Practically a truncated version of Wuthering Heights, an orphan of questionable origin is brought home by a patriarch of a rich haciendero family. His presence brought mixed feelings between the haciendero sibling. One fell in love with him and the other felt contempt from what he felt was his father's revenge over the death of his older sibling. Time passed by and the patriarch dies and all hell breaks loose.
This is very uneven.
This started horribly flat. The setup for the great tragedy of it all is rushed and lacks flow. In fact, that flow problem would a very consistent issue in the film. Like after good scene, it goes into some clunky connecting the dots to another good scene.
Though all the leads but especially Richard Gomez was acting to high heavens. Big kudos to him, he literally embodies that dark and moody Heathcliff I had read from reviews even how amateurishly the script is. The script was very cliff notes version of the film but you could clearly see that the writer was trying his best to cram things up AND it shows.
Such a missed opportunity.

A lot Filipino movies are not known for its quality. Most producers only make movies for commercial purposes. This was a refreshing change from their "success formula." Carlos Siguion-Reyna adapted Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" and gave it a local flavor--it was well done although I didn't care much for Richard Gomez' acting abilities.
The film was pretty accurate in its adaptation and quite ambitious for Philippine cinema. The choice of Batanes island as the setting was perfect...we don't have moors here in the Philippines--we have beaches! Dawn Zulueta fit "Cathy's" role to a T. I only wish the producers of this film will continue to give us Filipinos a higher level of cinema experience. Hopefully, they will issue a DVD copy for us who want to watch it again.
