Edina "Eddy" Monsoon and Patsy Stone are successful businesswomen and best friends. Their spare time is filled with celebrity gossip, parties, alcohol and drugs. While middle-aged they still think they're twenty-something and it's the swinging seventies. This does not sit well with Eddy's straight-laced daughter, Saffron.
An hilarious, over-the-top comedy, parodying the lifestyles of the rich and famous. The excesses are extreme and the superficialities of their existences are exposed. Highlighting this is the conservative nature of Eddy's daughter Saffron who is the polar opposite of her mother. It also makes for a funny juxtaposition as usually the kids are the wild ones, the parents the sensible ones.
Throw in Eddy's mother to add some ditsyness and naivety and Bubble as the hyperactive, fast-talking underling and it's absolutely brilliant.

This is outstanding, one of my favorites. 5 stars all the way!!! This comedy totally rules, I've never laughed so much with a television show as with AbFab. The characters are hilarious, the situations are hilarious and the jokes are good and the show has a great feeling. I loved this show. I loved every character in it. I wouldn't want people to use it as a role model, but it certainly made me feel better about my own partying habits! I will have to get the disc sets as they become available because I sure do miss seeing the show. It will make anyone with a sense of humor laugh until their sides hurt. I love the slash of personalities and how the roles within the Monsoon family are switched between Eddy and Saffy. Patsy is what makes the show worthwhile because she is hilarious and very opinionated towards Saffy.

In the current climate of social restriction and political correctness, there is something very liberating about watching people do all the things society tells us are bad without one iota of regret. This is made even more powerful by making the characters a pair of middle-aged, upper-crust women who "should know better."
Who says Brits are stuffy? In the outrageous world of jet-setters Edina Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders--is there anything she CAN'T do?) and Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley), moderation is but a myth, darling! These two babes are BENEATH the Valley of the Dolls--piles of pills, mountains of coke, gallons of Bolly-Stoli cocktails...and whatever else is fashionable at the present time. They slavishly follow trends, kiss the butts of celebrities, torment Eddy's straight-laced daughter Saffron (Julia Sawalha), and basically do whatever must be done to get exactly what they want, when they want it. There are no lessons, no judgments, no treacly sentimental bits to tug at one's heartstrings. Thank bloody God!
AbFab is the perfect alternative for those repulsed by the sugary sewage typically pumped through the picture tube, where everyone does "the right thing" ("Don't do that in front of me or I'll throw up!"). Sharp in all departments, with a terrific cast, hilarious (and surprisingly true) writing, and a gorgeously gaudy wardrobe for Eddy ("Lacroix, sweetie!"). And best of all, after a five-year absence, THEY ARE BACK! These lovable lushes have NOT had their Last Shout--and don't you dare think they've mellowed! Joyously self-absorbed chaos is still the name of the game, and nobody plays it better than Eddy and Patsy.
"All right, cheers, thanks a lot."

Absolutely Fabulous remains just that, fabulous, and watching it twenty years later, it remains as funny, wild and original as ever. The duo of Patsy and Edina were a creation of pure genius, the wilder they got, the funnier.
Laughs galore, the whole series is littered with classic episodes, my favourites being France and Happy New Year, the one liners in each are perfection.
I've always thought the cast had as much fun making it as we had watching it, there always appeared to be a real closeness there.
Will we ever get the likes of this again, not sure, but I hope so.
Comedy gold. 10/10

I recently purchased the box set of seasons one to three and watched it in entirety in about three days. I used to watch this show obsessively about ten years ago when Comedy Central would air it on Saturday afternoons, at around 4:00PM I believe, and upon viewing the first three seasons all over again, I re-realized that this one of the best TV shows on the entire planet. I have dreams about meeting Jane Horrocks or Bubble, it really does not even matter which one. I will also often rewind specific scenes on my DVD player because to be perfectly honest with you, and totally geeky, I can not stop laughing, mostly at Bubble. Well actually I can't really say mostly at Bubble, because really all the leads are just so awesome and funny. Extremely high recommendation!

The first time I saw AbFab I wasin elementary school and I didn't understand anything else except that I was fascinated by these weird loud British women. I grew up with AbFab and it has stayed by my side all this time. I love Edwina, adore Patsy and whenever I watch this series I get crazy entertained.

