A Major Superman Star Nearly Played Hannibal Lecter In The Silence Of The Lambs
Image
Jonathan Demme's 1991 film "The Silence of the Lambs" remains a landmark in horror cinema. Based on the novel of the same name by author Thomas Harris, the film is the only one within the horror genre to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards, and is also the most recent film to sweep the "Big Five" Oscars, which consist of Best Picture, Best Director (Jonathan Demme), Best Adapted Screenplay (Ted Tally), Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins), and Best Actress (Jodie Foster). Only two other films have accomplished the "Big Five" sweep: Frank Capra's 1934 romantic comedy "It Happened One Night" and Miloš Forman's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

The Goonies’: Richard Donner Made It Great for Martha Plimpton

Image Source: Warner Bros. A Film That Launched Careers

When it hit theaters in 1985, The Goonies quickly cemented itself as one of the decade’s defining adventure films. Produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Richard Donner, the story of kids chasing hidden treasure struck the perfect balance of comedy, action, and heart. More than just a pop-culture phenomenon, it became the launchpad for several young actors who would go on to long and celebrated careers.

The movie marked the big-screen debut of Josh Brolin and provided early roles for Sean Astin, Martha Plimpton, Corey Feldman, and, most recently in the spotlight, Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan, who earned widespread...

Hollywood Pays Tribute to 'Superman' Star Terence Stamp
Image
Family, friends, and collaborators of the late Terence Stamp continue to mourn the actor’s death, and the outpouring of love from Hollywood online has been overwhelming. Among those remembering Stamp on social media is none other than his fellow Superman: The Movie and Superman II costar, Valerie Perrine. Perrine portrayed Miss Teschmacher in the two films, while Stamp played the Kryptonian General Zod, but, sadly, the two performers never shared the screen together in either project. Perrine honored Stamp on X (@TheValPerrine) by writing the following:

"Rip Terence Stamp! A phenomenal actor and beautiful man. I never had the honor to have a scene with him in Superman. I admired his body of work.

Terence Stamp at an event for Operación Valquiria (2008)
Family says actor who worked with William Wyler, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Steven Soderbergh, ‘leaves behind an extraordinary body of work’

Terence Stamp: a life in pictures

Terence Stamp, one of the stellar faces of British 60s cinema, who had a second act from the late 1970s as a character actor in the likes of Superman: The Movie, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and The Limey, has died aged 87.

His family said in a statement that he had died on Sunday morning. “He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer, that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come,” they said. “We ask for privacy at this sad time.”...

Superman, Smallville, And Star Wars Icon Terence Stamp Has Passed Away, Age 87
Image
"Kneel before Zod!"

We have some sad news to report this morning, as it's been confirmed that screen icon Terence Stamp has died. The actor was 87. His family shared the news of his passing with Reuters, revealing that he died earlier today.

"He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come," Stamp's family said in a statement. "We ask for privacy at this sad time."

The actor left an indelible mark on cinema over a six-decade career. Born in 1938 in Stepney, London, Stamp's journey began with a scholarship to the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, leading to his film debut in Billy Budd. That role earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer.

He later starred in The Collector,...

With Superman, DC Has Its First Undisputed Victory Against Marvel In 17 Years
Image
As we reach the final weeks of the 2025 summer movie season, let's take a look at the current state of the comic book movie genre. What was once the most reliable cash cow for Hollywood throughout the 2010s has since cratered in box office returns. Sure, Marvel Studios had at least two $1 billion hits this decade, with "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Deadpool and Wolverine," and DC's "The Batman" was a critical and commercial success. But otherwise, the genre has fallen considerably from its peak.

That said, 2025 has arguably been the best summer of comic book films in several years. Marvel Studios kicked off the summer with "Thunderbolts," which proved to be one of its better post-Phase 3 Marvel Cinematic Universe. "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" finally gave us a quality film adaptation featuring Marvel's First Family. Unfortunately, despite these two films undoubtedly being some of the best that Marvel has...

Now That They’ve Relaunched, How Will DC and Marvel Avoid the Same Old Downward Spiral?
Image
If superhero fatigue is a trend that became all too real, the making of the movies that brought it on might be likened to an addiction. The studios that produced those films got hooked on the idea that comic-book movies would be a limitless cash cow. And so they started to make them without limits, jacking up the budgets, the thorny interconnectedness of the characters, and the sheer volume of films they greenlit, each one promising — in theory — to be the box-office equivalent of Christmas Day. But it didn’t work out that way. For audiences, more turned out to be less. After a while, the sheer overkill of comic-book cinema began to look like it might kill the golden goose.

