Since Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signed a bill that would ban drag performers from staging “adult-oriented performances that are harmful to minors,” at least 14 states have proposed similar laws. Such legislation, separate but related to a broader skepticism and antagonism among Republican lawmakers toward trans-affirming care, taps into a centuries-long history in the U.S. — and in Los Angeles in particular — of government action against gender nonconformity.

In the nineteenth century in the United States, ordinances criminalizing “cross-dressing” existed at city and state levels. Initially, law enforcement used anti-masquerading laws to enforce the restriction of gender divergence. “This was part of a larger effort to really begin regulating people’s gender expression,: explains Dr. Eric Cervini, a Pulitzer finalist and historian focusing on LGBTQ+ politics. “These laws were originally constructed to prevent people from disguising themselves and rioting.”

The comedy recordings by legendary singer, actor, and filmmaker Rudy Ray Moore have been sold to the independent label 800 Pound Gorilla Records by his longtime manager Donald H. Randell. The deal was facilitated by SongVest, the online marketplace for buying and selling royalties.

The main Dolemite comedy catalog includes over 40 of the late comedian’s most famous recordings, as well as unreleased masters with outtakes from his comedy shows, instrumental tracks, and more. “What you call dirty words, I call ghetto expression”, said in-your-face underground standup comic and R&b singer Rudy Ray Moore, who passed away 12 years ago at 81. This is the sequel to his first vehicle, Dolemite, which he based on a trash-talking wino who frequented a Los Angeles record shop Moore managed. Although his mainstream profile was minimal, Moore was well-known in the counterculture and influenced many comics and hip-hop. Moore lives again in the person of Eddie Murphy in Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander’s 2019 bio-drama, Dolemite Is My Name.

Exclusive: Eddie Murphy’s return to the screen in Dolemite Is My Name has put him in the awards mix, and he seems poised to regain his position atop the comedy heap starting with tomorrow’s historic return to Saturday Night Live for the first time in 35 years, and with a stand-up comedy special and reprises in Coming to America and Beverly Hills Cop. The latter will be at Netflix, which turned the long-gestating Dolemite project into a hit viewed by more than 40 million in its first two weeks. It’s the fifth movie collaboration between Murphy and producer John Davis — along with Doctor Dolittle and its sequel, Daddy Day Care, and the outrageous Norbit, in which Murphy played dual roles. The opening scene of Dolemite Is My Name shows promise: future Blaxploitation legend Rudy Ray Moore (Eddie Murphy) is trying to shuck an old record he recorded to a radio DJ (Snoop Dogg); Murphy’s iconic fast-talking quality is on display, but with a strong edge of desperation. You’re reminded of the star’s talent, and how it would be great for it to mature with him. So there comes some expectation for this film to resurrect the once-great performer. If to compare the once “the funniest man alive” Murphy who could breeze through a Carson interview in the 80s to the awkward, uncomfortable one struggling through a Letterman appearance to promote Tower Heist in 2011, one can easily see a kind of shared middle-aged malaise between him and Moore as we meet him in the film.

Eddie Murphy is a bad mutha returning to the screen for the first time in three years to star in a biopic and comedy about a blaxploitation legend, Dolemite.

In “Dolemite Is My Name,” which Netflix is releasing later this year, Murphy plays the comedian and singer Rudy Ray Moore, who was inspired to branch out and develop an alter-ego he could use on stage of a foul-mouthed pimp named Dolemite. When the character’s direction couldn’t take off on stage or in a comedy album, he took Dolemite to the screen and made a series of blaxploitation movies starring his alternate persona.

“Dolemite is my name and f—in up motherf—ers is my game,” Murphy says while donning a garish suit and a silly afro wig. “It’s all pretend. I just created a character.”

The riotous first trailer for “Dolemite Is My Name!,” a new original feature from Netflix based on the life and work of blaxploitation hero Rudy Ray Moore, has arrived in fitting style. Just days after Eddie Murphy signed on to star in Dolemite Is My Name, as Dolemite star Rudy Ray Moore, the rest of the cast is coming together for this Netflix biopic. Wesley Snipes has come aboard to star as Dolemite director and co-star D'Urville Martin, who is described as an, "arrogant actor and alcoholic." Also joining the cast is Mike Epps, Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess and Da'Vine Joy Randolph, although no details have been given about the characters they're playing. Dolemite (Rudy Ray Moore, The Human Tornado) has spent a couple of years behind bars after being set up by rival pimp Willie Green ( D’Urville Martin, Black Caeser). His luck changes when his madam Queen Bee (Lady Reed, Disco Godfather) pays the prison warden a visit providing evidence of Dolemite’s innocence. With the warden now rightfully suspecting that Green and a few crooked cops including the hot-headed Mitchell (John Kerry, Black Dynamite) are behind Dolemite’s imprisonment, he organises an early release so that Dolemite can clear his name. Unfortunately however, it’s not all good news as Green is also responsible for killing Dolemite’s young nephew. With revenge well and truly on his mind, Dolemite instantly (well, after some back seat limo action at least.

Anyone who has ever been married knows that In-laws, even the kindest ones, are no joke. Now, just imagine if the father of your betrothed is the Devil himself. This is the predicament in which Rudy Ray Moore's Petey Wheatstraw found himself in Moore's follow-up to The Human Tornado, and the film proved to be a turning point in his career as a performer. In the immediate aftermath of Rudy Ray Moore's Dolemite and its surprise success, it was decided that the team needed to keep the momentum going and a sequel was green lit almost immediately. Jerry Jones, who wrote the screenplay for Dolemite, was brought back to write this new film, The Human Tornado, but one gentleman who wasn't brought back was director D'Urville Martin. After a lackluster directing job on the first film, Moore and his team decided to bring in some new blood, and a young theater director named Cliff Roquemore. Hardboiled! concludes over at Trailers from Hell, with John Landis introducing 1975's "Dolemite," which he describes as "embarrassingly entertaining, 'Dolemite' is like a comic book version of a blaxploitation film."Written, produced by and starring the incomparable expletivist “adults only” comedian Rudy Ray Moore, Dolemite hits all the lurid cliches of the blaxploitation genre and keeps beating them to a pulp till the audience is too dizzy to do anything but laugh. Moore also takes credit for the film’s set decoration, although perennial second banana D’Urville Martin directs. The late Rudy has his own website here. There is a fine line between stereo-typing and the honest portrayal of criminals in cinema. Films such as Public Enemy (1931), Goodfellas, and both versions of Scarface (1932 and 1983) are examples of films both under attack and praised for its portrayal of criminals. Brian De Palma’s version of Scarface especially divides audiences and critics as to whether the character of Cuban import Tony Montana is a racial caricature or an honest look at greed and corruption. Blaxploitation cinema’s portrayal of criminals is no different drawing criticism from the African-American community, especially Rev. Jesse Jackson and the NAACP. The pimps and drug pushers in Blaxploitation cinema are considered just the same, walking the line of stereo-type and being socially conscious.
