The Best Patrick Swayze Movies: Five of Our Favorites
Image
Patrick Swayze was one of a kind. He’s the only actor I can think of who was as comfortable cutting a rug on the dance floor as demolishing a room full of bad guys with his fists of fury. When he passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2009, we lost an icon who was never really recognized as the legend he is in his time. In the years since many Patrick Swayze movies have become cult favourites, and with a Road House remake recently a hit, we decided now would be a good time to pick the five best Patrick Swayze movies.

Red Dawn (1984)

John Millius’s cold war “what if” thriller goes down in the history books as the first-ever PG-13 movie. It was also Patrick Swayze’s first major leading role, with him best known up to this point for a supporting role in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders.

Sean Penn Reveals That He Once Torched A Van With A Molotov Cocktail on ‘Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney’
Image
For all the prestigious acting awards that grace Sean Penn’s trophy case, there isn’t an Oscar statuette in the world that’s worth more to him than the statute of limitations.

John Mulaney prides himself on being the riskiest late-night host in the business, but even he wasn’t willing to risk a felony charge for the newly concluded first season of Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney. The loosely scripted, mostly off-the-cuff talk show just closed out its inaugural run with an episode entirely focused on teens’ issues, meaning that Mulaney just had to get the youth of America’s most cherished performer on the show — enter the 64-year-old Penn, smoking like a homicide detective while wearing what looked like a Pow’s combat jacket.

During the talk about “What Is on the Minds of Teens?,” Mulaney invited Penn to open up about his own adolescence, to...

Near Dark | A24 remaking for TV, Kathryn Bigelow involved
Image
Nearly 40 years on from the release of Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark, a TV remake is on the way from A24.

While it’s well known that vampires never age, the same is true to some extent for vampire films – the really good ones anyway. Surely belonging to that coterie is Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark, the 1987 neo-western horror that marked Bigelow as a huge future talent. A promise she’s been making good on over since, with the likes of Blue Steel, Point Break, Strange Days and The Hurt Locker.

It’s also well known that boutique indie studio A24 has been on the hunt for material to develop its growing television division. A Friday The 13th prequel series titled Crystal Lake is already on the way, and according to The InSneider, a TV version of Near Dark is set to follow. If that wasn’t promising enough, the...

Near Dark: A24 plotting a TV spinoff with Kathryn Bigelow?
Janeane Garofalo, Rene Russo, Tim Allen, Dennis Farina, Tom Sizemore, Stanley Tucci, Omar Epps, Ben Foster, Jason Lee, Sofía Vergara, Zooey Deschanel, Heavy D, Johnny Knoxville, and Patrick Warburton in Big Trouble (2002)
Last week, I ran a video/ article about one of the greatest cuts flicks of the eighties – Big Trouble in Little China, and noted how this one-time box office bomb has arguably become one of the crown jewels in its new owner’s (Disney) library. Another movie that was a box office flop (just one year later) but also blew up into a major cult film was the vampire flick Near Dark. Now, it looks like A24 may be trying to launch a TV version, with noted scooper Jeff Sneider revealing the scoop in his newsletter, also revealing that its legendary director, Kathryn Bigelow, is involved in some capacity.

One thing that’s interesting to note about Near Dark is how obvious it was an influence on Twilight, with the premise notably similar, even if the execution could not have been more different. In the film, a young man named...

‘Poker Face’: Simon Helberg on Singing Sondheim With John Mulaney and ‘Getting Into the S—‘ During Big Shootout Scene
Image
Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from “Poker Face” Season 2, Episode 3, now streaming on Peacock.

FBI agent Luca Clark (Simon Helberg) returned for more action in Episode 3 of “Poker Face,” which is in the midst of a second season boasting more murders, more Charlie (Natasha Lyonne) investigations and more guest stars — including stand-up comedian John Mulaney.

Rian Johnson’s charming murder-of-the-week show features different marquee guest stars in every episode. But since Helberg plays one of the show’s few recurring characters, he’s had a chance to grow the trajectory of Luca since Season 1.

