‘Women Wearing Shoulder Pads’ Channels the Spirit of Pedro Almodóvar Into a Stop-Motion Package
Image
Every episode of “Women Wearing Shoulder Pads” averages out to around 11 minutes, but the show packs a lot in with what little time it has. In its first two episodes, which premiered August 17, the Adult Swim series includes murder plots; steamy lesbian sex scenes; a little girl riding around the streets of Quito, Ecuador on a giant guinea pig; and some of the soapiest melodrama seen on American TV since the heights of “Melrose Place.” With such creativity on display, the stop-motion series’ status as the channel’s first Spanish-language series is only half of what makes it distinctive.

Set in a fantasy version of ’80s Ecuador, the series tells a complex tale of romantic love and corporate intrigue via the medium of stop-motion, focusing on the women surrounding Marioneta Negocios (Pepa Pallarés), a businesswoman attempting to promote cuys as pets rather than food, a campaign that puts her in...

William Shatner Breaks Silence on Netflix Reboot of His Greatest Non-Star Trek Franchise
Image
Netflix is rebooting a 43-year-old cop show that is considered to be one of William Shatner’s best non-Star Trekshows. Following news of the revival movie, the legendary actor is revealing his thoughts on the matter.

On Aug. 6, Netflix announced, via Deadline, that it has gained the rights for a new action-comedy movie based on the 1980s police procedural T.J. Hooker, which starred Shatner as well as Heather Locklear. Entertainment Weekly reached out to Shatner regarding his thoughts on the reboot, and a representative for the actor shared his answer via e-mail.

“I know nothing. It would be a lovely idea to resurrect the legendary character, but I have no idea what’s going on,” Shatner said in his response.

The original T.J. Hooker premiered on ABC in 1982 and ran for a total of five seasons and 90 episodes. Shatner, who is best known for playing James. T. Kirk, in the Star Trek franchise,...

Netflix Is Rebooting William Shatner's Greatest Non-Star Trek Franchise 43 Years Later
Image
Netflix has announced its next project, and it’s a take on a 1980s TV series that starred none other than William Shatner. While he may be most well-known for playing Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trekfrom 1966 to 1969 and in its subsequent feature films, it’s his cop show that’s being rebooted on the streamer.

According to Deadline, Netflix has gained the rights for a new action comedy movie based on the 1980s police procedural T.J. Hooker, which starred Shatner and Heather Locklear. T.J. Hooker ran from 1982 to 1986 and is regarded as one of Shatner’s greatest shows, aside from Star Trek, of course.

News of the new T.J. Hooker movie comes on the heels of the success of the recently-rebooted The Naked Gun franchise, which, as of Aug. 6, has earned more than $30 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo.

Jarrad Paul and Andy Mogel are on board to write the T.

Netflix Is Rebooting William Shatner's 'T.J. Hooker' as an Action Comedy
Image
It's often said that comedy equals tragedy plus time. When it comes to developing new versions of long-since-canceled television series, however, it's just as often true that comedy equals drama plus time, and a recently announced revival of an '80s cop series is just the latest proof.

T.J. Hooker, the William Shatner-led police drama that ran from 1982 to 1986 and gave its lead actor something to do between Star Treksequels, has caught the eye of execs at Netflix, where plans are afoot to leverage the show's basic concept into a new action comedy film. Although the original series took itself fairly seriously, it isn't hard to understand why Netflix sees the potential for laughs — not least because the premise, which revolved around the grumpy, by-the-books Hooker frequently clashing with less old-fashioned co-workers, has been used so many times that it was almost past the point of parody by the time T.

‘Wkrp In Cincinnati’ Star Loni Anderson, Who Was Burt Reynolds Ex-Wife, Dies At 79
Image
Loni Anderson died on August 3, a few days before her 80th birthday on August 5.

There are many, many ways that pop-culture fans have discovered shapeshifting rocker/actor Michael Des Barres over the decades. Some may know him from his big-screen debut at age 17 in the 1967 Sidney Poitier film To Sir, With Love; or as the frontman of the Deep Purple- and Led Zeppelin-associated bands Silverhead and Detective; or as the cowriter of Animotion’s 1983 hit “Obsession”; or as the longtime host of the Little Steven’s Underground Garage morning show on SiriusXM; or as iconic MacGyver villain Murdoc; or for his many other television appearances on shows like Roseanne, Seinfeld, Melrose Place, Northern Exposure, Frasier, and Nip/Tuck.

But if you’re one of the Gen X kids among the estimated 1.9 billion people (nearly 40 percent of the world population at the time) who watched the global Live Aid concert broadcast 40 years ago, on July 13, 1985, then you might best know Des Barres as the...

A Seinfeld Guest Star Played A Part In Naming Curb Your Enthusiasm
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Enthusiasts of Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David's hit sitcom "Seinfeld" would be able to tell you that the title character (Seinfeld) had many, many girlfriends over the course of the show's 180 episodes. Indeed, Jerry usually only dated his partners for plot purposes, allowing them to stick around for a single episode. The following week, Jerry would be dating someone new. A metric on the show's DVDs pointed out that Jerry dated a grand total of 72 women over the course of the series' nine years. That means he dated each woman for an average of 45-and-a-half days. Only five of the 72 women dated Jerry for more than one episode.

