Former Superman Actor Addresses Dcu Man Of Steel "Weakness" Complaints & James Gunn Movie Criticisms
Warning: This article includes Spoilers from the Superman movie. One of the many actors to have played Superman in live-action has weighed in about the DC Universe commentary surrounding James Gunn's new take on the DC icon. Following the Superman movie ending, Krypton's last son has an open future in the world of the Dcu, with David Corenswet now playing one of the franchise's most legendary superheroes.
A big topic of discussion for Superman has been how Corenswet's Clark Kent is depicted, both in terms of whether the hero can be deemed "weak", and in terms of how his morals are displayed. This has led to a range of takes on things like Superman's power levels, or the moments in the Superman movie where Clark saves animals.

James Gunn must feel like a kid in a candy store right now, as "Superman" has been striking a chord with critics and audiences alike. Bolstered by a charming lead performance from David Corenswet, the hopecore approach to the character has proved to be the exact kind of refresh button the Man of Steel needed. /Film's Chris Evangelista praised the superhero film as a silly and charming crowd pleaser in his review. In addition to directing/writing additional projects for DC Studios, Gunn is the man who makes everything go round, acting as the production company's co-ceo with his partner Peter Safran. The newly founded DC Universe, which started with the animated show "Creature Commandos," is meant to act as a fresh start for casual and harcore comic book fans alike. But the upcoming second season of "Peacemaker" makes things a bit more complicated.

James Gunn is setting the record straight about Dcu’s first feature, Superman, which has been labelled as “Superwoke” by many critics. Gunn, who is known for breathing fresh life into iconic franchises, has now stepped up to defend his project.
The movie stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, and is already receiving love around the world, which is evident in its box office numbers. But after being accused of pushing a political agenda, Gunn revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that it’s not about what people are framing it to be:
I mean, people did value kindness in the past. That was an American value, kindness, and it doesn’t necessarily seem to be that way to me anymore. So that was always the center of the movie for me, and it wasn’t about anything other than that.

Superman, directed by James Gunn, has enjoyed positive reactions from audiences and critics alike, though this success appears not to have translated into auspicious box office results across global markets. While Warner Bros, Gunn, and devoted fans maintain the film will break even and recoup its investment, the reality appears increasingly clear: it might not surpass Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel after all. This disappointing trajectory raises questions about launching yet another DC universe when previous attempts have faltered. Let’s examine how Superman compares to other franchise openers!

James Gunn has told viewers hoping the controversial Krypton twist in his new “Superman” film will be walked back that they are “shit out of luck,” ending weeks of speculation about a possible edit for future releases. The director explained that changing the reveal would “undo the entire emotional arc of the movie.”
Mid‑film, a restored hologram shows Jor‑El and Lara Lor‑Van instructing their infant son to conquer Earth and repopulate Krypton’s bloodline, reversing their long‑standing on‑screen image as self‑sacrificing benefactors. Lex Luthor uses the footage to rally public opinion against Superman, forcing Clark Kent to question whether his benevolence is inherited or chosen.
Hashtags such as #SecretHarem spread quickly as fans theorised the message might be fabricated or retconned. Gunn dismissed those theories, likening the Kryptonians’ view of humanity to how people regard sea turtles and insisting the story’s point is...

With Superman in theaters, another major piece of James Gunn's strategy for DC Comics' return to box-office glory is falling into place. Ana Nogueira has been hired to pen the script for Wonder Woman, the latest big-screen outing for DC's premiere heroine. The film has not been formally announced yet, nor does it have a director, star, or projected release date.
Variety reports that DC is fast-tracking the project, which represents one of the studio's most famous and successful characters. Nogueira is a veteran TV actor, with credits on The Vampire Diaries, The Blacklist, and Hightown. She's recently made the pivot to screenwriting; her first movie script was DC's Supergirl, which will fly into theaters next summer with Milly Alcock filling the red boots of the Maiden of Might. It looks like James Gunn is going to take a different direction with post-credits scenes in the DC Universe than the Marvel Cinematic Universe has and fans should be happy for it!
The post-credits "stinger" existed for a long time before the MCU came along, as writers and directors enjoyed a post-credits bit that could either be a fun joke for the audience or tease a sequel.
The MCU, however, turned this into an art form, starting with 2008's Iron Man, as Tony Stark was met by Nick Fury to discuss "the Avengers Initiative." Ever since then, almost every MCU movie has ended with some sort of tease of the future plans, and those usually work out well.
James Gunn knows this firsthand. Guardians of the Galaxy ended with a light-hearted bit as the Collector was met by cult Marvel character Howard the Duck. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2...