This summer, though, the release of two vital, game-changing superhero movies created a kind of Christmas in July. With “Superman” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” DC and Marvel,...

WB Reveals Fastest-Rising Superman Title on Max After David Corenswet’s Movie — No One Saw It Coming
Image
After James Gunn’s Superman film soared in theaters, Warner Bros. reported a recent surge in viewership on HBO Max, specifically on Superman titles. This is expected since devoted fans would want to revisit past stories of the famed Last Son of Krypton, but one project surprisingly experienced immense attention from viewers.

When one legendary story takes flight, the ripple effect can be powerful.

Twin Peaks And The 2000s Fantastic Four Movies Have A Surprising Connection
Image
When you think of "Twin Peaks," you probably think of David Lynch. After all, it's Lynch's bizarre stylings and penchant for the surreal that the franchise is most famous for. But it wasn't all Lynch -- far from it. The property was co-created by Lynch and writer Mark Frost, who had previously cut his teeth on the popular 1980s TV series "Hill Street Blues."

While Lynch brought his auteur filmmaker sensibilities, Frost brought recent, prominent experience from the TV drama realm -- a space where he had already experimented with the more ambitious long-term storytelling that made his collaboration with Lynch so appealing. Frost also returned alongside Lynch in 2017 for the long-awaited third season of "Twin Peaks" (aka "Twin Peaks: The Return"), ensuring that the unique combo that made the original TV show so successful stayed intact.

In between, of course, Frost worked on a number of other projects,...

Superman vs Man of Steel Box Office: Henry Cavill’s DC Record is Not Safe Anymore After David Corenswet’s Masterpiece
Image
For the longest time, Henry Cavill‘s Man of Steel single-handedly held the honor of being the highest-grossing solo Superman movie of all time… but, not anymore! A decade later, David Corenswet‘s Supe, all puppy eyes, pouty face, dimpled smile, and naïve optimism, has won over the fans for good.

The golden favorite of DC, Superman, landed a strong comeback and hit a home run simultaneously in James Gunn‘s 2025 summer blockbuster. Now the Dcu movie threatens the box office record of Zack Snyder‘s Dceu film from 2013, and is set to surpass its domestic earnings by tomorrow, at best.

When released in 2013, Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel started off strong but hit a speed bump in the second weekend due to a flood of negative reviews and an even harsher word of mouth.

12 Superman Easter eggs and references you may have missed
Image
After years of underwhelming releases and an overall lack of cohesion in storytelling, DC bounced back with a bang on July 11 with James Gunn’s reliable, comic book-loving direction.

Superman, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, was loved by fans and critics alike. From incredibly positive early reviews to a $125 million domestic opening weekend, Gunn’s film soared to a summer blockbuster status while delivering a promising revival of the Dcu.

In the movie, Gunn drops us into an existing universe where metahumans are already established. Instead of seeing Kal-El land on Earth in his Kryptonian spaceship, we catch him on just another day in Metropolis—a nod to Gunn’s experience of reading Superman comic books.

However, what the movie does not say out loud in as many words, it makes up for with Easter eggs.

David Corenswet in SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY IS POWERFUL!! MOVIE REVIEW! (2024)
How did Richard Pryor end up in Superman III?
David Corenswet in SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY IS POWERFUL!! MOVIE REVIEW! (2024)
Yesterday, we posted a poll asking our readers to vote for their favorite Superman movie. Unsurprisingly, 1978’s Superman: The Movie topped the list, with strong showings for James Gunn’s Superman, Man of Steel, and both versions of Superman II (the theatrical cut and the Donner Cut). Near the bottom—faring even worse than the now-infamous Superman IV: The Quest for Peace—was 1983’s Superman III.

Despite earning a respectable $59 million (a solid figure at the time), Superman III was considered a major disappointment, grossing only about half of what Superman II did. One of the film’s biggest problems, as many fans and critics now agree, was the overwhelming presence of co-star Richard Pryor. His role dominated the movie so thoroughly that it often feels more like a Richard Pryor comedy than a Superman film.

So, how did Pryor end up in Superman III? Back in 1981, as he was...