“It’s exciting to see how he fumbles up the ladder, starting from driving around geriatric retired ex-cons in witness protection, all the way to cracking these really significant cases for the FBI and getting into the shit,” Helberg tells Variety. “As an actor, it’s a real dream because I haven’t gotten to...

The Surfer
Image
We never learn the name of Nicolas Cage’s character in The Surfer. (He is credited simply as ‘The Surfer’.) It might, then, be tempting to think that this film — which features yet another Cage character slowly descending into madness — is simply an example of the ‘Nicolas Cage Type’, of ‘Cage Rage’, of the kind of uniquely bizarre freakout that has for years provided ample fodder for meme-merchants and YouTube compilation editors.

But this is not quite the Cage of bees and bunnies in boxes. Instead it’s a surreal, somewhat psychedelic riff on Hitchcockian suspense from Irish director Lorcan Finnegan, who has specialised in such material, and in turn Cage seems to be channelling something closer to Jimmy Stewart in Vertigo, or Michael Douglas in Falling Down: an ordinary but obsessive man, pushed to his limits.

The crazy here is coming from outside of Cage as much as within,...

Keanu Reeves Reflects on a Decade of ‘John Wick’ With ‘Wick Is Pain’ Doc, Insisting “I Don’t Do Stunts, I Do Action”
Image
Wick Is Pain, a new documentary from director Jeffrey Doe, offers an inside look at the early struggles of making the first John Wick, tracking star Keanu Reeves and filmmaker Chad Stahelski for a decade as it goes from being an indie film to becoming a billion dollar franchise.

At a special screening of the doc in Santa Monica on Thursday, Reeves and Stahelski joined Doe, producer Erica Lee, writer Derek Kolstad and producer Josh Oreck for a Q&a about the highs and lows depicted the doc.

Stahelski noted of the film’s title and mentality that goes along with it, “I think anything hard is supposed to hurt a little bit… anything great takes effort, sometimes effort hurts a little bit.” Reeves echoed that when it came to the months and months of fight training he would go through for each film, when the directed pushed him in...

See Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’ Re-Created With Dialogue From Over 330 Films

An intrepid YouTuber has re-created Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” using dialogue plucked from 331 different movies and TV shows.

The Unusual Suspect — who has previously given the “CinemaSings” treatment to wordy tracks like Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” (257 films were needed for that one) and M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” — uploaded the mega-montage for the Oscar-winning 8 Mile track Tuesday, complete with the video evidence of where each snippet of dialogue was culled from.

Netflix's reboot of Little House on the Prairie has hitched up its wagon. The new vision of Laura Ingalls Wilder's classic series of novels, and its long-running and well-remembered TV adaptation, has found its main character. Lessons in Chemistry's Alice Halsey will play Laura Ingalls on the new TV series. Halsey steps into the shoes of Melissa Gilbert, who played the role on the original TV series. Joining her will be Luke Bracey (Point Break) and Crosby Fitzgerald (Palm Royale) as her parents, and Skywalker Hughes (Joe Pickett) as her sister Mary.

Halsey starred as the daughter of Brie Larson's chemist-turned-cooking-host on Apple TV+'s Lessons in Chemistry, and has also appeared on Days of Our Lives and Night Court. Check out the best heist movies streaming right now
Image
From slick Vegas heists to messy break-ins, these movies prove crime can pay — at least on screen.

There are few things as bad ass — or as flat-out fun — as a well-executed heist movie. You want to be that cool, that calculated, and that smart, even if it’s just for a couple of hours. Watching the plan come together is half the thrill. Watching it all fall apart? Somehow even better. A great heist movie gives you both… the rush of seeing everything click into place, and the chaos when it inevitably goes off the rails. So if you’re in the mood for some big risks, big rewards, and even bigger betrayals, here are my top seven heist movies you can stream right now, ranked.

Top 7 heist movies on streaming right now.

