Alberto De Martino’s The Antichrist is easy to dismiss as a shameless rip-off of The Exorcist. But that would be to diminish the stylistic verve that De Martino brings to the project. In fact, aside from the more overt story elements relating to the occult, De Martino’s direction owes more to other Euro contemporaries like Walerian Borowczyk and Sergio Martino than to William Friedkin.

Densely plotted, if overlong, The Antichrist proves more enamored with matters of sexual repression than demonic possession. As the film opens, Ippolita (Carla Gravina) attends a madhouse religious ceremony—featuring snakes, writhing bodies, and a possessed man (Ernesto Colli) who hurls himself from a cliff to his death—alongside her aristocratic father (Mel Ferrer), in an effort to try and walk again. Sanguis bibimus! Corpus edimus! In a partnership between Mutant, Hollywood Records, and 20th Century Films, the haunting soundtrack to "The First Omen" can soon be yours on vinyl. The prequel to Richard Donner's 1976 masterpiece, director Arkashsa Stevenson's most excellent "The First Omen" is the rare example of a legacy film done right, and what /Film's Witney Seibold described in his review, as "a film of dank, bloody, spittle-flecked dread, made no less powerful by the foregone conclusion." Donner's original film shocked audiences upon release and is believed to this day to be a cursed film, but Stevenson's prequel film had to fight with the MPA to avoid an Nc-17 rating, so the franchise tradition of scaring the squares is alive and well.

Slayer’s classic 1983 debut album, Show No Mercy, is set to receive a 40th anniversary edition vinyl reissue via Metal Blade.

The reissue arrives February 9th in two configurations. The first is a “deluxe-edition” style set featuring a slipcase that houses the LP on “Gold Black Dust” colored vinyl, a turntable slipmat, poster, replica show flyers, and a signing card. It retails for $64.99.

Alternatively, hardcore Slayer fans might be tempted by the extremely limited “Blood Filled” liquid vinyl variant. Limited to 250 copies worldwide, the LP itself is a wonder to behold, as it appears to be actually filled with blood. It would appear the vinyl required a costly production process, as this edition — which does not include the aforementioned ephemera in the standard “deluxe” version — will set you back $199.99 (though the record is sure to become a collectible).

The movie is the sixth entry in the franchise and follows two young girls exhibiting signs of possession. Green compares The Exorcist with his Halloween trilogy, stating that it is more researched and academic, aiming to preserve the original's dramatic integrity.

Leland experiences a new kind of horror in Evil season 4 say showrunners Robert and Michelle King. Evil season 3 ended on one of the Paramount+ show’s signature crazy cliffhangers, as the ever-scheming Leland (Michael Emerson) was revealed to have gotten Kristen’s (Katja Herbers) missing egg from the fertility clinic and implanted it in a surrogate, in hopes of bringing about the antichrist. Evil season 4 will now pick up right after the events of season 3, with Leland having to take care of his new potentially demonic bundle of joy, while Kristen deals with her own ongoing messy home life.

Mess will indeed be big theme throughout Evil season 4, as showrunners the Kings told EW about what’s in store for Leland as he tries to hatch his evil plans. There won’t necessarily be any big supernatural drama for Leland however, as the bad guy learns all about the more mundane horrors of fatherhood.

Competition line-up includes new films by Jerzy Sladkowski, Bryan Fogel, Moara Passoni and Hubert Sauper.

Michael Moriarty has long stood on the precipice of the mainstream; teetering, looking in, a toe here, but always bringing his unique Moriarty-ness to every project. Never one to shy away from speaking his mind, he brings the same fearlessness to his art, often resulting in performances just left (and sometimes further) of center. So it goes for another genre jaunt, Blood Link (1982), in which he plays formerly conjoined twins who collide in a mélange of murder and deception, giallo style.

This German-Italian-u.S. co-production premiered in the U.K. in October, with a rollout Stateside in November; oddly, it didn’t debut in Italy until ’86 and Germany in ’87. Perhaps the distributors didn’t have enough faith in their product, or they found its old fashioned story to be out of step with modern slashers. A man chasing himself is a hard sell, after all.

A U.S. Christian group has put together a petition calling for the cancellation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s “Good Omens” — unfortunately, the letter is addressed to Netflix and the show is produced by Amazon Prime. The letter, which has already amassed 20,000 signatures, contends that the series is “another step to make satanism appear normal, light and acceptable,” and takes issue with God being voiced by a woman. (God is played by the incomparable Frances McDormand.)

After a quiet day of releases last Tuesday, we have a ton of horror and sci-fi home media offerings on the docket for this week, including one of my favorite films of the year, Happy Death Day 2 U. Criterion has put together a new edition of the original Funny Games that fans will undoubtedly want to add to their collections, and Mill Creek Entertainment is bringing both Ghosts of Mars and the Eyes of Laura Mars to Blu-ray for the first time as well.

Scream Factory will be unleashing The Chosen this week, and Intervision is resurrecting the underground horror/wrestling mashup Masked Mutilator in what looks to be an ultimate celebration of the cult film. Mondo Macabro is keeping busy with their release of the gothic sexiness of The Devil’s Nightmare, and for those of you who love to indulge in Wtf-ery filmmaking, Saint Bernard from Gabe Bartalos is not to be missed.

What's new is always old, and in this recurring column, I'll be taking a look at the classic genre movies that have influenced today's new releases. In honor of the demonic-possession horror film The Devil Inside, this week it's Alberto De Martino's 1974 Italian Exorcist rip-off The Antichrist.

Part of the wave of cheap copycats that flooded international cinemas in the wake of William Friedkin's 1973 classic The Exorcist, Alberto De Martino's The Antichrist (a/k/a L'anticristo, though released domestically in 1974 under the lamer moniker The Tempter) makes no bones about its plagiaristic inclinations.
