...

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5, Episode 3, "The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel"Star Trek: Voyager's acclaimed season 4 two-parter, "Year of Hell", can be added to the long list of Star Trek properties lovingly mocked by Star Trek: Lower Decks. It's not the first time that Star Trek: Voyager has stood in Lower Decks' line of fire. The animated comedy's 4th season opener, "Twovix", was chock-full of references to some of the weirdest things that happened in Star Trek: Voyager. Lieutenant Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) guest starred in the Lower Decks episode bearing his name, season 2's "We'll Always Have Tom Paris".
In Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5, episode 3, "The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel", the USS Cerritos is tasked with exterminating a "glumpus" of nanites from the Cosmic Duchess, a luxury interstellar cruise ship. James Cameron's 1991 action spectacular "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" felt, at the time, like the biggest movie imaginable. Cameron upgraded his low-budget 1984 original into one of the slickest, most visually innovative action movies made to date, featuring a robotic villain that could transform into a living blob of shape-shifting mercury-like metal. The villainous robot, the T-1000 (Robert Patrick), travels back in time from the future to kill the adolescent John Connor (Edward Furlong), destined to lead a resistance force against an army of machines. Yes, the future in Cameron's movies is bleak; robots will soon achieve consciousness and, almost instantly, detonate a nuclear bomb.
Luckily, John has his mentally unbalanced mother Sarah (Linda Hamilton) to look after him, as well as a "good" time-traveling Terminator robot (Arnold Schwarzenegger) reprogrammed to protect him. By the end of the film, it seems that the characters were able to close off several causality...

Star Trek: Voyager almost ended season 3 with "Year of Hell," delaying Seven of Nine's debut. The creative team also considered a doppelgnger storyline for the season 3 finale, which later became the episodes "Demon" and "Course: Oblivion." Seven of Nine's introduction in "Scorpion" was crucial, so delaying "Year of Hell" and the doppelgngers made more sense.
The original plan for Star Trek: Voyager's season 3 ending would have delayed Seven of Nine's (Jeri Ryan) introduction. Voyager's season 3 finale/season 4 premiere, "Scorpion, Parts 1 and 2," was a huge episode for the show. Although they had been introduced earlier in season 3, "Scorpion" officially cemented the Borg as the main villain for Voyager's cast of characters, and kicked off a Borg storyline that would continue for the next four seasons. The Borg became extremely important on Voyager starting in "Scorpion" thanks to the debut of one of the show's more beloved characters: Seven of Nine.

Each main character on Star Trek: Voyager had standout episodes that showcased their individual strengths and storylines. Episodes like "Before and After" (Kes), "Mortal Coil" (Neelix), "Latent Image" (The Doctor), and "One" (Seven of Nine) brought depth and development to these characters. Captain Janeway's standout episode was "Year of Hell," which demonstrated her heroism, loyalty, vulnerability, and complexity.
Each main character on Star Trek: Voyager got a chance to shine during the show's run, and all of them have an episode that stands out as their best. Voyager was the fourth series in the Star Trek timeline and featured a cast of diverse characters, including Star Trek's first female Captain, Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). During Voyager's run, Janeway led her crew on a journey through the Delta Quadrant after the USS Voyager became stranded on the other side of the galaxy in the show's pilot episode, "Caretaker, Parts I&ii.

Neil Young has released a new album called Before and After, out now via Reprise. But instead of writing and recording a batch of new material, the singer-songwriter took a cue from the Taylor Swift playbook, re-recording select songs from throughout his career.
Before and After is described as “a trip into his music history,” with Young having picked some of his own favorite songs from his catalog to re-visit. It’ll mostly be solo acoustic re-recordings, sequenced so its 13 songs blend seamlessly together from front to back.
“The feeling is captured, not in pieces, but as a whole piece — designed to be listened to that way,” Young said in a statement. “This music presentation defies shuffling, digital organization, separation. Only for listening. That says it all.”
Young also co-produced and co-mixed the record, which includes his 1966 debut with Buffalo Springfield “Burned” all the way up to his 2021 tune “Don’t Forget Love.

As prolific as Neil Young continues to be, much of the veteran singer-songwriter’s contemporary output has consisted of repackaged old material in the form of live albums and studio outtakes. His latest, Before and After, continues in this vein, as every track has appeared, in one form or another, on a previous release.
None of that is to say that Before and After is inessential. Young is a conceptual thinker, a fact that his strict adherence to live recording and spartan production techniques has often disguised. On Before and After, however, the concept is front and center, and the intimacy of the recordings emphasizes what Young was trying to achieve rather than obscures it. Barring some keys provided by Bob Rice, these recordings feature Young singing and playing alone in a room, including some awkward fumbling around on a pump organ.
Opener “I’m the Ocean” in particular is served well by this approach.

