This film was the brainchild of Alexis Kanner. He and Patrick McGoohan met via Kanner's performance in an episode of McGoohan's popular British television show El prisionero (1967). Kanner worked on the idea and polished it for a few years before finally calling up McGoohan to ask him to star in the film.
Alexis Kanner sued the makers of Duro de matar (1988), claiming that they stole the idea for that movie from this film. He lost.

The film was played at the London Film Festival in 1984. This engagement was followed by a special Six of One reception at the London ICA. Six of One is an association for fans of the TV show El prisionero (1967).
The film received a very scattered release (Canada in 1981, England in 1984, the U.S. in 1989). Its most successful run was its 1984 showing in London. It premiered there at the London Film Festival and was heralded by a few London-based critics.
