The production recycled virtually all of the $20 million worth of sets, costumes, props, and extras from Calígula (1979), when it was feared that the latter would never be released due to numerous pending lawsuits. In the opening credits, there is a legal statement acknowledging this: "Certain elements of the sets and decorations created for the film Caligula by Danilo Donati have been used in the production of this film without his consent."
The film was invisible for years in its full version (105' on film) released even with regular censorship approval and the logical ban on 18s. In Italy, among other things, it was never released on video. For several years there has been an American DVD of very poor quality (it is pan and scan against the original format of 1.85:1) called CALIGULA II which, however, lasts only 80' and is dubbed in English. In very recent times, however, a slow motion copy was released on YT, also of poor quality, lasting 95 minutes. The American copy has fewer comic scenes, the one with Raf Luca for example is halved, but, surprisingly, it has two sex scenes that are decidedly longer than the Italian version. It's one with a man called Matruzio (but I don't know the actor's name) and the other, which you wouldn't expect, with Baba/Milian. Furthermore, it has a strong lesbian sequence divided into two (first two handmaids and then the Anneka/Lory duo) completely absent from the Italian version. There are some jumps, so it's difficult to understand that more had been shot even if at first glance it doesn't seem hardcore (nothing to do with the one present in CALIGULA). Finally, in the Italian version, strange as it may seem, there is almost no full frontal nudity. At this point it would be enough to integrate the three scenes described above with the others from the Italian version - at this point, perhaps, we should be there having reached a duration of around 98 minutes - but that doesn't mean that something isn't still missing. Furthermore, in the Italian version, there are fragments in which, although we continue to hear the 'friccicore' of the film being consumed, we do not hear the audio. Furthermore, in a fragment of about 10'' the audio becomes Spanish (!). And again it is clear that to make this version it was necessary to integrate some very short scenes - not of sex - from other copies.
