Sinopsis

  • Thakur Bhupendra Singh (Amrish Puri) is a landlord, presiding oppressively over a small Indian community. Thakur wants to construct a liquor factory in the village and wants villagers to hand over their land to him. When they resist, he kills a villager and gets his thumb print and coerces the rest to sign their land over. Lakhan is Thakur's enforcer.

One villager Mohan (Suresh Oberoi) is out of town and is unable to sign. Lakhan harasses Mohan's wife and warns her to send Mohan to the Thakur's mansion to sign the property papers upon his return. His wife (Priti Sapru) complains to the police (Anupam Kher) when he comes to the village to investigate the death of the villager. Based on the complaint, the inspector goes to Thakur to arrest him but cannot do anything without evidence. Lakhan (Kiran Kumar) goes to the village to insult the wife by parading her naked, but Bheema (Amitabh Bachchan) intervenes and saves her dignity, by beating up Lakhan and his goons.

Turns out Bheema has just returned from jail and has a history with Thakur. Police Inspector has to arrest Bheema on a complaint from Thakur, where Bheema narrates his tale.

7 years ago, Bheema says that the village was happy and prosperous. The crops were bountiful, and the people had enough to life a comfortable life. Thakur wanted to illegally and forcefully occupy all village land. To force the villagers, he had ordered Lakhan to burn all crops. His plan was to get villagers to take grain from his personal warehouses for 5 years, so that the land can be declared fallow and can be converted to industrial use.

Thakur approaches the villagers and convinces them that agriculture is a fickle business with no guaranteed income. He presents his plan to put a liquor factory on the land and offers to make farmers equal partners in the venture. He proposes that farmers stop farming, and till the time the factory is operational, he offers to give them grains from his vast warehouses.

Gauri (Jaya Prada) is Bheema's lover and confidant in the village, who is also Mohan's sister. Laxmi (Radhika) is Bheema's educated sister who is visiting him for a few days. Gauri runs a small cafe in the village.

Thakur proceeds with his plan to get the villagers completely dependent on him for their food. But Mohan and his wife defy Thakur and Mohan heads to the fields to grow his own crops. Lakhan captures Mohan and starts to torture him in front of the entire village. Only Gauri steps up to save Mohan.

Laxmi witnesses first-hand the atrocities of Thakur and Lakhan. Laxmi approaches the police to register a complaint, but the police is also being paid by Thakur. Laxmi then goes to the villagers and tries to explain that the deal they have signed with Thakur is against their own interests. Laxmi says that the contract is not in writing and alleges that Thakur has no intention of making the villagers his partners in the liquor factory. Laxmi begs the villagers to protect their land and to not fall for the false promises from Thakur. She asks villagers to start growing crops on their land again, in which case the liquor factory will never be set up.

When Thakur comes by for an inspection, Laxmi stands up to him. Lakhan picks a rifle and shoots at Laxmi, but Thakur's son Ajit brings his car in between and saves Laxmi. Ajit praises the courage displayed by Laxmi. Ajit forces Thakur to retreat. Bheema admonishes Laxmi for coming in the notice of Thakur and says that he went through many hardships to bring up Laxmi and to educate her. He does not want to see all of it go to waste over a matter that does not concern their family.

Ajit (Rishabh Shukla) approaches Laxmi and apologizes for his father's injustice. He appears as if he is going to stand up to Thakur and free the village from his shenanigans. Ajit seduces Laxmi with sweet nothings and then proposes marriage to her. Ajit even visits Bheema and admits that Thakur will never agree to the proposal between Ajit and Laxmi. So, he proposes that he will get married to Laxmi & then Thakur will have no option but to adopt Laxmi as his daughter in law.

Ajit gets Laxmi pregnant and casts her aside. Her brother Bheema goes to plead with them to accept Laxmi as their daughter-in-law and they reject his pleas and have him thrown out. Bheema tries to avenge this humiliation, only to be rebuffed. Laxmi goes to Thakur's mansion, only to hear Thakur & Ajit discuss how they will eliminate the child who could pose issues later. Laxmi runs away but is stabbed by Ajit & Thakur. Ajit is stabbed by Bheema, but Laxmi dies giving birth to a son, who is later named Kanhaiya (Baby Guddu). Bheema is jailed for 7 years handing his nephew over to Gauri, the love of his life.

Bheema is imprisoned, and after his sentence is over, he returns to his community. He promptly takes up arms against Thakur and gives an open challenge to his authority. Thakur responds by increasing his atrocities over the villagers & asking them to evict Bheema from the village in return for clemency.

Bheema is told that he can no longer reside in the village, as the entire community is terrified of the Thakur and his men. Bheema then decides to move out of town. Some villagers and police officer (Anupam Kher) persuade Bheema to return, and he agrees. Bheema takes advantage of a party at Thakur's house to steal all the property papers that Thakur has accumulated forcefully over the years & sets fire to them.

In retaliation, Bheema's nephew Kanhaiya is abducted by Thakur and his men, and he will only be returned after Bheema obtains signatures/thumb prints from everyone in the community, thereby turning over their properties to Thakur's name.

Bheema attacks Thakur's mansion and rescues Kanhaiya. Then he captures Thakur and drag him on foot to the village, where he is burned alive by the villagers.
