New Line Cinema originally didn't ask Robert Englund to return as Freddy Krueger and refused to give him a pay raise. A stuntman was cast as Freddy at the start of production. After two weeks of filming, Robert Shaye realized this was a terrible lapse in judgment, fired the stuntman, hired Englund, and met his demands.
The unknown stunts performer had a physique totally dissimilar to Englund's (with a particularly thick neck); Nevertheless he still makes an appearance in the finished film. Englund confirmed the entire sequence in the locker room showers, with the gym coach (Marshall Bell), was never re-shot - still features the "stuntman-Freddy."

The only "Nightmare" film in which the lead character is male.
The original glove from Pesadilla en la calle del infierno (1984) was used in this movie and was also seen hanging on the wall of the work shed in El despertar del diablo 2 (1987). This was in response to the use of El Despertar del Diablo (1981) on a television screen in Pesadilla en la calle del infierno (1984), and part of a continued banter between directors Wes Craven and Sam Raimi. However, when Wes Craven loaned the glove to the Pesadilla en la calle del infierno 3, los guerreros del sueño (1987) set, it was lost but eventually found by a Freddy fan, Mike Becker, at an auction in 2009.