It's easy to see why Jerry never dated anyone for an extended period. Jerry and the other three leads of "Seinfeld" were meant to be shallow, petty, childish, and awful. They were neurotic and self-serving characters,...

Why Jack Wagner Didn’t Want To Star On Melrose Place After General Hospital
Image
Jack Wagner joined General Hospital as Frisco Jones. When he left, he thought his soap opera past was behind him. He had no interest in joining Melrose Place. At first, he nearly skipped the audition.

Soap Opera Strike

Wagner reflected on his acting career during his interview on the Still The Place podcast. He spoke to hosts Courtney Thorne-Smith, Daphne Zuniga, and Laura Leighton about his audition for Melrose Place. Wagner almost didn’t star on the sexy primetime drama. He didn’t want to do another soap like Gh.

It wasn’t the genre that he was against. Wagner feared that he would get typecast. When his agent suggested the role as Dr. Peter Burns, he tossed the thought aside. Wagner was asked to audition for the show. His initial reaction was, “No chance. I’m not doing it. It feels like a soap.”

Then, there was one thing that changed his mind.

It’s been three decades since Melrose Place debuted on Fox — and Mondays haven’t mellowed one bit. They’re still a bitch.

It’s when you got together to watch a television show with your friends so you could remember watching a show where you were in your life and who you were with,” Leighton says. “And that’s a unique thing we don’t get any more with television.”

Their journeys often include candid conversations with former castmates, including Thomas Calabro, Andrew Shue, Grant Show, Vanessa Estelle Williams, Doug Savant,...

The CW’s ‘Melrose Place’ Revival Failed 15 Years Ago — What Went Wrong?
Image
The original Melrose Place debuted to 16 million viewers and became a primetime-soap favorite with its outlandish plot twists. The Fox series’s 2009 CW revival, however, scored just 2.3 million viewers with its premiere and eventually dropped to 860k viewers. Sunday (April 13) marks the 15th anniversary of the newer Melrose Place’s first season finale and series finale, not that many viewers will even remember. So what went wrong? Let’s take a look at why the second generation of this TV soap failed to make a splash. The series had too few originals. For starters, precious few people who hung around the original Melrose Place apartment complex returned for the revival. Melrose Place creator Darren Star did not participate in the update, leaving screenwriters Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer as showrunners. ...

Image

The 65-year-old actor, who has famously had roles in General Hospital, The Bold and the Beautiful, and Melrose Place, opened up about what he’s learned about the challenges of starring in soap operas since the 1980s.

“I gotta tell you honestly, people that are from A-list films have no idea what it’s like to have 60 pages of dialogue on one day of a soap opera and work 14 hours and get it all right. Soap opera actors really have an edge. They work their a– off,” he told Us Weekly.

Keep reading to find out more…

Jack also elaborated on what makes performing in soap operas different than working on other type of projects in film and television.

“You’re trying to give the best performance you can, but you’ve got 60 pages that day. Whereas if...

Wagner’s Big Break Was As Andrew “Frisco” Jones

He notes that the audience’s enthusiasm for his current series, When Calls the Heart, mirrors the fervor he experienced during his time on the soap opera that kickstarted his journey.

Actors Who Were Almost Cast As Star Trek's Geordi La Forge Before LeVar Burton
Image
When "Star Trek: The Next Generation" first began in 1987, LeVar Burton was probably the biggest star in the cast. He had already been nominated for three Emmys, once in 1977 for playing Kunta Kinte in the celebrated miniseries "Roots," and two more in 1985 and 1986 for hosting the beloved book-based kid program "Reading Rainbow." The latter show would end up netting him 12 Emmy wins between 1990 and 2007, and cement his reputation as one of his generation's preeminent TV celebrities. The fact that he would be selected to play chief engineer Geordi La Forge on "Star Trek" only more deeply entrenched Burton in the public's awareness.

Geordi La Forge was, more than anything, a nerd. He was deeply interested in machines and engines, and Burton was given the lion's share of NextGen's nonsensical polysyllabic technobabble. He was also notoriously undersexed. Geordi was equipped with a visor that tapped directly into his brain, feeding him...

Jason Momoa Was in a Forgotten Soap Opera Way Before 'Aquaman'
Image
You might know him best for his 10-year portrayal as Aquaman, Protector of the Deep. Future moviegoers might remember him more as Lobo, The Ultimate Bastich. Whether Jason Momoa is a member of The Justice League or an intergalactic bounty hunter, the Hawaii-based actor had very different breaks on the small screen. Rather than cementing himself in the superhero world, Momoa first found himself in the soap opera scene. When the longstanding NBC series Baywatch was renamed Baywatch: Hawaii in its last two seasons, the then 19-year-old actor made his small-screen debut as one of the mainstay lifeguards.