No. 6: ‘Inside Man’

‘Carjackers’ Prime Video Review: A Derivative French Heist Film With Decent Performances

Is the “eat the rich” subgenre headed downhill, or are we, as viewers, becoming too critical of it? 2019 was probably the year when artists from all corners of the globe cried out in unison against the economic divide through their work. Hence, we got anti-classist stories like Parasite, Knives Out, Aadhaar, and more. While we were losing our minds during the Covid-19 pandemic and watching how the wealthy were using even a devastating situation like that to oppress people and widen the gap between the upper and lower classes, Squid Game arrived in 2021. And, due to the popularity of the show, it seemed like people would really get together and reject this form of discrimination and inequality. But as soon as the public started cosplaying as the characters, while streaming platforms and YouTubers organized real-life versions of the Squid Game, I guess we began diluting the essence of “eat the rich.

The Highest-Rated Female-Directed Movies On Metacritic
Image
The directors that popular culture considers to be the greatest of all time — Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, Steven Spielberg, for example — are almost always men. While female directors have spearheaded successful films across genres like superhero, action, and horror, it is men who typically receive the funding, global attention, and prestige projects that cement their legacy in film history.

There have only been 10 women nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards, and it wasn't until 2021 that more than one woman was nominated in the category: Chloé Zhao for "Nomadland" and Emerald Fennell for "Promising Young Woman." In the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, only three women have won the Best Director prize: Chloé Zhao, Jane Campion, and Kathryn Bigelow.

There are so many incredible films made by visionary female directors, even ones that haven't received Oscar attention. Many of these films appear on Metacritic's highest-rated list. Metacritic celebrates...

Keanu Reeves Action Thriller 'Street Kings' Finds Free Streaming Success
Image
Long before he was the dog-loving assassin John Wick, the feeling towards Keanu Reeves from both critics and audiences was less than ideal. While everyone is now fully aware of how breathtaking the actor and action star truly is, this was not always the case, as the response to his largely panned 2008 crime thriller, which has now found success thanks to streaming, demonstrates.

Directed by Training Day and The Beekeeper filmmaker David Ayer, the action thriller Street Kings finds Keanu Reeves in the lead as a grieving cop who turns to violence and alcohol following his wife’s death. Starring Forest Whitaker, Hugh Laurie, Chris Evans, Common, and The Game alongside Reeves, Street Kings is now jumping in and out of the top 10 on the free streaming platform, Tubi, and you can check out the official synopsis for the thriller below.

“Tom Ludlow (Keanu Reeves), a veteran member of the LAPD,...

“Unc got the swag on, damn!”: Fans Divided Over First Look At Nicolas Cage’s New Movie ‘The Surfer’
Image
If there’s one thing you can count on in this unpredictable world, it’s that Nicolas Cage will never let you pin him down. One moment he’s sucking blood as Dracula, the next, he’s out there catching waves like a philosophical Johnny Utah. And now, with The Surfer, Cage is back in all his sun-kissed glory, and the internet is having a field day with it.

Rotten Tomatoes is already nodding in approval, but as always, the Cage fandom is split right down the middle. Some are hyped while others are preparing their best memes for what they think will be his next great cinematic misadventure.

Nicolas Cage in The Surfer | Credits: Saturn Films

Whether he’s riding a wave of success or crashing into cult-movie territory, one thing is certain, Cage never does anything halfway. So, is this another instant classic, or will it be washed away by the tide?...

XXX: Vin Diesel’s 007-clone wasn’t the threat to the franchise everyone thought
Image
In the summer of 2001, Vin Diesel became a household name. The Fast and the Furious, which was designed as little more than a modestly budgeted action programmer, became the breakout hit of that summer, capturing the cultural zeitgeist in a way that’s hard to reverse engineer. It was a major hit with the youth market. Diesel, with his bald head, muscular physique and unforgettable voice became the decade’s first icon, with audiences fascinated by his macho vibe, ambiguous ethnicity, and signature look. Studios didn’t waste any time building a star vehicle around him, with Sony making him the lead of a new super spy franchise they hoped would give James Bond some serious competition. The film, XXX, was among the most hyped films of the decade, with many thinking it would be such a phenomenon that it would make the Bond franchise irrelevant. That didn’t quite happen,...

