The Other Side of the Mountain

  • [Reflecting on her life after the loss of her fiance]
  • Jill Kinmont: I try not to let it, but sometimes it all plays back in my mind, and when it does, I remember the words that Dick Buek said to me the last time I saw him: "How lucky I am to have found someone and something that saying goodbye to is so damned awful."
  • Jill Kinmont: Okay, that's enough!
  • Dick 'Mad Dog' Buek: No, that's not enough! 'Cause I'm going to stick around here until you shape up, you understand that? I don't care if you can't ski! I don't care if you can't walk! I don't care if you crawl around like a damn lizard. You're not getting any sympathy from me.
  • Audra Jo Nicholson: [Jill and Audra Jo watch skiers from their wheelchairs] What are you thinking?
  • Jill Kinmont: How damn lucky I am.
  • Jill Kinmont: I think the hardest time is waking up in the morning... those moments before I remember who I am, and think instead about who I was.
  • Jill Kinmont: [Jill laboriously picks up a potato chip from a bowl on her lap] Didn't even break. That's the hardest thing of all.
  • Buddy Werner: Jill, aren't you gonna walk?
  • Jill Kinmont: Walk?
  • Buddy Werner: Yeah, I, I thought you were...
  • Jill Kinmont: No. I'm never gonna walk.
  • Jill Kinmont: I began to wonder if maybe I'm one of those people that's just born lucky or if I'm just using up all my luck at once.
  • [Immediately following her accident, Jill's ambulance encounters a bad traffic jam on the way to the hospital]
  • Dave McCoy: Driver, how long do you think it'll be?
  • Ambulance Driver: Looks like it's backed up for miles. It could take hours.
  • Ambulance Attendant: She won't make it!
  • Jill Kinmont: Dave? Uh- I'm not gonna die!
  • Dave McCoy: [to ambulance attendant] Now you listen to me. This is Jill Kinmont, and she's not gonna die. You understand that?
  • Dr. Pittman: There's been a fracture/dislocation of the spinal column at the level of C5. In plain talk... it means her neck's broken, the spinal cord... completely severed,
  • June Kinmont: Will it heal?
  • Dr. Pittman: It'll *fuse*, but that's not the same as healing.
  • June Kinmont: What is the...
  • Dr. Pittman: The prognosis?
  • June Kinmont: Yes.
  • Dr. Pittman: Well, at this point, it's a matter of guesswork. We'll have to wait for her to tell us. In the meantime, all we can do is wait, and hope.
  • June Kinmont: Hope that she'll walk?
  • Dr. Pittman: [shakes head imperceptibly] That she'll *live*.
  • Dave McCoy: Now you can win the race. You gotta win it, alright? Just be smooth and use your head. Hang onto that mountain, alright?
  • Jill Kinmont: [waking up after her accident] My head... what's in my head?
  • Nurse: It's the traction.
  • Buddy Werner: Jill... you're gonna be all right, Jill. Do you understand?
  • Jill Kinmont: Don't see me like this.
  • Nurse: Shhh... sleep Jill... just close your eyes and sleep
  • Jill Kinmont: If I sleep, I'll never wake up.
  • Buddy Werner: Your gonna come out of it Jill. You go to.
  • Jill Kinmont: Help me... stay awake, Buddy. Help me... stay awake.
  • Head of Ski Patrol: [Reaching Jill after her accident] Where does it hurt, Jill?
  • Jill Kinmont: [weakly] Cant.. feel... anything...
  • Head of Ski Patrol: Can you feel your toes at all?
  • Jill Kinmont: No...
  • Dave McCoy: Jill? it's Dave.
  • Head of Ski Patrol: We'll take care of her.
  • Dave McCoy: All right Jill, listen to me now. Just take it easy, these people are gonna take care of you, all right? I'm gonna go down to the bottom, I'll see you in a little while. Okay?
  • [Jill meets Dick for the first time after she falls during a race]
  • Dick 'Mad Dog' Buek: Beautiful! Want me to take your picture?
  • Jill Kinmont: I bit my tongue.
  • Dick 'Mad Dog' Buek: Shouldn't stick it out while you're racing. Wanna know why you burned?
  • Jill Kinmont: My *coach* will tell me, thank you.
  • Dick 'Mad Dog' Buek: Skiing is gravity. Much more powerful than you are. Less you fight it the faster you go
  • Jill Kinmont: Do I know you?
  • Dick 'Mad Dog' Buek: Nope. Get up!
  • Jill Kinmont: [seeing the initials 'M D' on his sweater] What are you, a doctor or something?
  • Dick 'Mad Dog' Buek: No. Now keep you hands out in front of you, huh?
  • Jill Kinmont: What does M D stand for?
  • Dick 'Mad Dog' Buek: That's my name. Just- just- crouch down see, and stay loose! Now gravity works through the hinges...
  • Jill Kinmont: Mike! Your name's Mike...
  • Dick 'Mad Dog' Buek: Hinges! Ankles, knees, butt...
  • Jill Kinmont: Melvin!
  • Dick 'Mad Dog' Buek: elbows...
  • Jill Kinmont: Martin!
  • Dick 'Mad Dog' Buek: STICK YOUR BUTT OUT! You butt's the wheel! Make yourself like a boat!
  • Jill Kinmont: Um...
  • Dick 'Mad Dog' Buek: Hey, you wanna learn to ski or not?
  • Jill Kinmont: Look, I'm sorry. I don't take skiing lessons from just anybody.
  • Dick 'Mad Dog' Buek: Oh.
  • [they both remove their large tinted goggles, revealing their faces]
  • Jill Kinmont: I'm Jill Kinmont and I just happen to be the best ski- Oh my god, you're Mad Dog Buek!