The Smallville Character Superman Actor Christopher Reeve Played
Image
Now that James Gunn's charming crowd-pleaser "Superman" has debuted with David Corenswet in the lead role, we've had four big-screen Supermen (not counting the movie serials or 1951's "Superman and the Mole Men"). But while the character's darker DC counterpart, Batman, has flourished in a cinematic environment in which new actors and directors have put their spin on the source material, Superman has had a different experience. That is to say that the films arguably peaked with the very first blockbuster entry: 1978's "Superman: The Movie."

Richard Donner's seminal superhero outing established the blueprint for the modern blockbuster, but every attempt to follow that blueprint has simply existed in the shadow of the original. Donner treated Superman and his history with reverence and respect, crafting a movie that felt grand and spectacular but which also made Clark Kent, his alter-ego, and the people around him feel real. Ultimately,...

Seinfeld Got A Surprising Easter Egg In A Superman TV Adaptation
Image
It's natural to want to give shoutouts to the things you love once you've been given a platform to do so. If there's ever an opportunity to declare my admiration for, say, The Somerville Theater in my work, I'll do so because their continued existence as one of the best movie theaters in New England means a great deal to me. It's my way of giving back. Prominent figures in the entertainment industry are able to perform a similar tribute in their work, albeit on a much bigger scale. In that case, it only makes sense that comedian Jerry Seinfeld would find a way to somehow incorporate his favorite superhero throughout an entire sitcom bearing his name.

Jerry made it abundantly clear that he's a huge fan of Superman by incorporating jokes and nods to the beloved DC character throughout his entire career. Jerry incorporated Superman into his stand-up material...

The Release Of James Gunn's Superman Reveals The True Meaning Of The Original 'Legacy' Title
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Superman."

James Gunn's "Superman" has finally arrived in theaters, getting the new DC Universe off to a triumphant start on the big-screen. The movie introduces David Corenswet's pitch-perfect Superman in a story that champions the Man of Steel's compassion and kindness. It's a refreshing break from years of grimdark comic book adaptations and superhero movies that feel the need to qualify their heroes' goodness with tragedy and trauma. Where 1978's "Superman: The Movie" wowed filmgoers by convincingly creating Kal-El's superpowers on screen, director James Gunn's charming take on "Superman" has resonated with audiences by capturing the Man of Steel's heart. You'll believe a man can care.

Originally, possibly to further differentiate itself from "Superman: The Movie" (which is often referred to as simply "Superman"), "Superman" was going to have a different title. Indeed, the project was referred to as "Superman: Legacy...

The 'Superman' Cast Is Earning Double What Henry Cavill Made for 'Man of Steel'
Image
One week has passed since Superman hit theaters, and it’s safe to say the Dcu launch has been a hit for Warner Bros. The first film under James Gunn’s creative control soared to over $220 million worldwide over its first weekend and is continuing to break barriers, now flying towards the $300 million mark. For a big-budget feature with a lot of pressure riding on it, given all the plans for DC’s future, however, the salaries have appeared on the modest side for its stars. According to a Variety report, Gunn himself got the biggest paycheck at $15 million, 20 times what the new Clark Kent and Lois Lane, David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, made at $750,000 apiece. It may not seem like a lot when compared to superhero salaries nowadays, but for a franchise starter, their totals are roughly in line with past Supermen and other comic book movie stars.

Compared to their direct predecessors,...

“I would cover it up…”: Christopher Reeve’s Reported Struggle With Alopecia Makes ‘Superman’ Star Anthony Carrigan’s Journey More Poetic
Image
The necessity of the normative good looks is something of a prerequisite in Hollywood, which actor Anthony Carrigan has broken the mould around. In a recent interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the star opened up about his chronic medical condition called alopecia areata.

The star revealed how he was told by many in the industry that no one would want to work with him in films anymore. But sure enough, he proved them wrong. He said:

I’ve had it since I was a kid and I would cover it up… never liked anyone knowing I had alopecia… eventually I got to the place where after being told I was never going to act again, you’re not attractive anymore. You should stop…

The star also opened up about how the story of former Superman actor Christopher Reeve, who also suffered from Alopecia, inspired him to embrace...

When Did Superman Become So Controversial?
Image
Superman — the most humane superhero of them all, a Big Blue Boy Scout who believes in truth and justice— is suddenly the most controversial character in pop culture.

