Blizzard Co-Founder Starts New Game Company, Dreamhaven
James Caan, Joanna Moore, and Bobby Riha in La conquista de la luna (1967)
Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime has revealed that he has started a new game company called Dreamhaven.

“We’re almost trying to create a haven for creators who want an environment that is development-friendly, values product, and player experience over short-term financial pressures,” Morhaime says of Dreamhaven’s goals in a statement to Gamesbeat. “There is a better way of approaching business and game creation that can work and be sustainable and be a lot of fun and yield positive results.”

As of now, Dreamhaven intends to basically serve as a parent company to two development studios: Moonshot and Secret Door. Moonshot will be led by Jason Chayes (a former Blizzard executive producer on projects such as Starcraft 2 and Hearthstone). Assisting him will be Starcraft 2 director Dustin Browder and former Hearthstone creative director, Ben Thompson. Secret Door, meanwhile, will be led by former Blizzard executive producer, Chris Sigaty. That team’s...

Star Trek: Picard Is Getting a Prequel Novel and a Comic Book Series
The highly anticipated Star Trek: Picard series is going to get an expanded story thanks to a prequel novel being written and a comic book series being developed. These projects are going to fill in the story gap between the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis and the upcoming Picard series.

The first prequel to appear will come from Idw, and it’s called Star Trek: Picard – Countdown. This is a three-issue comic book series that will “center around a single mission that would change the life of Picard.” That series is being written by Mike Johnson and Picard supervising producer Kirsten Beyer, and it will launch in November.

Following the conclusion of Countdown, the novel will be released. That novel is called The Last Best Hope, and it will “lead directly into the Picard television series proper, and introduce new characters appearing in the show.” The series is being written by...

See AC/DC Rile Up Dutch Crowd With Seedy ‘The Jack’ Performance in 1979
Bon Scott
AC/DC played a steamy rendition of “The Jack,” singer Bon Scott’s ode to STDs, when the band appeared on the Dutch TV show Countdown on July 13th, 1979. Dressed only in jeans and shoes, Scott caressed his mic and peered out at the packed crowd as he sang sexual innuendos, leading them in a sing-along accompanied only by the drums. Angus Young, also shirtless, plays his own seedy guitar solo midway through the bluesy number.

“The Jack” originally featured on the 1975 Australian release of T.N.T. and the...

Keith Olbermann's Righteous Rage
His anger drove his ratings, but also drove his bosses crazy. Howard Kurtz on how the newly unemployed MSNBC star's indignation fueled his rise and fall.

When Keith Olbermann launched his MSNBC program eight years ago, he attempted to assemble a witty, fast-paced, post-ironic look at the day's news. Then he got angry.

Related story on The Daily Beast: Rush Limbaugh's TV Nemesis

As his indignation swelled-fueled by George W. Bush, the Republicans, the Iraq war and Fox News-his ratings ballooned as well. But at times the anger would metastasize into self-righteous fury, producing bitter confrontations with his network bosses-who treasured Olbermann's success but were increasingly worn out by the histrionics.

Olbermann's abrupt departure Friday demonstrated, in a very real sense, the limits of anger as a tool of television. The same fervor that draws cheers from partisan viewers almost invariably leads to clashes with the people who sign the checks,...
