This film is dedicated to King Vidor who had passed away in 1982 which was the year before 'The Young Warriors' (1983) debuted. The picture's dedication during the opening credits reads: '"This film is dedicated to King Vidor with deepest appreciation for his invaluable creative assistance." Producer Victoria Paige Meyerink had been an assistant to Vidor on the short documentary 'The Metaphor' (1980).

The movie was a sequel of sorts to 'Malibu High' (1979) which had been made and first released about four years earlier.
The movie had two working titles. These were ''Malibu High II'' and ''The Graduates of Malibu High'' with the final title being settled upon as being ''Young Warriors''. The picture's precursor, 'Malibu High' (1979), was originally titled 'Lovely But Deadly' but it got re-titled 'Malibu High' by production house Crown International Pictures.
Lawrence David Foldes is the only cast or crew member of both 'Malibu High' (1979) and its sequel 'Young Warriors' (1983) to have worked on both pictures. Foldes was a producer on both pictures and a writer and the director on this follow-up.
