Originally released in 1974, Death Wish is now streaming on Paramount+. Directed by Michael Winner and written by Wendell Mayes, the film starred Bronson as Paul Kersey, a mild-mannered middle-aged family man living in Manhattan. When his wife and daughter are brutally attacked by thugs, resulting in the death of the former, Paul becomes frustrated with the police department's lack of justice. The actor is undoubtedly best-known by fans of John Carpenters classic slasher flick, Halloween (1978), as the venerable Sheriff Leigh Bracket, starring along with Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis. Brackett helps Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasence) hunt for the Shape, aka Michael Myers (Nick Castle), the night the serial killer came home over 45 years ago. Cyphers manager, Chris Roe, revealed that the Halloween actor and Hollywood stalwart passed away after battling a brief illness (per Variety). Roe said:

Variety reports that Cyphers passed away “from a brief illness in Tucson, Arizona, on Sunday.”

Chris Roe Management said in a statement to Variety, “Charles was a lovable and sensitive man. He always had the best stories, and you got a full performance while he told you. He was a close friend and client on many years who will be dearly missed.”

Writer/director Ti West has been one of horror’s most compelling, original voices since his 2005 debut “The Roost,” but with his last three movies, his filmmaking skills have risen to a whole new level. When director Michael Winner and screenwriter Wendell Mayes adapted Brian Garfield's novel "Death Wish," it's doubtful that they had any idea they'd be launching a film franchise that would change the landscape of vigilante thrillers forever, and solidify Charles Bronson as one of the greatest stars of action cinema. The "Death Wish" films start out as a twisted character study of a man named Paul Kersey as he slowly descends into a life of vengeance and violence, bearing arms and serving as a one-man judge, jury, and executioner. There's a real allure to righting wrongs outside of the American justice system, but as Kearsey's arc shows, his desire to kill has perhaps always been a part of him -- which makes him part of the problem.

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.

August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.

Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

‘Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty’ Season 2 Premiere | Aug.

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.

Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Prime Video is hoping to launch its own extended franchise universe in April with the premiere of international spy series “Citadel” from the minds of the Russo Brothers. The show stars Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra, and Stanley Tucci, and is intended to be the first block of an interconnected story with different spinoffs in countries and regions around the world. The first version will begin streaming on April 28. In the show, the world is in the grips of Manticore, a criminal organization, and several former spies are recruited to restore order despite having their memories erased.

Time for another curiosity review, of a grindhouse gut-basher from the 1970s — a subgenre I avoided when new.

Eli Roth's remake of Death Wish has added yet another veteran actor to its cast. Comedian Mike Epps has joined the movie as Dr. Chris Salgadoa, a friend to Bruce Willis, who is playing Paul Kersey, the lead in the movie. It seems as though he will be playing a character that didn't appear in the original 1974 Death Wish movie.

Deadline broke the news that Mike Epps will be joining the remake, which appears to be getting closer to production as they have recently added a lot more talent to the cast. Actor Bruce Willis, will star in a remake of "Death Wish", to be directed by Aharon Keshales & Navot Papushado, rebooting director Michael Winner's 1974 vigilante action feature:

The original Paramount Pictures thriller was loosely based on the novel "Death Wish" by author Brian Garfield, following former WWII and Korean war vet, 'Paul Kersey'.

Kersey, a 'liberal' thinking architect, becomes an unstoppable late-night vigilante killer, targeting muggers, after a deadly assault against his wife and daughter pushes him over the deep end.

At the time of its initial release, critics were displeased with the film, considering it an 'immoral threat to society' and an encouragement of 'antisocial behavior'.

Despite the negative reviews, producers sensed the 'primal' appeal of the premise with audiences and released five "Death Wish" films.

Earlier this year, Eli Roth signed onto, then quickly departed, the long anticipated big screen adaptation of Meg. Upon exiting the giant killer shark movie, the acclaimed horror director wasn't quick to tell the world what he was doing next instead. Now we have an answer. The man behind the Hostel franchise is going to reboot Death Wish with Bruce Willis already confirmed for the lead role of Paul Kersey.

Death Wish follows nice a mild-mannered liberal, New York City architect Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson), who snaps after intruders break into his home, murdering his wife (Hope Lange) and violently raping his daughter. A business trip to Tucson, Ariz., lands him a gift from a client, a revolver he uses to patrol the streets when he returns home. Frustrated that the police cannot find the intruders, he become a vigilante, gunning down any criminal that crosses his path. The public finds this vigilantism heroic.

Cannon Films, the iconic independent film studio of the 1970s and 1980s which essentially continued the careers of the likes of Charles Bronson and Chuck Norris through and after their prime, are back - more than twenty years after shutting their doors.

Responsible for the likes of "Masters of the Universe," "Cyborg," "Breakin'," "Cobra," "Lifeforce," "Invasion U.S.A.," "American Ninja," "Death Wish II," and "Bloodsport," the studio is now back with a new slate of movies is on the horizon.

Formed under the new hand of Richard Albiston, Cannon Films Ltd. was established in 2014 and is moving forward with the ideals of former chairman Menahem Golan about putting the artist first. Today comes word of eight films which mark their inaugral slate - "America Ninja Apprentice," "Return of The Delta Force," "U.S. Sniper," "Allan Quatermain and the Jewel of the East," "Curse," "Zombi: They Live," "Writer's Block" and "The Leopard Hunts at Midnight".

Cannon Films was a giant in the 1970s and 80s. Anyone who grew up in that era has Cannon Films running through their DNA with such cult classics as Masters of the Universe, Cyborg, Revenge of the Ninja, American Ninja, Death Wish II, Bloodsport and so much more.

In 2012, Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films documented the rise and fall of Cannon Films (which you can see on Netflix right now). Electric Boogaloo was the name of the wacky 1985 sequel to the break dance epic Breakin’ – which I don’t know was worthy of a follow-up but if there was one studio up to the effort in the mid-‘80s, it was Cannon Films. Electric Boogaloo: The Wild Untold Story Of Cannon Films is the title of a new documentary that plays for one night only in St. Louis at Landmark’s The Tivoli Theater Thursday, September 17th at 7pm.

We are honestly proud to bring the Golan-Globus epic, the flagship of Cannon Films, Death Wish 3 for its 30th anniversary. I’ve been wanting to show this film for some time now and lord knows people have demanded it (namely Jeremy Jones, who contributes to Dtb). If you haven’t seen any or the previous Death Wish films, you’ll be fine. There's nothing particularly special about Hilla Medalia's documentary, "The Go-Go Boys: The Inside Story of Cannon Films," other than its subjects, Menahem Golan and Yorum Globus. Menahem Golan, the Israeli producer and director whose body of work includes “The Delta Force,” “Death Wish II” and “Masters of the Universe,” died Friday, Haaretz reports. He was 85. Born Menahem Globus in 1929, Golan traveled to New York to study film at New York University in 1960, arriving in Hollywood in the 1970s.