Point Break (1991) Movie Review: Keanu Reeves Goes Method For Livin’ La Vida Loca
Marlon Brando in Último tango en París (1972)
Into the fifties, a trinity of electric young performers—Montgomery Clift, Marlon Brando and James Dean, in that order—emerged as major players in the movie industry. All students trained in The Actors’ Studio, the trio greatly popularized Method Acting. Not what we have come to know today of going extreme, sometimes wild, lengths for immersing into a role, but truthfully, it means exploring and exteriorizing the inner complexity of the human condition by way of your own personal experience.

This introduced a new type of leading man, who, unlike its precursors—the dashing and suave casanovas of Gary Cooper and Errol Flynn; the dorky and sweet charmers of Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart; or the cynical and unbeatable tough guys of John Wayne and Humphrey Bogart—showcased a deeply nuanced and conflicted emotional spectrum, offering more wounded and vulnerable representations of masculinity on screen. Their protagonists could cry just...

The Day Gene Hackman Almost Punched Me (Guest Column)
Image
Gene Hackman angrily bolted out of his chair and came at me. I swear he wanted to throw a punch.

This was Puerto Rico in 2000, during rehearsals for Under Suspicion, which my good buddy Stephen Hopkins was prepping to direct with stars Gene, Morgan Freeman, Monica Bellucci and Thomas Jane.

Those weeks of private rehearsals remain one of the greatest pleasures in my long career. Stephen, Gene, Morgan and I spent our days on an upper floor of a San Juan hotel, closed from recent hurricane damage, in a space the production built out to be identical to the actual set we would later use. It was mostly just the four of us every day for three weeks.

Stephen later told me, “If only I could have stopped you” from saying what I said to Gene. This screenplay was very much like a stage play. Stephen had sat with me...

Keanu Reeves: “You changed my life!” on the Only Director Who Fought Everyone to Cast Him That Ultimately Led to John Wick
Image
Keanu Reeves has built a career starring in action movies such as The Matrix and John Wick, but he was initially not a first-choice actor in this genre. Starting his acting journey around the late ‘80s, he found immense fame after appearing in the 1989 comedy film Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

Keanu Reeves in John Wick / Credits: Lionsgate

This achievement led to filmmakers wanting to work with him, and one director saw his potential to become an action star. Of course, this was contested by the higher-ups who didn’t believe in Reeves’ versatility.

Keanu Reeves became an action star because of Kathryn Bigelow

Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break was a crucial part of Keanu Reeves’ career as this was the movie that established him as a rising action star. In retrospect, it ultimately led to his highly successful franchise, John Wick, and all it took was complete trust from...

The internet can’t seem to get enough of him, and his very image started the Sad Keanu posts, the wholesome Keanu memes, and the never-ending irresistible fandom.

Wtf Happened to Den of Thieves?
Image
If we’re holding up the all-time best bank robbery movies, a special place is reserved for classics like Bonnie and Clyde, Dog Day Afternoon, Heat, and a handful more. But when it comes to the most underrated recent cinematic bank heists, Christian Gudegast’s 2018 movie Den of Thieves ranks right up there with the most entertaining and hyper-violent examples like The Town, Point Break, Hell or High Water, and the like. Now that Gudegast recently unloaded Den of Thieves 2: Pantera on the masses this January, it’s high time to reflect on the making of the original.

While a tad long and baldly inspired by Michael Mann’s Heat, Den of Thieves was released in January 2018 to commercial success and middling critical acclaim. For those in the dark, the story concerns a unit of former Marines turned bank robbers called The Outlaws led by Ray Merrimen (Pablo Schreiber...

10 Great Movies Where Action Heroes Play Villains
Image
Through iconic movies like Die Hard, Conan the Barbarian, and Rambo, stars like Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone practically defined the action genre for generations. Playing on the machismo of these stars, a non-stop slew of movies built up the ideal Hollywood action hero, men often known for their muscular forms and entertaining films. However, some of the best hero actors have played excellent villains too.