From debates about the Last Son of Krypton’s immigration status to assertions that director James Gunn intended a Superman subplot to be an allegory of Israel’s war in Gaza, social media is abuzz about Superman, played by David Corenswet in the new movie. Even the White House via its official X account couldn’t resist getting in on the action, posting an AI-generated image of President Trump as the Man of Steel.

But this isn’t the first time pundits have tugged on Superman’s cape, attempting to drag him — and comic books — into a culture war.

Before heavy metal was said to incite satanism, before a rise in crime was pinned on hip-hop music, and before video games were blamed for mass shootings,...

Superman: The Movie was a massive success during its theatrical release, earning $300 million against its $55 million budget. Howard The Duck Isn't The First Marvel Comics Movie – The Real One Came Out One Year Earlier
Image
It took a very long time for Hollywood to take Marvel Comics seriously, and "Howard the Duck" gets a lot of the blame for that. By the mid-1980s, films like "Star Wars" and "Superman: The Movie" had incited a proper revolution in the film industry. Genres that previously weren't big hits — financially or critically — didn't just make lots of money, but they made movie stars out of actors nobody had previously heard of and even won awards. All of a sudden, sci-fi/fantasy and pulp heroes weren't just "kids' stuff." They were surefire recipes for four-quadrant success.

But even though Marvel was churning out superhero TV shows like nobody's business — not just Saturday morning cartoons but primetime hits like "The Incredible Hulk" and "Spider-Man: The Animated Series" — Marvel's first big budget foray into live-action theatrical features wasn't based on one of their most iconic costumed crimefighters. Instead, it was "Howard the Duck,...

Deadline understands that titles like Man of Steel, Superman: The Movie, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story and Peacemaker have all seen increased engagement on HBO Max since the latest film hit theaters on July 11.

Reeves’ first outing as the iconic superhero, Superman: The Movie, saw the biggest spike in viewership, up 332% week-over-week. But, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel was actually the top performing Superman film on the streamer last week, up 218% versus the week prior.

The renewed interest in Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story was also quite impressive with a 1,206% lift week-over-week.

The DC series are also benefitting from the renewed buzz around Superman. Peacemaker saw a 91% increase in viewership last week for the first season — just in time for Season 2’s August debut.

Sylvester Stallone Knows Exactly Why Rocky Was Such A Big Hit
Image
The 1970s were a tumultuous time in the United States. Whether you look at political scandals like Watergate, the fallout of the Vietnam War, and severe economic unrest, Americans were feeling quite cynical. Given the vibes in the country at the time, much of what cinema brought reflected the moral ambiguity and raw grit that was fresh on the minds of viewers at the time. Films such as "The Godfather" and "Taxi Driver" are a showcase of some of New Hollywood's rising filmmakers, whose creative sensibilities influenced cinema for generations, and helped reflect the collective cynicism of the American people in that decade. You can read /Film's ranking of the 15 best films of the 1970s here.

However, the audience's cinematic tastes started to evolve thanks to the release of "Jaws" in 1975. Steven Spielberg's film became an unprecedented cultural phenomenon and popularized the modern blockbuster for cinema. Audiences were eager...

Superman has landed in theaters, and with filmmaker James Gunn at the helm, it likely won't surprise you to learn that the movie is packed full of Easter Eggs, references, and easy-to-miss cameos.

The first Dcu movie is relatively standalone (it's certainly not concerned with setting up whatever comes next), but Gunn took the opportunity to flesh out this shared world. He's also created a living, breathing DC Universe that's like the comic books come to life.

In this Easter Egg breakdown, we're not taking a deep dive into the obvious efforts like Supergirl's cameo or the post-credits scenes. Superman: James Gunn Talks Casting [Spoiler] As Jor-El; Details On Cut Non-Family Friendly Joke Revealed
Image
Superman test screenings revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy star Bradley Cooper had been cast as Jor-El, meaning his appearance in the movie didn't come as a huge surprise to many fans.

Filmmaker James Gunn's sweeping changes to Kryptonian lore were a little more shocking. The movie reveals that Kal-El's mother, Lara (Angela Sarafyan), and father sent him to Earth to conquer the planet and continue their race by forming a harem.

Ultimately, Superman decides to embrace his humanity and never hesitates to continue being a force for good.

In an interview with Deadline, Gunn addressed his decision to cast Cooper in a role made famous by Marlon Brando in 1978's Superman: The Movie.