For the most part, the reception to James Gunn's "Superman" has been incredibly positive. The film has earned strong reviews from both critics and fans, with particular praise aimed at the film's sense of campy, heartfelt fun and the lead performances from David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult.
That said, as with any big blockbuster, there have been some critiques and a fair share of detractors. One of the biggest complaints from less positive viewers concerns Superman's fight record over the course of the film — specifically, the number of times he loses fights or gets his cape handed to him.
At face value, it sounds like a fair critique. The opening text exposition of the movie explains that Superman is the most powerful metahuman on Earth, but the next thing we see is him bloodied, bruised, and barely able to move after losing a fight to the Hammer of Boravia.

James Gunn's Superman movie gets a review from Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe boss reacts to the DC Universe film. While Gunn has finished his time with the MCU, the filmmaker's superhero chapter is far from over, as he is now running DC Studios together with Peter Safran, which led to the launch of the Dcu franchise.
The Dcu's Superman movie has finally arrived in theaters, marking the beginning of a new era for the comic book movie genre, with DC Studios now looking to create a fresh interconnected franchise. After his time with the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, Gunn is using his MCU experience with Feige to help the DC brand.
Feige recently did a press roundtable with multiple outlets, including Variety, where the subject of Gunn's Superman movie was addressed, after having had the now-dc Studios co-ceo as one of the big filmmakers of the MCU.

While horror remakes often suffer from comparisons to the iconic films they try to reimagine, Dawn of the Dead (2004) remains a standout exception. Directed byZack Snyder in his feature debut and written by a pre-Guardians of the Galaxyand SupermanJames Gunn, this brutal, fast-paced reboot of George A. Romero’s zombie classic managed to earn critical respect, fan acclaim, and a new place in undead canon. Now, with the film set to leave Netflix U.S. at the end of this month, it’s the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest zombie reimaginings ever made.
Set during the early hours of a mysterious zombie outbreak, Dawn of the Dead stars Sarah Polley as Ana, a nurse who loses her husband in a brutal cold open that’s still one of the best horror intros of the 21st century. She soon finds herself holed up in a suburban shopping mall...

James Gunn reveals the Guy Gardner line he had to cut from Superman despite it being hilarious. Fourteen years after Green Lantern's disappointing adaptation of DC's Lantern lore, Guy Gardner becomes the Dcu's first big-screen Green Lantern. Nathan Fillion's faithful take on Guy Gardner's cocky personality is a highlight of Superman, as it helps put Superman's pure-hearted heroism into perspective.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz, Superman director James Gunn reveals that Guy Gardner originally called Superman the "P word" in a previous cut of the movie. This line got "an enormous laugh" according to Gunn, but it led to "a big debate" due to the crass nature of the word. Ultimately, the word was changed, and Guy called Superman a "wuss". Check out James Gunn's full comments:
Guy Gardner didn't call him a wuss in the first cut. He called him something else. And it got an enormous laugh.

There was a lot of pressure for Superman to perform well, not just for the film, but for the franchise as a whole. The James Gunn film, which he wrote and directed, will kick off the new DC Universe.
Luckily, the film has been a success so far. It had a strong debut weekend with a global opening of $217 million, and its success continues. PerDeadline, Superman has also helped Warner Bros. leap ahead of Disney with the biggest domestic box office so far.
Disney had a lot of reasons to celebrate recently, as Lilo & Stitch has just become the first Hollywood film to surpass $1 billion at the box office. However, even with its $1.27 billion on the domestic market, Warner Bros. flew ahead thanks to Superman.