Action stars are often some of the most at-risk stars when it comes to typecasting, making it natural for many of them to try and spread to other roles and genres. For many, playing a bad guy has brought out the best in their skills as an actor, with some of their biggest fans praising those roles as their greatest work. While these stars are still best known for their franchise heroes, their villainous roles should be appreciated too.

For Marvel to Return to Glory, ‘Captain America’ Needed to Go Global
Image
“Captain America: Brave New World” director Julius Onah is a proud American, but he’s also a truly international director. Born in Nigeria, a globetrotter through his earliest years, and now based in Berlin, the indie filmmaker behind “Luce” was a bold choice to direct one of Marvel’s biggest tentpoles and bring a new Captain America, Sam Wilson, to the big screen.

But as with any MCU movie, Onah isn’t making a film — even one with “America” in the title — just for an American audience. Since its peak with “Avengers: Endgame,” Marvel has had a tough time trying to regain its former prominence and box office domination, seeing some hits, yes, but definitely some misses. So Onah knew that in getting back there, “Brave New World” needed to be a universal story with ties to all different cultures, especially his own.

Onah grew up in America from a young age,...

Keanu Reeves & Sandra Bullock's 'Speed' Is a Major Streaming Hit on Max

As amazing as Keanu Reeves is in the John Wick franchise, The Matrix: Resurrections, Toy Story 4, and even Sonic the Hedgehog 3, sometimes you just can't beat a classic. Ask anyone what Reeves' best action movie is, and you might get a few answers, including Point Break, The Matrix, or maybe even Constantine. But one film that you're guaranteed to hear is Speed, the 1994 action classic that temporarily gave the entire country a fear of buses.

Speed is enthralling audiences once again on streaming, as Max users can't get enough of Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock driving a bus and stopping a domestic terrorist (Speed was a wild movie!). The movie is currently putting in a strong showing on Max's Top 10 most popular movies of the week -- if it drops below fifth place, it might explode. Directed by Jan de Bont, Speed stars Reeves as Jack Tavern, a...

Keanu Reeves & Sandra Bullock's Speed Is Streaming on Max
Image
Speed, the iconic action film starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, has found a new streaming home this February. Fans of the action classic that shot Reeves and Bullock to stardom will be able to stream the movie on Max starting from today. It was a major blockbuster back in 1994, making over $350 million at the box office and winning two Academy Awards the year after in the Best Sound and Best Sound Effects Editing categories. The film was also acclaimed by critics and audiences, landing a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with renowned critics like Roger Ebert awarding it four out of four stars.

The movie, directed by Jan de Bont, also stars Dennis Hopper, Jeff Daniels, Joe Morton, Beth Grant and Alan Ruck, among others. Speed follows an LAPD officer named Jack, who's forced to get on board a bus that has a bomb rigged into the speedometer. Luckily, one of the passengers,...

This 92% Fresh Edgar Wright Action Film Is Perfect for Kingsmen Fans
Image
The Kingsman film series is known for its complex stunts and practical effects. Perhaps more importantly, it’s famous for tying these already meticulous scenes to energetic music. All the Kingsmen films enchant audiences with this “musical beat-em-up” style that emphasizes the action movie equivalent of sugar-drenched eye candy. At this point, it’s become a series staple. Thanks to the complexities of such work, it’s also a rarity in modern cinema.

However, Kingsman fans will be pleased to learn there’s another movie that utilizes the same type of vivacious visual thrills. Two years after the debut of Kingsman: The Secret Service, Edgar Wright put a vehicular spin on cinematic “tempo” tantrums with Baby Driver. Like Kingsman, Baby Driver is a thoroughbred action film with criminal thriller elements. Its fine pedigree pulls from iconic titles like American Graffiti, Point Break, and Reservoir Dogs. At the same time, its...

