Sinopsis

  • Streetwise and poor, Amar Nath (Amitabh Bachchan) makes a living selling cinema tickets and fast-food snacks (Bhel Puri) outside cinema halls. Amar comes into conflict with Bhupath (Ranjeet) who is the local don, as Amar's business has stopped Bhupath's business of selling cinema tickets at inflated prices. Amar gets into a fight with Bhupath, when he comes to harass his adoptive mother and sister Anu. Amar was orphaned at a young age after the death of his mother (Nirupa Roy).

Amar is educated & talented but is struggling to find a job due to the ills of nepotism. He is taken under the wing of a politician and Chair of the "Garibon Ki Party', Shankar Narayan (Kader Khan). Shankar is attacked by opposition party goons during a rally & Amar intervenes & protects Shankar & his senior leaders. Shankar pretends to be moved by Amar's plight. Amar is allowed to join the Police Academy and returns as a Police Inspector. Amar feels indebted to Shankar & goes to meet him before his first day on duty. He falls in love and gets married to Asha (Sridevi), the only daughter of multi-millionaire businessman, Sitaram (Utpal Dutt). Amar had saved Asha from sexual assault after she had refused advances of an MP's son who was trying to get fresh with her. Sitaram is Shankar's senior colleague in the party.

When he successfully apprehends and kills a terrorist by the name of Anil Raj (Tiger Prabhakar). Anil was contracted by Shankar & Sitaram to create chaos & insecurity in the state with random & brutal acts of terrorism. Victor Jairaj (T. P. Jain) was the intermediary between Shankar and Anil Raj. Shankar & Sitaram wanted to take advantage of this chaos to project themselves & their party as a viable alternative to the current government who would look incompetent and useless due to these terrorist attacks. The whole plan is funded by money from Sitaram's business activities. Amar had arrested one member of the Anil gang & he under torture, he ends up disclosing Anil as the main perpetrator behind the terrorist attacks. Anil threatens Shankar to disclose everything to the police if he was not provided safe passage out of India. So, Shankar calls up Amar & provides him Anil's location & asks him to finish Anil. Anil dies in the resultant skirmish.

Amar is promoted By Police Commissioner (Iftekar) as the Assistant Commissioner of Police. Asa gets married to Amar. Sitaram is dead against the marriage as he does not believe that Amar has a high enough social stature. But Shankar convinces Sitaram that he should not oppose the match, as this way they can control Amar even more. Asha shares his joy, and soon both are informed that they will soon be proud parents. Then Amar is briefed about the activities of smuggler by the name of Koya Koya Atachi (Shakti Kapoor) by IG of Delhi police Shamsher Singh (Jagdish Raj). Sitaram had tricked Amar into delivering a package to Koya & he was photographed in the company of Koya. At that time Amar did not know that Koya was an international smuggler.

When Amar confronts Sitaram, Shankar comes to his defense & explains to Amar that both Sitaram & Shankar had supported Amar so that he could be of use to them one day. Shankar also admits that Anil was working under his directions. Shankar threatens to publish Amar's photo with Koya in the papers if Amar decides to take any action against them. Under duress, & with no other option, Amar decides to join Shankar & Sitaram in their game.

Shamsher finds out from an inspector who saw Amar, that he handed a briefcase to Koya. The news reaches Police Commissioner, who deputes Inspector Pratap (Shafi Inamdar) to investigate the case. Sitaram orders Amar to help Koya escape India & also to take possession of Rs 27 Crores worth of diamonds from him. Amar helps Koya escape (while evading Pratap, who was looking to arrest Amar with Koya) the police dragnet, & when he gets possession of the diamonds, he kills Koya & his accomplice. When Sitaram comes to Amar's house to recover the diamonds, he & Amar are forced to explain the truth to Asha. This was because Pratap came with a search warrant for Amar's house to look for the diamonds. But Pratap was not able to find the diamonds, as Amar had hidden them inside the plaster of his injured arm. Amar admits that he has been helping Sitaram & Shankar in their illegal activities due to their threat of exposing his supposed relation with Koya. Amar resigns from the Police department, so he cannot be forced to betray his country anymore.

Amar gets immensely popular with the public for his selflessness, so much so that Shankar Narayan resigns and asks Amar to be the Chair of the political party, which Amar accepts.

It is then that pregnant Asha finds out that Amar is not who he claims to be but is a pawn in the hands of skilled politicians - who have been using him as their hit-man, and now are ready to use him as the Chief Minister so that they can carry on with their nefarious activities. Asha does not allow Amar or her father to meet the kid.

Shankar teaches Amar the ropes of politics, including how to convert illegal money into legal, via donations. Shankar sets fire to slums and gets Amar to carry out relief work the very next day.

Under Amar's leadership, Shankar's party wins the elections & install Amar as chief minister. In his first cabinet meeting Amar proceeds to kill each & every cabinet minister with a machine gun to eliminate the corruption from its roots.
