Continuity

In the final scenes where Sheriff Pusser drives a police car to the Lucky Spot, just before he arrives, in the long shot of him driving down the highway, the patrol car has red lights on it's roof. When he arrives and drives the car through the bar, the car has blue lights.
When the townspeople arrive at the house and Buford comes down the stairs, the stairs are on the left-hand side. When he opens the door, the stairs are on the right.
From the very first moment Buford's big stick appears it has the bark carved off. In the final scene where he has it in hand, it has the bark still on it.
At the beginning of the movie, when Buford returns to his parents' home, his station wagon is faded and has gray Bondo on the driver's side door. Very soon after, the same car is like new physically. There was never any mention of any bodywork being done.
When Buford and Pauline are ambushed, and he pulls her out of the car, all the windows are down. When the deputies, and ambulances arrive, the right rear window is up.

Factual errors

After Buford was attacked at the Lucky Spot, Pauline says that Buford was in the Marines for three years. In actuality, Buford Pusser was discharged during recruit training because of asthma.
Tennessee does not require a front license plate as seen though out much of the movie. Also the format with numbers and letters is not accurate.

Revealing mistakes

When bartender Bozo and Margie Ann pick up the unconscious drunk outside The Lucky Spot, the drunk pushes off slightly with his right leg to help out with the lift.
When Buford goes into the Lucky Spot with his stick and begins to hit the men, it is obvious that he is not using a stick to hit them with because it is flexible. It appears to be made of foam. In non-contact shots in the scene it is a real stick.
During the assault on Buford's car, his car sustains numerous stray bullet holes, yet miraculously, not one hits the windshield or windows.
When Sheriff Thurman and his deputy are chasing Pusser in his truck only the sheriff and the deputy are seen in the car from the front camera shots. But as they get close the bridge, in the rear camera shots, three people are seen in the car or at least two people and some large object in the back seat.
When Buford confronts the bar thugs with his stick, he hits the switchblade carrying thug with it full force in the arm. He then hits that thug in the mouth with the stick. The thug reaches up with the arm Buford hit and cradles his bloody jaw. This is highly unlikely as that the bones in his arm would likely be shattered.

Anachronisms

The drive-by ambush on Buford Pusser and his wife near the end of the film occurred on August 12, 1967. Many of the police cars used in the movie, including the one Pusser has, are 1972 Dodge Polaras.

Crew or equipment visible

When Buford is "busting up a still", there is a crew member crouched down beside the car.
When Pusser is in the morgue you can clearly see a boom coming in from off screen. Then in the next scene outside you again can clearly see a microphone poking up from below.
The shadow of the boom mic moving on the wall behind Buford in Judge Clarke's chambers when they are discussing the assault on Obra.

Plot holes

Boom mic visible

There are numerous instances of boom mic visibility are only found in Full Screen or Pan & Scan versions such as VHS and Rhino's DVD release. (The most recent Paramount DVD presents the film in its proper matted Widescreen format, eliminating the boom mic visibility errors.)
When Buford is in the Judge's chambers talking to the Judge you can clearly see the shadow of the boom mic visible on the wall behind him.
When Sheriff Pusser addresses his deputies for the first time outside of the Sheriff's station, there is a boom mic visible at the top of the screen for the entire scene.
When Buford is in the Judge's chambers talking to the Judge you can clearly see the shadow of the boom mike visible on the wall behind him.

Character error

The judge throws out the case against the bootleggers saying, among other things, that Buford didn't have a warrant to search the property and confiscate the liquor. But the liquor was out in plain sight, so no warrant would be required to confiscate it.