Absolute genius. This is my second time around watching this show and I appreciate it even more. Edwina and Patsy are comic geniuses and all the supporting actresses actors are just so essential. I know this show was show was popular in England in the '90's, but in 2024 in the US it is still so relevant. It is just as fantastic as I remember it in my teens/twenties. One o the most unique and hilarious shows to ever his the airwaves. Edwina is so classic, and Patsy is perfect as her sidekick, and the daughter as the dowdy stick in the mud. It is the essence of true comedy and should've given as much credence.

Comedies are hard to quantify. I don't know many that stand the test of time. Even highly rated ones like Friends, MASH. Married With Children and Seinfeld watched in 2024/2025 for the first time aren't as funny as watching them when they first came out and might even be considered offensive. Its often because what is considered humorous changes from one generation to another. Absolutely Fabulous which focuses on two middle aged British women who are successful but also desperate to keep of the appearance that the are hip and young. They spend most, if not all their time getting drunk or on drugs much to the chagrin of one of their daughters who plays the "straight man" to their antics.
The show is highly entertaining but it is also highly offensive by todays standards. You will often wish that the daughter would just leave her mother to her own devices. The two women the show focuses on are often times incredibly unlikeable but that is where the comedy is. That they can be both unlikable but also extremely fun to watch. I understand the low reviews of people who watched this for the first time. I couldn't stand Seinfeld watching it for the first time a few months ago but I do get why people like it. Comedies are a weird genre.

The sourpusses who write reviews of "Absolutely Fabulous" and don't "get" the humor are some pretty miserable folks.
If you watch this series and don't find it funny, better get into therapy.

My husband and I agree that Johnny Depp, no matter what HE says, had to take as his model for the pirate Edina's character. In some outfits, except for the goatee, he is a dead ringer for her and her actions. When I saw the Pirate movies for the first time I kept thinking it reminded me of something I had seen elsewhere. Then I was flipping through the channels and there it was! Eddy was in the kitchen and she had a scarf around her head and twitching her head just like the pirate. I know Mr. Depp claims that he got his moves from a rock star, and possibly this is true for some of it, but somewhere, sometime he too was exposed to Ab Fab.

Vulgar, unfunny women rolling around on set. An embarrassed daughter the complete opposite end of the scale. Nothing works, awful script. Just get hammered and spew out whatever comes into your head (or mouth). Can't understand why this is so popular.

I'm going to be honest. The first time I saw the show, I didn't like it one bit. It annoyed me and I didn't find it funny. But one afternoon I was stuck in bed with a cold and Absolutely Fabulous happened to be on. I decided to give it another chance.
Wow, am I glad that I gave it second chance!
Absolutely Fabulous has a definite oddball sense of humor that can be really hilarious. I find myself laughing out loud at the oddest comments and jokes. Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders are a great team and never cease to impress me. I own almost all the DVDs and I don't typically buy television shows on DVD, usless I really enjoy them. As the tag line says, sin is in, sweetie! 10/10

I just rewatched this series after not watching since middle 90's. I still laughed my head off! They really poke fun at all female proclivities. The series stands the test of time. It is still absolutely hilarious.

It's difficult to find the right words to describe just how good this comedy truly is. Coming from a team of seasoned professionals in British comedy, Jennifer Saunders' and Dawn French's writing is fabulous (no pun intended!), and when teamed with Ruby Wax, and a splendid cast including the incomparable Joanna Lumley, you have the making of an iconic series that will continue to provide laughs FOREVER!!

I don't care what anyone thinks is the best series. The humor and dialogue continues to go unmatched. Apparently this review isn't long enough but if someone has to use 150 characters to get you to watch this then it's just not for you.

I am a big believer in sometimes the best TV, comedy, film etc is short lived, a moment of genius that lives on. This is how I feel about AbFab. Series 1-3 were and still are ultimate comedy gold and that's why I rated it 10. However the same cannot be said for the remainder of the series. More misses than hits, super lazy writing and it's kind of become what it used to take the piss out of which is a great shame. Still one of the best British comedies ever in it's early series.

