Body Snatchers is the third film adaptation of Jack Finney's novel, the first being Muertos vivientes (1956), followed by the remake of the same name Los usurpadores de cuerpos (1978). A fourth adaptation was later made, Invasores (2007).
Warner Bros. originally scheduled the film for release in October 1992. They opted for the more comedic Transilvania, mi amor (1992) as their horror release that season, as it was felt that the glut of serious genre fare such as Hellraiser III: Puerta al infierno III (1992), Candyman (1992), Dr. Bisturí (1992), and Drácula (1992) would overwhelm the film's potential. The release was moved around several times in 1993 before its unceremonious limited release came in January 1994.
