The Case of Mr. Spalt has a 10-year long production history. René Perraudin made his film over the years, firstly in the form of five separate short films. They were all made from the very beginning with the full-length film in mind, each starring Otto Sander, and the background story linking the episodes together into a complete film with one storyline was added last.
