I was born into a Christian household and had limited access to mainstream entertainment growing up in the 90s. So, a show like McGee & me was a common viewing experience. Despite it's limited reach, usually staying within a lot of church libraries, it was actually a good series. Not a really good series, but not cringe or cheap. Focus on the Family actually had a budget for it.
The series didn't have very many episodes, and only had 2 seasons, one from 1989-1990, and in 1992, in which 3 episodes were made. Each episode centers around Nicholas Martin, a young man who aspires to become an artist, and draws a character named McGee, a goofy sidekick who's there to provide guidance and moral support.
To sum the show up, it's got a lot of common elements to shows like Clarissa explains it all. Nick is the connection between the story and the audience. Throughout the show, Nick learns several lessons and morals, going through a series of adventures.
It's all available for free viewing on YouTube, and there's a secular, made for TV version of the show that removes all the religious references if you're interested.
-telling lies hurts others, especially if the lie is mistaken for the truth.
-the value of being humble and accepting that some people have certain talents you don't.
-the value of obedience and being wise when making decisions
-the value of showing love and kindness to others--no matter who they are.
-when you trust in God you never have to worry about being alone or afraid.
-jealousy causes a lot of hurt, anger, and frustration--especially for the one who's jealous.
-about the process and the payoff of making right (and wrong) decisions.
-the importance of keeping things in the right perspective and putting faith in God, not people.
-about God's love for people who are hard to love.
-about courage and where to find it.
-the importance of caring for others and "loving your neighbor as yourself".
-about making choices and hopefully discovering what's really important in the process.
The series can be ordered individually or as a set from chrbook.com or from the producers: Focus on the Family/Tyndale House.
¿Sabías que…?
- TriviaJohnny Green (Derek) was actually caught smoking a Marlboro cigarette by a Focus on the Family executive. Green was nearly fired but show producers persuaded Focus on the Family otherwise because they invested so much into the Derek Cryder character. Because of this Derek's character changes as the series progresses from evil to good.
- Citas
Phillip Monroe Jr.: Don't tell Mrs. Herman, but he's making me give the answers to the geography quiz.
Nicolas 'Nick' Martin: Figures. I guess he can't remember big words like "Ohio".
- Versiones alternativasSome prints of the VHS tapes contain a different version of the opening sequence, where the title card has a plain brown background instead of the animated purple design. Additionally, the Bible that Nick reads before the show says "The Way", while other versions say "The Bible".
