Choudhary does accept the match and the wedding of Raju and Malti are celebrated. Pandit Shaadiram Gharjore is a village match-maker. When he takes some guy's family to see Malti, Hoshyaarchand (her father) insult the family and throw them out, saying he wants a son-in-law at least 40 times wealthier than he. Panditji is so humiliated that he vows to do something about Hoshyaarchand's ego. This is where the story begins. Panditji goes to his friend, Raju (Coolie No. 1) (who, by the way, has fallen in love with this rich girl since he saw her picture before panditji took the random guy's family to see her), and convinces him to pretend to be the son of the richest man in Asia. After a lot of bootlicking on the part of Hoshyaarchand, Malti and Raju get married. Angered at Choudhry Hoshiarchand Shikarpuri Bakulwala for humiliating him, matchmaker, Shaadiram Gharjodhe, decides to teach him a lesson. He introduces Choudhry to a multi-millionaire named Raju, so that Choudhry can get him married to his only daughter, Malti. Choudhry's eyes light up when he comes to know about Raju and his wealth and he readily agrees to have Malti marry him. Malti meets with Raju and both fall in love with each other. Their marriage is arranged, which takes place with great pomp and ceremony. It is only after the marriage that Choudhry finds out that Raju is really a poor coolie, and not a multi-millionaire. Shaadiram Gharjode (Sadashiv Amrapurkar), a matchmaker, is once humiliated by Hoshiyar Chand (Kader Khan) when Shaadiram goes to inform him about a family wanting to marry their son to Hoshiyar's daughter. Hoshiyar Chand insults them as he wants both his daughters to marry into the richest family. Goverdhan (Shakti Kapoor) is Chand's brother-in-law. Chand's mother Mrs. Choudhry (Shammi) is not supportive of his dismissive attitude towards prospective grooms and their families.

Raju (Govinda) is a coolie, a bus stand porter who proudly wears his badge - "Coolie No. 1". Raju is known among his fellow porters for being heroic. One Day he stops a guy Mahesh Pratap Singh Mehta (Mahesh Anand), who was running from the police and turns him over to the authorities. His suitcases had drug money stuffed into it. Mahesh warns Raju of his vengeance. Shaadiram Gharjode had met Raju at the bus station, when he had saved Shaadiram and his client from local ruffians who wanted to loot them. Raju gave all the money back to Shaadiram and his client.

Gharjode decides to teach Hoshiyar Chand a lesson. Raju is smitten by Malti's photo, Gharjode hatches a plan to get the poor porter married to Malti and exact his revenge. He takes Raju to Hoshiyar Chand's village pretending to be a rich family. Raju poses as the prince of Singapore, Kunwar Mahendra Pratap Singh Mehta and wins Malti's heart. In the process, Malti's sister Shalini (Kaanchan) falls for Deepak.

Hoshiyar is impressed and he wants his daughter Malti (Karisma Kapoor) to marry Raju. Chand's eyes light up when he comes to know about Raju and his wealth, and he readily agrees to have Malti marry him. Malti had earlier met with Raju, and both fall in love with each other. They get married. Goverdhan goes with Raju and Malti to live in Raju's new house.

Raju pretends that his rich father is not accepting "poor" Malti as his Bahu and has kicked them both out of their house. Shaadiram arranges a shack for them to live in and tells Malti that Raju has filed a court case on his father to ask for his fair share of the family wealth. Malti tries to make the best out of the given situation by cheering up Mahendra, which makes him feel guilty.

In addition, Shaadiram and Deepak (Harish Kumar) (Raju's friend) confuse Goverdhan and leave him on the streets of Mumbai to fend for himself.

The trouble becomes double when Hoshiyar Chand comes to town to visit his daughter and son-in-law but spots Raju as a coolie at the bus stand. Hoshiyar Chand creates a ruckus, saying that Raju is a fraud who posed as a rich prince and married his daughter. Spontaneously, Raju pretends to not recognize Hoshiyar Chand and shoos him away. Raju comes home dressed as Mahendra and explains that Hoshiyar Chand must have seen his twin brother Raju who his father threw out due to his drinking and gambling addictions. Hoshiyar Chand buys this story and decides to get Shalini married to Raju, so that both his daughters will live filthy rich lives. But Shalini loves Raju's mechanic's friend Deepak. To entice the Coolie twin brother, Chand offers him an apartment and a taxi for income.

Raju keeps getting into trouble since he can be only at one place at one time. One such incident forces Raju, Malti and Hoshiyar Chand to file a missing complaint for Kunwar Mahendra Pratap Singh Mehta. Inspector Rakesh Pandey (Tiku Talsania) gets skeptical of the situation and starts to believe that Raju and his twin brother Mahendra are the same person.

Chand forces Coolie to stay with him at the apartment, but then Malti comes crying that Raju hasn't returned home. Raju finds it very difficult to play this double role. Chand gets suspicious, so he sends Coolie and Shalini for a movie, and goes to see Raju with Malti. Unknown to him Coolie had handed over Shalini to Deepak and he went to be with Malti instead. Chand is satisfied that Raju/Coolie are not the same person.

Soon, Shalini is pregnant. At the same time Coolie has written a letter to Chand that he is not worthy of his daughter and is leaving. Chand blames Coolie for making Shalini pregnant, which Raju knows is not true. Chand goes to Gajendra to complain and Gajendra's manager Shukla (Mahavir Shah) figures that Chand thinks Gajendra has 2 sons. The Manager is in cahoots with Gajendra's son.

Raju had rented a big bungalow to show to Hoshiyar before the wedding (This bungalow is usually rented out for film shootings). That bungalow belonged to a rich person Gajendra (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) whose son was a criminal Mahesh (Mahesh Anand) whom Raju helped arrest. Gajendra kicks his son out when he figures that his own son is a criminal and convict. Mahesh figures out Raju's deception to Hoshiyar & traps him in a plot to kill his own dad. To get back at him and Raju, Mahesh stabs Gajendra and frames Raju for the same. Gajendra's manager lures Raju to Gajendra's house where he finds Gajendra's stabbed body. Raju is stopped by Shukla and his son, who hand him over to the police.

Inspector Pandey arrives to arrest him, but Raju informs him that Gajendra is still alive and needs critical medical care, following which he escapes police custody. Raju runs to Deepak and both of them hatch a plan to pretend to be nurses from Singapore to save Gajendra's life, as that is Raju's only proof of innocence. At the hospital, Inspector Pandey tells Hoshiyar Chand, Malti and Shalini that Raju is just a poor porter who pretended to be Kunwar Mahendra Pratap Singh Mehta.

While trying to save Gajendra, Raju and Deepak bump into Malti, Hoshiyar Chand and Shalini, who comes to abort Shalini's unborn child who came because of Deepak. Raju confesses his fraud to Malti, and she forgives him. Hoshiyar Chand and Malti help Raju and Deepak to stop Mahesh from killing Gajendra.

Once he gains consciousness, Gajendra announces that since Raju saved his life, he is like a son to him. Shalini also announces her love for Deepak. When Hoshiyar Chand cries about his sons-in-law being a porter and a mechanic, Shaadiram Gharjode arrives and tells Hoshiyar Chand that it was bound to happen to someone so arrogant and proud of his wealth. Gharjode explains that for a happy marriage, wealth isn't needed - love is.