"Well, Bradley’s a friend of mine, and I needed somebody who could play Jor-El — and I don’t think this is a spoiler, everybody knows about this — who had the stature of what we imagine that character being,...

Fact Check: Are Batman and Superman Leaving DC in 2035?
Image
As DC Comics prepares to enter its final decade before turning 100 years old, some of its most beloved and iconic superheroes, like Batman and Superman, will also be nearing a century of existence. Which means, as per the US Copyright Term Extension Act, these characters will enter the public domain at the same time.

To put the facts in this fact check, while this might sound like catastrophic news for their invaluable IPs, only the earliest iterations of these superheroes will be available for the masses to use commercially.

Therefore, versions of them from only their earliest comic issues are meant to be freely employed by any commercial entity for their own commercial use and financial gain.

Fans of the now defunct Dceu/Snyderverse are undoubtedly upset with how well James Gunn’sSuperman performed over its opening weekend at the box office. In fact, Gunn’s unique, Silver Age interpretation of the Last Son of Krypton not only did something Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel (2013) couldn’t, but that no other solo Superman title has ever accomplished. Superman’s Underwear Returns: A Brief History of the Man of Steel’s Red Trunks
Image
Superman’s costume is as iconic as the character himself, in all its red, blue, and (sometimes) yellow-belted glory. The latest version donned by David Corenswet is a visual step back to a more traditional depiction of the suit, after Henry Cavill and television’s Tyler Hoechlin’s versions ditched its most-discussed aspect. I’m speaking, of course, of the red trunks — or underpants, as they are often referred.

To underwear or not to underwear, or how to underwear, has been a focal point of virtually every Superman production. In the last big “Superman” adaptation, filmmaker Zach Snyder did away with the trunks, which he said he couldn’t make “cool.”

“I did fight to keep them, but let’s not forget that the red trunks are left over from Victorian-era strong men, who had to wear flesh-colored leotards and trunks over it so they didn’t look naked. So...

How ‘Superman’ Inspired a Movie-Review War: When Is It Fair to Say That Too Much Fun Is No Fun at All?
Image
Critics, more than ever these days, tend to lean into the same opinion of a movie. More and more, the collective wisdom rules. “Superman,” however, may be a singular exception. It’s not just that a lot of the reviews, like mine, have been unabashedly enthusiastic, while a not-so-small contingent of critics, like this one, have slammed the movie as an overcooked debacle. It’s that when I look at the divided reviews of “Superman,” it’s as if I’m taking in the response to two entirely different movies.

One of them — my “Superman” — is a ripping good yarn, a brash, jaunty, clever, sweet, rooted-just-enough-in-the-real-world adventure that conjures some of the deadpan serial nuttiness of the Superman comics of the ’60s and ’70s. The other “Superman,” the one that’s gotten kicked in the blue-spandex shins, is too fast, too frenetic, too snarky, too overstuffed, too empty of soul and emotion and conviction.

James Gunn
Poll: What’s Your Favorite Superman Movie?
James Gunn
This is a big weekend for Superman fans. James Gunn’s radical take on the Man of Steel hits theaters and looks like it’s going to be a major box office hit. Arguably the most popular comic book character of all time, David Corenswet’s performance is earning mostly rave reviews, and yesterday, when we posted our Superman Actors Ranked list, our man Tyler Nichols ranked him very close to the top.

Of course, every week we run a poll here at JoBlo, and I briefly considered turning Tyler’s list into a poll. But then I realized it’s kind of a no-brainer who everyone’s favorite Superman is—Christopher Reeve. Pretty much everyone acknowledges that he’s the best, so rather than run a poll where 90% of people vote the same way, I decided it might be more interesting to explore the many movies made about the character.

As 'Superman' Flies Into Theaters, James Gunn's Dcu Gets New Thrilljoy Figures
Image
The weekend has finally arrived. DC fans believe a man can fly because Superman is in theaters. The James Gunn film starring David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel has seen a ton of merchandise in the lead up to the first cinematic Dcu adventure. This has included apparel collections, Funko Pops, and more. Now, the latest Superman figures come from Thrilljoy.

A part of Thrilljoy’s Pix! Vinyl figure collection, Superman will soon be joining the relatively new collectible company’s list of franchises. So far they've done figures for The Corpse Bride, The Creature From the Black Lagoon, The Conjuring, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and The Lord of the Rings. These are just some of the popular brands they have figures for. Now, Thrilljoy has their first wave of Pix! Superman pieces up for pre-order. This includes the Man of Steel, Lex Luthor, and Krypto the Superdog.