I always heard Absolutely Fabulous was funny, so when I saw it was coming on PBS Saturday nights, I wanted to check it out - see if it delivered according to the praise it receives. I did laugh the first time, and quite honestly, I felt bad, because the jokes are so offensive. The more I watched this, I found that I wasn't amused. It stops being funny when you realize these characters have serious mental and emotional issues. It's nothing else besides 2 narcissistic women - Edina "Eddie" Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley) - talking nonsense for a half an hour. They live in London/Holland Park, and are still stuck in the Swinging 60s. Despite abusing drugs and alcohol, Eddie has managed to build a successful career in public relations. She's slightly overweight, and doesn't know how to wear outfits that complement her figure. She wears large clothing, making her look even less flattering, and not to mention ridiculous. Patsy is a former model and fashion director. She abuses substances more excessively in comparison to Eddie, almost overdosing several times, including needing to have her stomach pumped one of the times after using rave drugs. They have this bizarre, codependent friendship going on. They've known each other since childhood, and although they're not involved romantically, they've spent most of their life together. Eddie is twice divorced. Her long-suffering daughter, Saffron (Julia Sawalha), from her second marriage (which ended due to her ex-husband revealing he was gay) lives with them. Patsy is verbally and physically abusive towards her, using her hair as an ashtray, and she once tied her to a traffic light. Someone please tell me, where is the joke? I don't know, I guess if you work in mental health like I do, watching people act like this isn't funny. I think it's concerning that it stayed on for 20 years, considering how inane it was. That doesn't say much about the collective IQ of human society. I laugh at some pretty dumb things, and I can't even find anything humorous about this show. It glamorizes drug addiction and alcoholism. Maybe it would have the potential to be entertaining if Eddie wasn't a mom. I think what solidified it's not funny is the episode "Birth," when Saffron breaks down in tears as Eddie is trying to teach her how to get a boyfriend. It's impossible not to feel sorry for her. I know it's pretend, but you have to stop and ask yourself, how much of this is actually grounded in fantasy? Some kids do have parents who stay out all night drinking or going on a drug binge, leaving them to feel unwanted and scared. She basically had to raise herself because Eddie was drunk all of the time. I don't even have kids, and I think it's disturbing how the writers tried to make it seem like that wasn't a big deal. She had a son from her first marriage, and living with her caused him to struggle so much, that he left the country. Parody or satire aside - it's a hot mess. I do think it's nice how the episodes revolved around a variety of topics, as TV shows that are geared towards women don't focus on anything else besides relationships, but watching Eddie and Patsy act belligerent and selfish gets old quick. It's like the female version of Scarface. If you're into the party scene, and you sleep around, don't even have kids, because you would just be bringing them into a dysfunctional environment, and that's not fair to them. What an empty show.
AbFab is probably the best Britcom ever made. I Absolutely love it!!! Each episode was brilliantly written and hilariously funny. Jennifer Saunders demonstrated how brilliant she is at writing / performing without Dawn French and Joanna Lumley showed that she has great comic timing as well as a superb talent for dramatic roles.
As a true AbFab fan, I have bought all of the videos and, even though i know them off by heart, I still find them Absolutely hilarious.
As were many other people, I was completely heart broken when Jennifer Saunders revealed that she was ending the show in 1995. But since then, there has been a very funny American remake that I've had chance to see called "High Society", and I highly recommend it to any other AbFab fans.
Life simply hasn't been the same, for me without AbFab, but Jennifer Saunders has apparently confirmed rumors that there is a fourth series in the works...

