To me, "Pokoj z widokiem na morze" (A room with a view of the sea) is definitely one of the most memorable Polish films of the late 1970s. The plot revolves around a police operation to save a man who wants to jump from the highest floor of a tall building. The main characters are two psychiatrists. Doctor Kucharski (played by Piotr Fronczewski) is a young psychiatrist who is a pragmatist, focused on professional success, and in order to achieve it, he is capable of manipulation and lies. He believes that a would-be suicide should be brought down to the ground by force, using stupefying drugs. The cautious, experienced, and humane professor Leszczynski (Gustaw Holoubek) has a different opinion and wants to persuade the man to make an independent decision so that he can consciously give up his intention to jump. The plot is dense and keeps you interested from the beginning to the end; the main characters have distinct personalities, and the acting is good. I think that Gustaw Holoubek gave here one of his two best performances (the other one being that of Kuba Kowalski in "The Noose" by Wojciech Has). The secondary characters are also interesting, and the film is not devoid of some discreet humor. So overall the film is great entertainment, also with some material for a deeper reflection.
