This was the final film directed by Franklin J. Schaffner before his death on July 2, 1989 at the age of 69. He died more than two months before it was released.
Second appearance of Kris Kristofferson and Sam Waterston on a same film nine years after their previous encounter in La puerta del cielo (1980).
Some scenes were filmed in a former military hospital in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The movie is referenced in The Tragically Hip's " Blow At High Dough"- "They shot a movie once In my hometown Everybody was in it From miles around..."
Much of the movie was filmed in Orillia, Ontario, hometown of Kristofferson's good friend, singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot who had recorded Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee" in 1970. Kristofferson performed the song with Lightfoot at Casino Rama in 2016.
