It's a decision we've all faced. There you are, a small-time Scottish farmer minding his own, when the big-shot developer from the city wants to buy up your land and force you out. You hate him, right? So when you get the chance to save his life, what do you do? That dilemma is at the heart of this farmer drama, starring a sprinkling of well-respected, mainly TV-bound British (but not Scottish) actors such as Bernard Hill and John Bowles. Oh, and unlike a few recent releases, there is no subtitling or redubbing; this is Scotland-lite, with the right amount of breathtaking scenery but none of that Irvine Welsh-style talking like the locals do.
Think Walking Tall (with The Rock and Johnny Knoxville) meets Hamish Macbeth. On the wild lands of Scotland a lonesome farmer fights tooth and nail to keep his farm from the clutches of a money grabbing English businessmen.
Shepherd on the Rock is a fairly decent film which apart from a wobbly ending will keep most people entertained. Bernard Hill is excellent in the lead and outshines the rest of the unknown cast....even his dog Jess in the film acts better than the films romantic interest. However, the support acting aside, this film is well worth watching. If its on TV I would recommend it, and its probably the only way you'll see it. The chances of this being released on a 20 quid DVD are unfortunately highly unlikely.

A good story of real life values and morals pitted against greed and corruption.
A film like this makes one think about the important things in life.
Well worth watching, with a rather obvious happy ending.
This is nice little movie that you can watch with your whole family. The plot may be predictable but it's a fun film.
Bernard Hill is excellent as sheepherder Tam Ferrier. It's a good Pre-Theoden role. He had a very good chemistry with the actors who played Jean (Besty Brantly) and Ewan (John Bowles).
This film is in the same vein as "Owd Bob". Which is another good film for the whole family.
I would recommend this film to anyone.
Another cool thing is to see Doug Bradley minus his Hellraiser Pinhead look.

At times this reminded me of Minder. What with the Camel hair coat worn by the dodgy geezer with his 2 heavies. The story was just so stupid that it called for fast forwarding. Why did they get an unknown American actress to play the female lead.By far and away the best actors were Bernard Hill and the dog.
¿Sabías que…?
- TriviaThe 'café' where Tam and Jean went for a meal was the same 'café' that featured in the film, Geordie (1955).