25 Years Ago, Marvel Released Its Most Important Box Office Hit Ever
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"Does it hurt?" Anna Paquin's Rogue asks Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in 2000's "X-Men" as they sit in his pickup truck trekking across the snowy Canadian wilderness, referencing the claws she previously saw emerge from his hands. After a dramatic pause, Wolverine replies coldly with, "Every time."

It is easy to take a moment such as this for granted in the year 2025 after more than two decades of superhero dominance at the box office. That said, the line still packs a punch, and it perfectly distills why this movie was able to catch a wave and deliver Marvel its first honest to goodness, mainstream movie hit. In short? It treated these characters seriously.

Granted, 1998's "Blade" was also a decent hit...

Every ‘Superman’ Movie Runtime, Ranked From Shortest to Longest
Image
The comic book universe would not have existed without the Man of Steel. Since his arrival in 1938, Superman has lorded over the fans as the ultimate superhero of all time. However, in live-action, the love and fanfare surrounding the character are not as ubiquitous and universal as in the comics.

Not only has Superman suffered through multiple controversies, but also caused enough rifts and divisions in the fandom of his live-action recreations to reinvent his iconic 100-year-old history. However, behind each of these live-action renditions lies an unquantifiable passion of filmmakers and actors who brought the character to the big screens through sweat, blood, and tears.

Here is a list of all the live-action movie renditions of the Man of Steel, ranked from shortest to longest in terms of runtime.

The 10 Best Superhero Movie Reboots (and the 5 Worst)
Image
There are lots of things that movies and comic books have in common. They’re both visual mediums. They both juxtapose one image after another to convey a narrative and make deeper thematic connections. And sometimes they both screw up a whole franchise and have to start over again.

Yes, superhero comics have been doing reboots since the early days. The Silver Age as we know it began when DC tried to goose up interest in their Golden Age intellectual property by making some brand new guy The Flash and claiming the original scarlet speedster was just a comic book. As the decades progressed superhero comics would often decline in popularity, get kicked to the curb, and then pop up years later, just in case audiences were finally interested in the Guardians of the Galaxy or the Punisher again.

Movies work the same way. If audiences dig one movie enough,...

Review: James Gunn Reimagines Superman in a Modern Political World
Image
For the 1978 original, Superman: The Movie, the tagline was – "You'll believe a man can fly." By all accounts, that film lived up to its tagline. Richard Donner's iconic film was not just a slice of Americana at the time, it brought gravitas and a grounded sense of believability to the comic book superhero. Fly ahead 47 years and audiences are well-accustomed to seeing people fly. So the question of James Gunn's reboot is, "Can he make audiences excited again in 2025?" The answer is a little complicated. On one hand, Gunn's reboot – also acting as the genesis for a brand new cinematic universe – brings color & charm back to the endurable superhero. The last time we saw Superman on the big screen (if you ignore that brief cameo in 2022's Black Adam) was Henry Cavill's Superman in 2017's misshapen Justice League. Even that film tried unsuccessfully to reform Superman's...

Stop, Already, With Superhero Movies Ending With Big, Dumb CG Smash Battles
Image
Back in 2017, Wonder Woman was going so well.

Remember? Wonder Woman killed that World War I general she assumed was Ares, the god of war. But the war didn’t stop and the idealistic Diana Prince was devastated to discover that it’s not a god which causes war, it’s humanity itself that’s flawed. It was a genuinely moving moment. Then DC Films mucked it all up. Because Ares shows up after all — as a big, dumb CG fire monster. Wonder Woman fights him — smash, boom, crash. Fans said the movie was great — until then.

Now consider James Gunn’s Superman (no actual spoilers). The film was going so well. The movie is warm, witty and fun; David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan are terrific. And then the third act becomes a CG-mayhem battle complete with Superman being endlessly punched in the face, skyscrapers being toppled (everybody was evacuated?...

James Gunn's Superman Recruited A Major Marvel Star To Play Jor-El
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Superman."

In the history of "Superman" movies, perhaps the only role to hold a weight similar to that of The Last Son of Krypton is the father who sent him away to begin with. Problematic as he was, Marlon Brando set the bar with his turn in Richard Donner's 1978 classic "Superman: The Movie" as the Kryptonian whistleblower Jor-El, who warned his home planet of its doom.

