In his biography, Christopher Reeve claims this film's failure, along with Superman IV, en busca de la paz (1987), The Aviator (1985), and Street Smart (1987), knocked him off the A-list in Hollywood and he would have to audition for major roles for the rest of his career.
Christopher Reeve and Burt Reynolds both were considered for the lead in Mujer bonita (1990) two years later. Reeve chose not to do it after he felt his audition was unprofessionally done, and Reynolds was offered but turned the role down.
Christopher Reeve apparently regretted making this movie. One of the main reasons he signed on was because Michael Caine originally was lined up to play Sullivan, and had enjoyed working with him in Trampa mortal (1982), but was out of the project after Reeve signed on. He also said that he took the project on because he was suffering post-divorce depression and believed that he had "made a fool of himself" in the film.
In a 2018 interview with David Marchese for the website Vulture, Kathleen Turner said quite frankly that working with Burt Reynolds on this movie was a very negative and divisive experience and that Reynolds made her cry on the first day of shooting by complaining that he refused to take second place to a woman.
Reportedly, Burt Reynolds and Kathleen Turner constantly fought during the filming of this movie. Christopher Reeve had to mediate between them.