10 Mindless & Fun Action Movies If You Love The Fast & Furious Franchise
Image
From the bouncer brawler Road House to the high-octane spy caper True Lies, there are plenty of great mindless action movies out there for Fast & Furious fans to enjoy. What makes the Fast & Furious movies so much fun is that they allow the audience to switch off their brain. They flagrantly defy the laws of physics with their absurd action set-pieces. James Bond movies tend to have complicated plots and the Bourne movies deal with heavy themes, but the Fast & Furious saga doesn’t strive to do anything more than entertain.

There are plenty of other great action movies that fall into this category. Directors like Michael Bay and stars like Jason Statham have made a career out of action movies that stimulate the audience’s adrenaline while giving their intellect some much-needed rest. There are action movies with ridiculous premises that make no sense, like the face-swapping plot of Face/Off,...

‘Point Break’ Screenwriter Peter Iliff on What Pacific Palisades Means to Him and Westside Recovery
Image
Our hearts are broken.

So many dear pals lost homes in the wildfires ravaging Los Angeles and Pacific Palisades. Many were neighbors, Hollywood pals and friends from my 20-plus years of sobriety in the 12-step recovery community, which has had an enormous presence in the Palisades and Malibu for decades. First, let me say, my wife Ruthanne and I are safe. We moved out of the Palisades some years ago. We bought a home across from a park near downtown Culver City, but we spent 28 good years in the Palisades.

My love affair with Pali started when I was 8 and lived in Philadelphia. My father died, and every summer mom sent me to the Palisades to spend a month with good ‘ol Uncle Bob. He lived on Grenola Street with a front porch that overlooked the ocean where he’d sit and listen to a young Vin Scully calling Los Angeles Dodger games.

Was Tom Hanks Almost Cast As Jack Traven In Speed (1994) Instead Of Keanu Reeves?
Image
Tom Hanks almost replaced Keanu Reeves in Speed? (Photo Credit – Instagram/Wikipedia)

Back in the early ’90s, Tom Hanks was in talks to play Jack Traven in Jan de Bont’s iconic action-thriller Speed, instead of the iconic Keanu Reeves.

Hanks passed on the project, though the reason remains unclear. His career choices show a preference for depth-driven films like Saving Private Ryan and Road to Perdition. Speed’s action-packed thrills likely didn’t fit his narrative-focused style.

But Hanks wasn’t the only megastar to sidestep the role. Tom Cruise also turned it down before Reeves snagged the part. At the time, Reeves had gained some buzz from Point Break and Bill & Ted, but Speed catapulted him into Hollywood’s action elite. By the time The Matrix rolled around, Reeves was untouchable in the genre—and Speed was a big reason why.

Den Of Thieves Almost Became A TV Show Instead Of A Film Franchise [Exclusive]
Image
It's extremely early in the year, but I imagine it will be tough for another 2025 movie title to come along that's more metal than "Den of Thieves 2: Pantera." But if this grungy, pulpy franchise had gone a slightly different way during development, we would have been deprived of that title -- and indeed, the "Den of Thieves" movies in their entirety. Instead, we came very close to getting a "Den of Thieves" TV series.

"When I did my research for 'Den 1' back in the day, I just came across so many different heists and I got to know the cops that were investigating them, and I just had so much material that we knew that we were going to be building a franchise," writer/director Christian Gudegast told me in a recent interview. "There was a minute way back in the day where it was going to become a TV series.

25 Best Heist Movies Of All Time, Ranked
Image
The best heist movies fuse elements of many different genres. They encompass a broad range of stories and filmmaking styles because they are so adaptable. As long as a team of characters is all working together to steal something, then it falls under the category of a heist movie. The genre isn't restricted to any tone, time period, or particular style. Of course, the heist genre has more than its fair share of stereotypes, but the best filmmakers know how to use these to their benefit.

The heist genre has produced some of cinema's most gripping thrillers and some of its funniest comedies. Violence features frequently, like in Snatch and Point Break, but it isn't a necessity. Other movies use a heist as the perfect excuse to craft a slick mystery, with the criminals outsmarting their victims without them ever knowing they were there. Whichever approach a heist movie decides to take,...

