This is the US tv version of the British sitcom of the same name, which ran on the BBC from 1986-1987 for two series and 14 episodes. Several of the main characters have the same first names in both versions.

This is the first of 3 series for Jere Burns where his character is a member of a mental health group, the second being Help Me Help You (2006). The third is Breaking Bad (2008); he appears as a facilitator of group therapy Jesse Pinkman is part of.

The exterior of the Rego Park Community Center is a facade on the rebuilt Paramount backlot, and was one of the first facades constructed after the 1983 fire that destroyed most of the old backlot. This facade is along the wall of Stage 15, which also sustained minor damage by the fire.

MAD Magazine did a spoof in their July 1989 issue called "Deary John".