Gunn made it clear from the early days of Superman’s development that Henry Cavill was not going to be back as Superman, and that he had his own vision for the character he wanted to unpack on the big screen, not piggyback on Zack Snyder’s. But not everyone is buying the outrage. The James Gunn that Mikaela Hoover met 17 years ago is still the same James Gunn she knows today.
In 2008, long before he became the writer-director of Superman and co-ceo of DC Studios, Gunn first auditioned Hoover for his web short Humanzee!. Alexandra Daddario becomes the DC Universe's version of Wonder Woman in thrilling new art. Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman 3 was canceled despite the actress' initial claims that DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran wanted to develop the film with her. Now, Gadot is out, and a new actress will be cast for DC's upcoming movies and TV shows.
For a long time, there was no Wonder Woman movie set to be part of the Dcu's Chapter One. When Gunn announced the franchise's slate of projects, the only Wonder Woman-related project was the Paradise Lost series, which would focus on the Amazons of Themyscira years before Diana Prince's birth. However, a Wonder Woman movie is now being written at DC.
Based on that, Minsc93 shared on DeviantArt what Alexandra Daddario could look like as the Dcu Wonder Woman.

Rachel Brosnahan recently revealed she hired a witch to help her break a pesky curse just in time for Superman's press tour. Brosnahan plays Lois Lane in the new superhero movie.
Appearing on an episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Brosnahan opened up about how she has suffered from a 'travel curse' for the past decade, and she sought out the help of a 'witch' to help her lift it. "Literally, Peter Safran, who co-runs DC Studios, won’t travel with me. He was like, 'I'm not getting on a plane with you,'" Brosnahan told Fallon.
She continued to recount incidents where the travel curse plagued her past promotional efforts. "The first time I remember it happening, I was shooting a show in New Mexico and premiering a film at Cannes," she shared. "They gave me 36 hours off the show to promote this film. With Superman currently raking it in at the domestic box office, all eyes are now shifting over to the Dcu's next projects. The David Corenswet-led movie has been a hit with critics and audiences, and smashed domestic box office records (even if its international box office figures have been its kryptonite). Supergirl is next up to bat, releasing in theaters on June 26, 2026, and Dcu fans are expecting similar success from that movie. While DC Studios wants future films to emulate Superman's success, they won't be imitating its visual and tonal style. James Gunn recently addressed the future of the Dcu, and he's doubling down on one of his earliest and most exciting promises for the future of the franchise.
During a recent interview with CBS Mornings, James Gunn confirmed that each movie and series in the Dcu will be its own entity, both in terms of story and filmmaking style.

Superman star Rachel Brosnahan shared with Jimmy Fallon that it’s a miracle she got to go to Asia and South America to promote her new film. She told the talk show host during her latest appearance on The Tonight Show that she had the travel curse and had to seek help from a travel witch. Here’s the full story that Brosnahan had to share with Jimmy Fallon and his audiences.
The actress who plays Lois Lane shared that it was “a miracle”, considering that she has “been suffering from a travel curse for the last ten years.” Both Fallon and his audience couldn’t take Brosnahan’s claims seriously at first. She further added that she would always make it to the place, despite her journey being ruined by this particular travel curse.

DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn addresses having to cancel an upcoming DC Universe movie. Gunn's Superman movie has finally arrived in theaters, and the Dcu's Chapter 1: "Gods and Monsters" slate is just getting started, sd more films and TV projects are currently in different stages of development over at DC Studios.
With DC Studios putting a huge emphasis on having finalized scripts before anything goes into production, the Dcu timeline is already standing out from the Dceu movie franchise. However, if a screenplay can't come together the way DC Studios wants it to, the project simply will not go forward at all.

