Why Paramount Sent Gene Roddenberry Away For Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Image
The background is well-known to Trekkies. Throughout the 1970s, "Star Trek" exploded in popularity. This was thanks largely to some sweet eternal syndication deals, which allowed the series to stay on the air pretty much in perpetuity. In the mid-'70s, "Star Trek" conventions were born, revealing to the world that there was a passionate, ultra-nerdy contingency of Trek fans willing to discuss and celebrate their pop obsession in public. It was at these conventions that series creator Gene Roddenberry opened an ongoing conversation with Trekkies as to what made his series so appealing. One could argue that it wasn't until these conversations that Roddenberry discovered the depth of his show, and the pragmatic philosophies of pacifism and diplomacy it represented.

It was in 1975 that Roddenberry began working on a "Star Trek" movie, although that early concept fell apart over some complex script issues. After that, Roddenberry began work on "Star Trek: Phase II,...

Post-apocalyptic gore-filled sci-fi ‘Mindwarp’ coming to UK Blu!
Image
Eureka Entertainment have announced the release of Mindwarp, aka Brain Slasher, the post-apocalyptic gore-filled sci-fi horror classic of the early 90s, on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK as part of the Eureka Classics range from 22 February 2021. The first print run of 2000 copies will feature a Limited-Edition O-card Slipcase and Collector’s Booklet.

In the future, life will be a dream. And reality a nightmare. In a post-apocalyptic world, one woman (Marta Alicia) relies on computer fantasies to entertain herself, but a glitch sends her to a far-off wasteland to deal with monsters called Crawlers. She is saved by a young rebel, but the pair are later captured and brought underground by the Crawlers. There, an overlord called the Seer (Angus Scrimm; the Phantasm series) presides over the kingdom and tries to make life miserable for his captives.

The first film produced as part of the Fangoria Films label,...

Blu-ray Movie Review: Mindwarp
Mindwarp, a post-apocalyptic, sci-fi gore film produced by Fangoria Magazine in 1992, is a cup half-full, cup half-empty proposition. In the plus column, it stars Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead) and Angus Scrimm (Phantasm), two genre icons who give it their all no matter how low-budget or poorly conceived the film around them happens to be. And despite being the brainchild of a publication dedicated to glorifying the grossest moments in movie history, Mindwarp surprisingly chooses to emphasize ideas over shock effects.

Yet there’s no mistaking Mindwarp for anything other than an ambitious copycat slogging through the direct-to-video ditches. And it’s an odd release choice for Twilight Time, who usually focus on lesser known but more widely respected classics from studio back catalogs. But for those with an affection for the material – or Bruce Campbell in particular, who never quite got a fair chance at being a big-screen action...

Blu-ray Release: Mindwarp
Blu-ray Release Date: Oct. 8, 2013

Price: Blu-ray $29.95

Studio: Twilight Time

Angus Scrimm gets under your skin and into your brain in Mindwarp.

Horror veterans Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead) and Angus Scrimm (Phantasm) co-star in the 1992 cult horror-science fiction film Mindwarp, making its Blu-ray debut through from Twilight Time.

The movie, directed by Steven Barnett and produced by Fangoria Films (an off-shoot of the popular horror film magazine), tells the grisly tale of a post-apocalyptic society in which the privileged exist only as “Dreamers,” eternally plugged into a virtual reality fantasyland, Inworld. Meanwhile, in the ravaged Outworld, humans have mutated into savage flesh-eaters, led by a mysterious, charismatic despot (Scrimm) interested only in survival.

The Blu-ray includes an isolated audio track of Mark Governor’s score, the original theatrical trailer, and liner notes by Julie Kirgo.

The Blu-ray is now available for pre-order and as supplier Twilight Time prints up only 3,000 copies of each title,...
