I watched "Lata dwudzieste... lata trzydzieste" (The Twenties... The Thirties) for the sake of many actors whom I like who were taking part in that film. I remember that despite the not-so-good press, after the pre-premiere screenings, "The Twenties..." turned out to be the hit of the season. The film introduced viewers to the colorful world of pre-war revue theaters in Warsaw. It is another tale of Cinderella, a provincial singer who becomes a big star almost overnight. Thanks to this interesting role, Grazyna Szapolowska became one of the most popular Polish actresses. I didn't share the enthusiasm of the audience and found the plot too naive, the characters not credible, and the humor only mildly funny. But the cabaret songs were good, if someone likes that kind of entertainment. I explain the film's success among audiences by the fact that at that time people needed entertainment that would distract them from the gray everyday life of the last years of communism.