Seth Meyers pitched himself to James Gunn on possibly playing a Dcu hero, and the picks aren't half bad. Gunn appeared as a guest on Late Night with Seth Meyers on July 15, 2025, to promote Superman. The first film in the Dcu is kicking off a shared universe that is already populated with heroes like Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, and Supergirl. With DC Comics featuring a vast library of characters, there are plenty of roles to go around, and Meyers wants in on the action.
Seth Meyers jokingly (maybe sincerely) pitched himself to Gunn about three superheroes he could play in the DC Universe. Meyers referenced the fact that he was name-dropped in Peacemaker Season 1, making him canon to the Dcu before pitching who he thinks he could play. Director James Gunn didn't hide his reverence for Richard Donner's 1978 original when he was putting together his Superman reboot. The movie, starring David Corenswet as the iconic superhero, debuted last week to mostly positive reviews and an enthusiastic fan reception. Gunn's Superman retained the goofy tone of the original, which famously featured the late Christopher Reeve in the lead role, and paid homage to it by reusing the memorable theme music composed by John Williams. In less than a week of release, the new Superman has overtaken the original at the domestic box office.
The movie has grossed $155 million domestically and $314 million worldwide. This puts it ahead of the $134 million domestic and $300 million worldwide hauls of Donner's original. Of course, these numbers are unadjusted for inflation, but that's standard practice in tabulating box office performance. What this means, in simple terms, is that the original was watched...

Superman director James Gunn recently revealed that a certain Dcu movie that had been greenlit was no longer moving forward, and the DC Studios co-head has now elaborated on his reasons for deciding to shelve the project.
"We had a screenplay that - you know, a movie that was greenlit," the filmmaker tells NPR. "We got second draft and third draft, and it just wasn't changing. It wasn't getting better. It was staying in the same place. And I said, 'we can't make this film. We can't. It's not good. We know it's not good.' Just because we have a good director attached and a good screenwriter, it doesn't mean the script is working. Everyone is going to be upset at the end of this. It's going to come out, the movie's not going to be good. Director's going to look bad, screenwriter's going to look bad and we're going to look bad.

She came, she stumbled, she conquered. Brief as it is, Milly Alcock's Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, arguably has the best cameo in James Gunn's "Superman." It's also the perfect way to tee up the character's solo DC Universe movie, which is heading our way in 2026. Indeed, audiences probably weren't expecting Alcock's Girl of Steel to show up in Gunn's film the way she does, and it's absolutely brilliant. In fact, based on that scene alone, this daring writer feels brave enough to say that "Supergirl" is not only shaping up to match the quality of Gunn's big blue blockbuster, but it's plausible Kara may yet outdo her Kryptonian cousin's first big-screen outing in the Dcu.
Compared to Kal-El, a fella more powerful than a locomotive and sweet enough to rescue a squirrel in the middle of a city-shattering battle, does Alcock's cape-wearing alter-ego have what it takes...

Much has been said about superhero fatigue. For a time, it felt like certain people were attempting to will it into existence, but you need only look at the box office receipts of various Marvel and DC titles from the past few years to see the genre is struggling.
Not helping matters is a terrible run from DC and a hit-and-miss Multiverse Saga, which has seen Marvel Studios fall out of favour following Avengers: Endgame's record-breaking release in 2019.
In an interview with NPR, DC Studios co-ceo and Superman director James Gunn shared his take on why superheroes have been struggling in theaters.
"I don't really think there was ever superhero fatigue. But I do think there was a superhero gold rush for a minute. So I think there was a moment when anything with a superhero in it was making money. Visual effects allowed these movies to really shine and attract people's attention.

With Superman soaring past expectations at the box office, it is safe to say that the rebooted DC Universe is here to stay. The James Gunn production introduced a new Man of Steel for audiences, while also paving the way for other, lesser-known heroes to share the limelight. Fortunately, it seems a fan-favorite member of the Justice Gang will have an even more important role to play in future Dcu projects.

James Gunn's "Superman" is a love letter to many previous incarnations of the character, with a lot of influence being pulled from different eras of the comics. But it also takes a lot of cues from the original 1978 Richard Donner "Superman" film -- a movie that Gunn has said on multiple occasions had a massive impact on him as a kid. You can see that influence on things like David Corenswet's Superman valuing all life (even saving small animals in the middle of fights), the campy nature of some of the story and dialogue, and the back-and-forth between Clark Kent and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan). Unfortunately, Gunn's film also does one character from the '78 film incredibly dirty.