10 Remakes Of 1990s Movies That Couldn't Replicate Their Success
Image
Over the last decade or two, one particular trend in Hollywood has left moviegoers divided. This specific trend involves major studios electing to remake their fan-favorite films from years before. Some enjoy seeing their favorite stories be brought back to life, while others would prefer to see studios dedicating their resources to more original ideas. Regardless of where you stand on this debate, it is impossible to deny that the movie world has recently been flooded with remakes of popular films.

A major reason why so many of these remakes are happening is because they often feel like a surefire way to make a massive profit by capitalizing on a pre-existing audience. However, several recent attempts have demonstrated that success is not a guarantee. Some remakes unfortunately end up thoroughly underwhelming their audiences, failing to offer all the exciting elements that made the original films so popular, particularly when it...

This Forgotten 38-Year-Old Western Horror Is 1 of the Best Vampire Cult Classics (& It's Perfect for Nosferatu Fans)

Quick Links Near Dark Is a Vampire Movie With Style Romance Ties These Vampire Narratives Together Vampires Always Have a Hint of Tragedy

The vampire genre, like Nosferatu, has risen from the grave. The German Expressionist film originally directed by F.W. Murnau has found new life in the hands of Robert Eggers. The innovative director known for his magical debut in The Witch modernized a classic vampire story. Setting the classic story of Dracula in a German setting, a young woman must use her psychic connection to an ancient evil to save her loved ones. The generally faithful adaptation gives a few surprises that are standard for Egger’s gory and off-putting brand.

Nosferatu is a natural entry point for any vampire fan, but there are some shining jewels in the genre that benefit from a closer look. Over the decades, there have been dozens of vampire films with different but unique angles,...

"You Understand The Work He Put In": Keanu Reeves' Gun Skills In $174M Action Movie Gets Praise For Commitment & Accuracy From Expert
Image
Keanu Reeves largely became a household name due to his work in the action genre. Point Break in 1991 was a seminal film in this respect, as was Speed in 1994. Of course, the film that cemented Reeves' position as an action star was The Matrix in 1999, which was a massive hit both critically and commercially, and was followed by four sequels.

After a career lull starting in the late 2000s that extended into the early 2010s, Reeves came back in a big way in 2014 with the release of John Wick. Reeves' portrayal of the titular assassin, aided by the assured action direction of Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, was a surprise hit, and he has now reprised the role for five films in total, including the acclaimed John Wick: Chapter 4 in 2023. Reeves can next be seen as Wick in the upcoming spinoff, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas.

This Underrated Keanu Reeves Thriller Turning 10 In 2025 Is Way More Violent & Dark Than Anything In John Wick
Image
Keanu Reeves' monumental, violent film, John Wick, celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2024, but an underrated Reeves thriller that followed went even darker. Some of Keanu Reeves' best films are infinitely rewatchable, with many of them helping to solidify him as one of the best action stars of all time. Released in 2014, John Wick was considered a key part of the revival in Reeves' career, which also helped him become an action star once again.

John Wick was an instant success, resulting in three sequels so far, and several spin-offs, with Ballerina set to be released on June 6, 2025. The John Wick franchise is violent and dark, artfully depicting a world of assassins that paint the streets (and various other places) with loads of blood. Alongside that franchise, though, the Keanu Reeves thriller, Knock Knock, remains one of the darkest films of his entire career despite having a unique tone compared to...

Keanu Reeves Wasn’t Happy When He Found Out His Co-stars Are Earning More Than Him for a Movie He Hates the Most

Keanu Reeves has starred in many films over the years. Some have been massive hits while others could have seen better outcomes. What nearly all of them had in common was the fact that the actor had willingly been a part of them and was therefore somewhat linked to whatever fate it saw.

However, what happens when the actor is tricked? When his wish to aid a film in its success ends with him being put in legal shackles and forced to ride out a project that he never wished to lead.
