Mr. North, a stranger to a small, but wealthy, Rhode Island town, quickly has rumors started about him that he has the power to heal people's ailments. The rumors are magnified by his tendency to collect negative charges and give shocks to anyone he touches. In his adventures he befriends an old man who is a shut-in and helps him rediscover the world.

Movie nice, book much better

I loved the choice of actors, the acting itself, the art direction, costuming and most everything about this film...BUT the screenplay. I read the book and remember it as a lively, interesting fast-paced read, but the movie stays lugged down, even despite the best efforts of the actors involved. I was pleased to watch it though, I was, but couldn't help but make the same comparison most do when watching a film adaptation of a favorite book...it couldn't help but pale in contrast. Anthony Edwards did his best, and it was charming, that was worth watching. Lauren Bacall, Mary Stuart Masterson, Virginia Madsen, Anjelica Huston...all so lovely to watch. I think even if I had not read the book I would have found the film sluggish, but it was sweet to watch.

John Huston, who had long suffered from emphysema, personally asked Robert Mitchum to take his part in this film after he was hospitalized with pneumonia. Mitchum filmed the role during a break from Remembranzas de guerra (1988).

Errores
The Cole Porter song "You Do Something to Me" was prominently featured at the end of the film, including being played and sung by the band at the ball. The film was set in 1926, but Cole Porter did not publish this song until 1929.