Edi Gathegi didn’t know much about Mister Terrific before landing the role in the new Superman movie. In fact, the first time he ever heard about the character was through James Gunn’s social media post.
Gunn had posted a picture of Mister Terrific not long after becoming co-head of DC Studios in 2023, and fans immediately started guessing who could play the role. One of the first names suggested was Gathegi himself.
In an interview with Variety, Gathegi said, “So my thought was, ‘Let me look him up.’” He said he was impressed by what he found, calling Mister Terrific “equal parts d’Artagnan and Sherlock Holmes.”
What stood out most to Gathegi was how smart the character was. Mister Terrific, also known as Michael Holt, has fourteen PhDs, speaks many languages, is a self-taught genius, and even an Olympic athlete. But behind all that brilliance, there’s a tragic past.

With James Gunn's Superman remake impressing critically and commercially, one of the most polarizing movies chronicling the titular hero has become a high-flier in the streaming world. The DC Extended Universe's Man of Steel has made its way onto the HBO Max charts 12 years after its debut.
Per Flix Patrol, Zack Snyder's Man of Steel is currently in seventh place on the HBO Max Top 10 global movie chart. After Superman's impressive box office opening, DC Studios is already looking to the future. Warner Bros. Discovery's CEO recently outlined a 10-year plan for the future of DC in film and television.
Speaking with Variety, CEO David Zaslav spoke about Superman's immediate box office success and what fans can expect to see from DC Studios in the next 10 years. "This weekend, we watched Superman soar as James Gunn's passion and vision came to life on the big screen," Zaslav said. "Superman is just the first step. Over the next year alone, DC Studios will introduce the films Supergirl and Clayface in theaters and the series Lanterns on HBO Max, all part of a bold 10-year plan."
"The DC vision is clear, the momentum is real, and I couldn't be more excited for what's ahead," Zaslav continued. Superman earned over $22 million from its Thursday previews alone, going on...

This article contains spoilers for "Superman."
James Gunn's "Superman" is currently soaring to impressive box office heights, now that it's opened in theaters worldwide. The film, which is the first big-screen entry in the newly launched DC Universe, is a much-needed victory for the DC Comics brand in theaters, after a decade filled with a select few highs and constant lows. (You can read /FIlm's "Superman" review here.)
The public's perception of Superman as a character has become warped in the current century. Many have dismissed him as outdated and boring, hence Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" (starring Brandon Routh as Superman) failing to take off. On the other end, the deconstructionist, darker take on the character featured in Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" (starring Henry Cavill as the titular hero) for sure had its fans, but it alienated many folks with its boldly different interpretation of Kal-El.

James Gunn knows his way around pop songs and important moments for Superman like teenagers at Summerfest. With a ton of songs and a rehashed version of John Williams’ iconic soundtrack, Superman is a must-watch movie.
Not just for its cinematic glory, but the amount of care and love that Gunn put into the character of Clark Kent is truly admirable. The story is not just told through the camera movement or the subtle changes of expressions, but also through the power of music and/or songs. Well, here is every song used in the Superman soundtrack and when they play.
Spoiler Alert !!!Major Spoilers for Superman! 4. Bring Me Sunshine For a Trapped Superman
Bring Me Sunshine by Sophie Madeleine is James Gunn’s way of providing irony for the character of Superman. As the title suggests, Clark Kent doesn’t get sunshine where he’s about to go, which...

Among DC's roster of superheroes, Superman is always seen as the ultimate symbol of strength. The comics, particularly early on, have often painted him as all-powerful, constantly giving him new abilities and expanding the limits of his might to new and sometimes ridiculous heights. That's not how James Gunn pictured his Clark Kent, though. The first trailer for the director's Superman opened with David Corenswet's Man of Steel crumpled on the ground, requiring the aid of Krypto to get back home. He was never going to be turning back time by flying around the Earth, lifting the weight of the planet, or destroying a solar system with a sneeze anytime soon, but, in the director's eyes, that's for the best.