I'm going to review this programme in lots more detail than any of the others have done on here, because it is my 1 of my favourite shows of all time, -without posting spoilers if i can help it. Well, I have loved AbFab from the moment it started in 1992 when i was 11, and probably shouldn't of been watching it lol, i bought the Vhs's of it when they came out around 1993/94. Then later the DVD's. It's never been upgraded to bluray as of this review so far in 2024, as a lot of the shows still haven't been, due in part i suppose to evil streaming-urgh, the bain of actual TV, and what has killed Tv off frankly. Abfab needs to be put out on Bluray i think. But anyway- I loved the craziness of AbFab: -it was bright & camp, silly, and slap-stick-y, -like all good British comedies, -but also sharp, & clever writing. The premise is about 2 women trying to stay current/fashionable & relevant in an ever changing societal landscape, but doing so outrageously, and with 0 regrets as to what they say and do, whist being stuck in the 60s, and then later apparently the 70s and 80s lol -but also, it was about wanting to be loved, whilst not able to show it, as most of us do in the UK, -The daughter & mother, the mother and her mother, the best friend, the ex husbands-everyone not being able to express how they feel, so they instead are negative towards each other, just like life, to provoke a reaction. It spanned 5 series, including specials, a mini series, and a film over the course of 24 years-developed from a sketch on French & Saunders originally in 1990. Dawn French couldn't be in it, so Joanna Lumley became Jennifer Saunders new comedy duo instead, and it was magic. Eddie & Patsy are hilarious as the lead characters. And the older i get, the more i become like them-cynical, and outspoken. I love it. It is my comfort show. And the only 1 i have watched more than once. The first 2 series were unselfconscious, fast paced, and laser-focused. The third series was a bit downbeat, and started to become a bit less funny, and more self conscious. But the 2 part special in 1996 made up for this, as the 3rd series was supposed to be the end in 1995, and i felt like it was a weak ending to a great series, so the special helped finish the whole story. Of course as we know it came back in 2001, after a gap of 5 years- but i was delighted it was continuing, as i felt it has so much more to say and do as a series when it ended in 1996. I even liked the "Mirrorball" pilot, which was like a real life alternative dimension to AbFab, -apart from the characters used different names, (but i include it as Series 4 in my head). Series 4 was different, and was back to being as funny as the first 2 series were, and i enjoy it now more than i did at the time placing it against the rest of the series. The 2002 special was great, and tied up some loose ends we never got back in the 90s about the family dynamic between the mother (Edina) and the son. My favourite series is the 5th series, as Jennifer Saunders seemed to of gotten the balance right for the 5th series, and it was it's 10th anniversary too. Series 4 and 5 had more episodes with the specials too, so it was a more absorbing experience. The last special, for me, was as good as series 5, and could of ended right there. It was quite emotional, the ultimate consumers destined to live in a shop forever, themselves becoming just objects to gaze upon, because they had become surplus to requirement. (Maybe i read too much into the symbology of that end scene lol) but the whole of series 5 and this special is so funny, and subversive/surreal, i love it, i could of watched more of it. Unfortunately we had a gap again between series of 7 years this time, but we got the excellent 3 special anniversary episodes that celebrated 20 years since the first episode, and i really wished this had been a full series, because i really enjoyed it, and i was dreading it might not be good or funny after so long, but it was! I loved seeing the house change every series too, in a way, the house Edina lived in was a character in and of itself. Then in 2016, we had the film :-/ -The film is not as good as the series was, -as it didn't use the same sets as the BBC series (i.e the house) it was completely different, and it took it out of the world it revolved in, instead of it just staying mostly in the house like before. It repeated jokes from the series we had already seen, and basically was just too long. It could of done with better editing, less obnoxious incidental music, a laugh track which even though it's a film made it feel like something was missing from it, and Jennifer Saunders make up just didn't look right in the film, and i don't know why, but it bugs me everytime i watch it. I was really dissapointed. I knew the quality would drop at some point eventually. But basically it's an ok farewell with a bare bones story to 1 of my favourite series, which just wouldn't get made today, as people would probably find some reason to cancel it, even though it always poked fun at the absurdity of life, vacuous celebrity culture, and fads, and is well needed and actually essential today to put a mirror up to society to show how absurd and ridiculous it has become-somebody has got to do it-because it would have so much material of utter madness to pull from! So yes AbFab is 10/10 for me, i doubt we will see anything like it again. It no doubt inspired Sex & The City, -because AbFab came first, and i think Will & Grace is the closest programme to it, and shares a lot of it's soul and sense of humour (& also why i love that TV show too-review to follow) & probably wouldn't of been made without AbFab before it, allowing the states to push it's comedy boundaries a bit more and be more risque, less self conscious (as a lot of it's shows are), and a bit more slap stick itself. :-)

If you for some reason have not seen this amazing series you must buy it now and watch it! Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley are comic geniuses! Geniuses I say! You cannot watch this series and not fall in love with the cast and even learn to forgive Eddie and Patsy's awful behavior. Why are you still reading this review? Go now! Buy this and enjoy! You're welcome!
