D’Wayne Wiggins, the singer, guitarist, and co-founder of Tony! Toni! Toné!, died Friday, March 7. He was 64.

Wiggins’ family confirmed his death in a statement, saying he died Friday morning “surrounded by friends and loved ones.” They said, for the past year, Wiggins had been “privately and courageously battling bladder cancer,” adding, “Through this fight, he remained committed and present for his family, his music, his fans and his community.”

D’Wayne Wiggins, a founding member of the hitmaking R&b trio Tony! Toni! Toné!, died Friday of cancer at his home in Oakland, CA. He was 64.

His family confirmed the news in an Instagram post, writing: “With broken hearts, we share with you that our beloved D’Wayne passed away this morning surrounded by family and loved ones. Over the past year, he has been privately and courageously battling bladder cancer. Through this fight, he remained committed and present for his family, his music, his fans and his community.”

Born on February 14, 1961, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Wiggins started Tony! Toni! Toné! in 1986 with his younger brother Raphael Saddiq — né Charles Ray Wiggins — and their cousin Timothy Christian in Oakland. Fatih Akin’s WWII coming-of-age tale Amrum has begun shooting in Hamburg with newcomer Jasper Billerbeck joining German stars Laura Tonke and Diane Kruger in the cast.

The feature, which was first announced in 2022, is set on Germany’s North Sea island of Amrum in the spring of 1945, in the final days of World War Two.

It revolves around a 12-year-old boy called Nanning who goes seal hunting, fishing at night and toils in the fields to help his mother feed the family. When peace is declared, completely new conflicts arise, and Nanning must learn to find his own way.

The screenplay is based on the childhood memories of German director and screenwriter Hark Bohm, a long-standing friend of Akin.

The pair previously collaborated on the screenplay of Turkish-German director Akin’s award-winning 2017 feature In The Fade.
