    Although the screenplay was written by Japanese screen-writing partners Akira Kurosawa, Hideo Oguni, and Masato Ide, Ran was actually inspired by William Shakespeare's tragedy King Lear and is based on legends of the daimyō Mori Motonari.



    The jest was considered offensive because it was in reference to the two other warlords that were present during the boar hunt. Saburo implied that the two warlords were just like rabbits who had come to be eaten by Hidetora, the father.