Star Trek: Voyager's Doctor, despite trying out multiple names, ultimately stuck with just "Doctor." His journey to find a name was a subplot in the show's early seasons, but later became less important. Some of the names the Doctor considered were Schweitzer, Shmullus, Van Gogh, Mozart, Kenneth, and Joe. Each name was associated with significant events or people in his life. While the Doctor was often referred to as "Doc" or "Voyager's Doctor," he never chose a specific name for himself. The lack of a name became less significant as the show progressed, and it no longer seemed to be a priority for the character.
Star Trek: Voyager's Doctor (Robert Picardo) tried out a variety of names during the show's run, but it was the right choice for him to stick with just "Doctor." As a sentient hologram, the Doctor fulfilled the role that many other Star Trek characters had before him,...

John Deyle, who appeared in four Broadway musicals, in more than 100 commercials and as the inept Mr. Science on the first season of Late Night With Conan O’Brien, has died. He was 68.
Deyle died June 22 at his home in Mount Kisco, New York, after a battle with esophageal cancer, his wife, Rebecca Paller, announced.
While auditioning for a role in the musical adaptation of I Remember Mama in 1978, lyricist Martin Charnin told him that he was “all wrong for this show, but we could use you in Annie,” he recalled.
Deyle then made his Broadway debut in March 1979, joining the ensemble of the Sarah Jessica Parker starrer by playing Louis Howe, Fred McCracken and Bert Healy.
He went on to work in the 1980 Broadway revival of Lerner & Loewe’s Camelot, starring Richard Burton, and in the subsequent U.S. and Australian tours of the famed musical that featured Richard Harris in the lead.

This article marks Part 11 of the 21-part Gold Derby series Meryl Streep at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at Meryl Streep’s nominations, the performances that competed with her at the Academy Awards, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.
The latter half of the 1990s found Meryl Streep struggling to find a proper follow-up to her sublime, Oscar-nominated turn in “The Bridges of Madison County” (1995).
First, there was “Before and After” (1996), a sleepy collaboration with filmmaker Barbet Schroeder and leading man Liam Neeson. The picture, among Streep’s worst box office performers to date, was out of theaters within a month.
A bit more successful was “Marvin’s Room” (1996), a family drama that at last paired Streep with Diane Keaton, plus Hume Cronyn, Gwen Verdon and Leonardo DiCaprio. The film garnered modest reviews and box office receipts upon opening that December and it was ultimately Keaton,...

Making a film is already an immense undertaking, but for short film creators, finding distribution and a platform to reach audiences is a particular challenge. For the artists, talent and distributors on TheWrap’s Shorts Panel at the Landmark Theatres in Los Angeles Wednesday night, meeting that challenge was about finding the right people to enact their vision. “It’s about disrupting a model,” said Amy Emmerich, Chief Content Officer of Refinery29, which distributed two of the presented short films, “Lucia, Before and After” and Kristen Stewart’s “Come Swim.” “Sometimes a story can be told in many different lengths,...

Om Shanti Om, as soon as you read the title, I bet like me, the music and the film immediately begins to play in your head. Directed by Farah Khan, the film starred Shah Rukh Khan, Arjun Rampal, Shreyas Talpade, Kirron Kher and introduced Deepika Padukone. If you can believe it, it has been 10 years since the magic of Oso hit the big screen.
It is as Farah says, a movie, within a movie within a movie. Set in the 70s and present day, Om Shanti Om has films, stars, sets, drama, dance, action, romance, revenge, reincarnation and finally Happys Endings. It is a movie that has it all and more!
To set the stage check out the trailer that gives you a glimpse into the world of Om and Shantipriya.
I was very lucky to be able to have an in-depth conversation with director Farah Khan about Om Shanti Om.

Of the 86 feature films (34%) by women directors that screened in Toronto, I saw three in particular which have kept me thinking about how the feminine, or even how woman herself is defined. Speaking generally of “those men” in the power positions throughout the world, I am becoming increasingly convinced that “those men” set an example in their over zealous coveting wealth and resources, and included in their materialistic extremes, is a push to redefine women “as they were” in the days, not so long ago, when they did not have much to say about their status.
The women depicted in the movies in Toronto take daring leaps to change the circumstances of their lives. Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, Audience Winner Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, the first runner up for the Audience Award about the Olympic ice skater I, Tonya, Battle of the Sexes about Billie Jean King...