It would be 35 years before the character was brought to life on the big screen again, only this time with Russell Crowe playing the part in Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel," and he did an okay job of it, too. However, with writer and director James Gunn making it clear early on that his take on Metropolis' protector wouldn't waste time with an origin story, it seemed fair to assume Jor-El wouldn't be showing up in any form in 2025's "Superman.

Where to Watch All the ‘Superman’ Movies Before James Gunn’s ‘Superman’
Image
It’s finally time for another “Superman” movie.

Despite being one of the most iconic superheroes of all time, the superhero movie boom largely left Superman behind. After a series of movies starring Christopher Reeve in the 1970s and 80s, it took nearly 20 years for the character to have another big-screen project. Across the 10-year lifespan of the Dceu, the Man of Steel only got one solo outing.

Now that Superman is finally back in theaters, it’s time to revisit his old adventures.

On July 11, Clark Kent/Kal-El returned to theaters in “Superman” from Dcu architect James Gunn. David Corenswet stars as the Last Son of Krypton alongside Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor. The film kicks off a brand new DC cinematic universe, marking the first theatrical Superman solo film since the last DC universe started in 2013.

Before you see Superman’s newest...

Superman Review: James Gunn Ably Reboots the First Superhero for the 21st Century
Image
After two mega-successful comic-book adaptations (Superman I and II), a steep, almost unimaginable, drop in quality (Superman III and IV), an ill-conceived, poorly received soft reset (Superman Returns), and three grim-dark Snyderverse entries, the big-screen prospects for DC's octogenarian superhero, Superman (aka Kal-El/Clark Kent), as a potentially long-running, viable series looked alternatively dire, bleak, and/or hopeless. Another expensive reboot, the second in a little over a decade, seemed primarily driven by the short-sighted, stubborn desire to match Marvel's prodigious output and more importantly, its box-office returns than by a desire to bring a particular comic-book vision to fruition. But where there’s Superman (onscreen or off), there’s hope, and where there’s hope, there’s writer-director James Gunn,...

Superman Rotten Tomatoes Score Soars Past Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel as James Gunn Launches DC’s New Dawn in True Guardians of the Galaxy Fashion
Image
DC’s New Superman Crushes Snyder’s Man of Steel in Reviews, Lands at 85% on Rotten Tomatoes Under Gunn’s Vision(Photo Credit –Facebook)

With Superman, the DC Universe constitutes a new chapter under James Gunn’s stewardship, and its launchpad has precisely manifested the director’s aspirations for critical praise. When the review embargo lifted on Tuesday, July 8, as did David Corenswet’s maiden voyage as the Last Son of Krypton.

With considerable momentum, the latest iteration of Man of Steel has left behind the Dceu era. Critics have responded favorably to Gunn’s approach, which contextualizes the superhero’s legacy within contemporary sensibilities while maintaining his fundamental appeal.

Superman’s Critical Reception Takes Flight

Superman secured an 85% certified fresh status on Rotten Tomatoes after 154 reviews, the highest for a DC film since Gunn’s own The Suicide Squad (90%) in 2021. The positive reviews are attributed to the plot’s...

3 things DC's new Superman film should take from Superman: The Movie (and 3 things it shouldn't)
Image
James Gunn is bringing the Man of Steel back to where he belongs. No, not to Metropolis or the Justice League WatchTower (yet), but back to the silver screen. To celebrate the release of the DC Universe's Superman, I turned back time and watched the film that started it all: Superman: The Movie. Starring Christopher Reeve as Superman, Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, and Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, this 1978 classic proved that superheroes could work on the big screen.

While Superman has no trouble holding up a building, the question of whether the original film holds up is a weightier matter to consider. Rather than answer that question, I put together a list of three things from Superman: The Movie that I want to see in the new film, and three things I definitely don’t.

David Corenswet as Superman in DC Studios’ and Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Superman,...

Audience Rotten Tomatoes Score Says James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ is One of the Best Character Adaptations of All Time
Image
The wait is over. James Gunn’s Superman has officially landed in theaters around the world. This marks the beginning of the new DC Universe on the big screen, and fans are finally getting to see David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. He’s joined by Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

This isn’t another origin story. Superman is already on the job, and the world around him is chaotic, filled with superheroes, villains, and plenty of action. It’s a fast-paced, magical place where anything can happen, and usually does.

