Although I remember a few "racist" accusations because the gennie was black this show was so much fun. I loved this show when I was 7 and was upset by it's cancellation. All I remember is the friendship between the lead male and the genie. It taught me a bit about friendship. I miss this show and it always will be a great reminder of my childhood.
I remember the NAACP threatening to boycott the network if they continued to air this garbage. There was such a lack of diversity on TV at the time and the thought of a grown black man calling a white man "master" was just too much for many African Americans. I remember T K Carter responding to the cancellation of the show and the uproar by the NAACP over the shows controversy theme. He stated "nobody asked me how I felt". He seemed hurt that no one, especially a black organization, didn't bother to ask his opinion. But critics agreed the show was unfunny and juvenile at best. It could have possible worked on Saturday morning TV if the network had casted a white actor in the genie role. The earlier poster stated he was 7 at the time of the airing of this show. You would have had to have the mindset of a 7 year old to have like this show.
This was yet another great sitcom that was unforunately "lost" through the years and most likely doesn't even exist in anyone's tape collections anymore.
I remember one episode where the family wished Shabu to give them all a credit card that they can use to get anyhting at stores for free...they wound up getting so much free stuff that it filled the rooms in their house up, so they wound up wishing everything never happened.

Very cool TV series that was popular in England. Well in my part of England any way. Can anyone help me get this TV series on DVD?? (Region 2 format)
I loved the character Shabu, he was so cool. Also his owner - Hamilton Camp - was cool as well. He was the perfect foil to the sure of himself genie -Shabu. How I would love to own a genie like "Shabu"
Reminds me of, "I dream of Genie" from the 1960's, but with a Eddie Murphy, or Richard Prior style genie as the "Genie" this time - and a 1980's setting instead.
I would truly love it if I could see the whole series again. Or if someone could do a film of this series. It was brilliant.
Or even revamp the series using a modern setting? Is this possible?
Are you listening Hollywood producers. I wished I worked at Hollywood. I know what people want. And a re-working of this would work. It really would.

- TriviaAssailed by many civil rights groups for it's characterization of a black as a thankful servant to a white, the NAACP announced in October of 1983 of winning changes to the content, including no more usage of the words "master" and "servant" on the show and less "jive talk" from the genie Shabu.