But as interesting as that beach drama could be (after 10 years on television), what’s more eye-opening is that Momoa tried for that same type of slow-burning and scintillating soap opera once more after Baywatch: Hawaii was canceled in 2001. But this time, he found himself on Fox. Just two months after he...

Jealous Denise Richards Reveals 90s Love Triangle With Tori Spelling and This TV Star
Image
Denise Richards and Tori Spelling recently took a nostalgic trip back to the ’90s, reminiscing about an unexpected love triangle they once found themselves in.

The two longtime friends shared laughs and old memories on the latest episode of Denise’s Bravo reality show, Denise Richards & Her Wild Things, which aired on March 4 on Bravo.

Competing for Patrick Muldoon

Over lunch, the actresses revisited the time they both vied for the attention of Melrose Place star Patrick Muldoon early in their careers.

As Denise playfully admitted, “I used to be so jealous of you because I was on and off with Pat. He said he was dating you and could not see me, and I was very jealous.”

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum, now 54, reflected on her long history with Patrick, with whom she starred in Starship Troopers. “I’ve known Patrick Muldoon since I was 19 years old,...

Actors Who Were Almost Cast As Star Trek's Data Before Brent Spiner
Image
Before securing the role of Data on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," actor Brent Spiner was perhaps most widely recognized for his recurring role as Bob Wheeler on the sitcom "Night Court." He also had one-shot appearances on various other hit TV shows like "Tales from the Darkside," "The Paper Chase," and "Ryan's Hope." He also had a bit part in the excellent cult musical "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains" and was one of the background students in "Grease 2." Spiner had been acting in Broadway productions throughout the 1970s.

Data was a boon to his career, making him a household name, and giving him a role that he would continue to revisit for decades. Spiner has always felt ambivalent about Data, however, loving the fame, but resenting how he had been typecast. He has since referred to Data as a double-edged sword. That said, his post-"Star Trek...

When we talk about the most prolific television creators and writers, the same names often come up: Ryan Murphy, Shonda Rhimes, Dick Wolf, Taylor Sheridan, and more of the most popular and profitable names of the moment. But there's someone who's often left out of those conversations despite being responsible for some of the biggest, most beloved shows in pop culture history. Cynthia Nixon Thought Another Very Famous ‘Kristin’ Was Playing Charlotte on ‘Sex and the City’
Image
Cynthia Nixon revealed to “Sex and the City” co-star Kristin Davis on Monday that when she joined the HBO comedy as Miranda, she thought another famous “Kristin” had been cast as Charlotte: “I didn’t know who you were,” she said.

The other Kristin in question? British actress and recently a Best Actress Oscar nominee for “The English Patient,” Kristin Scott Thomas.

Nixon, who played Miranda on the hit HBO series, stopped by Davis’ “Are You a Charlotte?” podcast on Monday and talked about the funny case of mistaken identity as well as their experience on the initial episodes working together.

“Sarah [Jessica Parker] and I knew each other quite well. We’d worked together a bunch of times, and we were always auditioning for the same parts and stuff when we were kids,” Nixon said. “And Kim [Cattrall], I knew a little bit, I’d seen her in a few things.”

Netflix Nabs Darren Star & David Schulner’s Napa Valley Dramedy ‘Uncorked’ With Big Commitment
Image
Exclusive: Emily In Paris creator Darren Star and New Amsterdam creator David Schulner have teamed for Uncorked, a half-hour, single-camera dramedy that has landed at Netflix with a script-to-series commitment, sources tell Deadline.

Details of the premise are being kept under wraps, but I hear the series is set in Napa Valley and, like many of Star’s series, has a female lead.

Star and Schulner are co-writing and executive producing Uncorked through Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group, where Star has an overall and Schulner a first-look deal.

The duo recently pitched the show, which had five buyers pursuing it in a competitive situation, I hear. Uncorked ultimately landed at Netflix, home of Star’s rom-com hit Emily In Paris, with a significant script-to-series commitment.

Reps for Netflix and Universal TV declined comment.

This is one of two projects Star took out in January under the multi-year overall...

The novel hits shelves on April 29.

Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas Novel ‘Climbing in Heels’ Gets Peacock TV Deal, Darren Star Attached
Image
Peacock has won the rights to develop Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas’ upcoming novel “Climbing in Heels” into a TV series, Variety has learned.

Peacock has given the drama project a script-to-series commitment. It was first reported in December that Universal TV was taking the show to market, with Goldsmith-Thomas and Darren Star set to serve as co-writers and executive producers.

“I am thrilled that ‘Climbing In Heels’ was taken off the table so quickly by Peacock,” Goldsmith-Thomas said. “It is the perfect home for Darren and I to bring these fabulously complicated and colorful characters to life”

The official description of the show states that it is “a fictional tale following the rise of five ambitious secretaries navigating the glitzy world of 1980s Hollywood while offering a glimpse into the boys-will-be-boys club and the women who wanted a seat at a table where they were expected to serve.”

The novel will publish...