Early social media reactions were very positive, and that same energy has carried over into official reviews.

As of now, Superman holds an 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on more than 1000 reviews. That’s a strong start for a reboot, especially one with so much pressure riding on it.

People really loved the new Superman movie.

Superman Has Already Earned $20 Million In Presales; Should Break A Big Man Of Steel Record This Weekend
Image
Following yesterday's glowing reviews for Superman, it was reported that the movie is eyeing a $100 million - $130 million opening in the U.S. and a $100 million start overseas. That's a global debut of $230 million or more.

While DC Studios is predicting a conservative $100 million start for the reboot, tracking firms and exhibitors' internal estimates are on the higher side, with a $115 million - $130 million looking likely. That sets the stage for Superman to break a record currently held by 2013's Man of Steel.

That opened to $116.6 million, which, at the time, was the highest debut ever for a Superman movie. Now, all signs point to Superman topping the Zack Snyder-helmed movie, meaning it will land the biggest debut for the Man of Tomorrow ever.

For comparison, Superman: The Movie opened to just shy of $7.5 million in 1978, with the sequel debuting with $14.1 million. Superman III had a $13.3 million opening despite being panned,...

All Superman Films Ranked By Box Office Collection: From Man Of Steel To Superman

Every Superman Movie Ranked By Box Office Success(Photo Credit –Facebook/Prime Video)

DC Comics’ Superman has been wildly successful since he first appeared on celluloid in 1978. Before the character’s box office boom, people adored the superhero in comics, animated and live-action television shows, and crossovers.

The latest iteration, James Gunn’s Superman starring David Corenswet, has drawn much interest. Set to release soon, fans are excited to see if this version lives up to the hype.

Let’s look at all the previously released movies with the Man of Steel, ranked according to their box-office success, with numbers sourced from Box Office Mojo.

1. Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) – $874M Streaming On: HBO Max, Prime Video, JioHotstar, Apple TV+ Rt Score: 28% Director: Zack Snyder

Superman's Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed - Here's How It Compares To The Man Of Steel's Previous Movies
Image
Rotten Tomatoes has become a real point of contention among movie fans, but many moviegoers still use it as a means of deciding whether to watch a new release.

Studios tout "Tomatometer" scores as proudly as quotes from critics, and a "Certified Fresh" badge can make or break some movies. Superhero fatigue has become a very real problem in Hollywood, meaning Superman must have a high score if it hopes to avoid a similar fate to movies like The Flash and Thunderbolts*.

While this number is likely to fluctuate in the coming days as at least another couple hundred of reviews are counted, Superman currently has an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score based on 102 reviews.

For comparison, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is the lowest-rated movie featuring the hero, with 14%. From there, we have Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (28%), Superman III (29%), Man of Steel (57%), Superman Returns (73%), Superman: The Movie (86%), and...

‘Superman’ Review: James Gunn Reboots the DC Universe — and Gets It Right
Image
Maybe I’m hard to please — I’m just kidding, I’m a film critic, of course I am — but I’ve never loved any of the live-action Superman movies. They all have something I admire, from the golly gee whiz wonder of “Superman: The Movie” to the epic scale of “Man of Steel.” Heck, even disappointments like “Superman III” and “Quest for Peace” had, respectively, an impressive lead performance and intriguing ideas. But it always seemed like Superman was too much for one movie to handle. His universe was too weird. His morality was too grand. And for some reason in all these years he’s never fought one Godzilla-sized monster.

Until today. James Gunn’s “Superman” may not be the greatest superhero story ever told but it’s trying to be, and I respect that. The director of “Guardians of the Galaxy” shoves everything super about Superman into a single motion picture,...

Superman Director James Gunn Reveals Three Iconic Comic Book Moments He Doesn't Want To See On Screen Again
Image
There are certain moments that are integral to every superhero's story that it would be almost impossible not to depict when showing their origin play out on screen, but when a character is big enough to get the reboot treatment (sometimes more than once), witnessing these scenes in question unfold again can start to come across a little repetitive.

Batman, Spider-Man and Superman are three of the most popular and well-known comic book characters of all time, and it's probably safe to assume that most people - even non-comic book readers - are aware of the events that put them on the paths to becoming the heroes we know them as today.

Do we really needs to witness those sequences again? James Gunn doesn't think so.

The Superman director was asked to name three moments we simply don't need to see in a Cbm ever again during an interview with The Times.
