I first saw Judith years ago on the big screen when it first came out and was blown away by both Sophia Loren's beauty and her performance as concentration camp survivor Judith Auerbach. Even among the nameless, faceless members of her faith in those camps Judith has a unique story to tell.

For she was in fact the wife of Wehrmacht General Hans Verner who was given a choice by the Nazis his career or his Jewish wife. Verner disowned her and she was thrown into Dachau her daughter taken from her and presumed dead. She lived on hate to survive with only one mission, nail her ex-husband any way she can.

But the Haganah in Palestine in the days just before the formation of Israel want Verner as well. He's rumored to be in Damascus teaching the Arabs the rudiments of tank warfare, Nazi blitzkrieg style. There aren't any good pictures of Verner and there is only one who can really identify him. Hence Loren is smuggled into Palestine from the refugee camps at Cyprus that we all know from Exodus.

She's brought to a Kibbutz on the Syrian border in the care of Haganah commander Peter Finch. He's the one with the mission of getting Verner taken alive to extract information and they need Loren, but Loren has other ideas.

Finch also takes an interest in Sophia personally, who wouldn't. Another who is taken with her is British Major Jack Hawkins in one of his last films before throat cancer claimed his larynx. He's a spit and polish army regular, but he turns out to have a streak of humanity in him that even he didn't realize.

Judith kind of got lost between those other two great films about the founding of Israel, Exodus and Cast A Giant Shadow. It's been not broadcast for several years for inexplicable reasons and that's a pity because Sophia and the whole cast is wonderful.

Judith more than either of the other two films shows a good deal more of life on the Kibbutz. Israeli actress Zaharira Harifai plays the camp doctor and more than anyone else awakens in Loren a feeling that she is among friends and that the new state of Israel will give her a home and she can make a unique contribution to its founding.

Judith is not a film to be missed if it ever sees the light of day again. Demand TCM broadcast it.

This is the story of Jewish underground fighters' efforts to track down a former Nazi Panzer commander who has been helping the Syrians with tank strategies in the months before Israeli nationhood was declared. Only one woman can help them identify the commander, so they smuggle her into Palestine. Judith, the central character in the story, is a survivor of Dachau where she lost her son. But she has a darker past at the concentration camp which gives her the ability to identify the German commander. Played by Sophia Loren, Judith certainly has the physical ability to appeal to various men and get the information she needs. She also has a personal reason to find the German which complicates the story. For some reason, this movie has gotten a bad rap from some of the ratings guides but it is an entertaining and well-produced film. The technical aspects are first-rate as is most of the acting with Peter Finch and Jack Hawkins acquitting themselves admirably in opposing roles.

Sexy Sophia is always worth watching (even when saddled with possibly the worst hairstyle of her career), and she is well-supported here by Peter Finch, Jack Hawkins and Hans Verner, but this is one of her lesser films. More than the entire first hour is all setup, and lacks tension. Things get a little more engaging in the last half hour, and the film does close with some well-staged epic-scale battle scenes. So it's not quite the BOMB Leonard Maltin classifies it as. But the ending leaves the story unfinished - were they naively hoping for a "Judith II"? **1/2 out of 4.

I am a big believer in historical accuracy in films and when a film excels I try to point it out...and when it fails I quickly do the same. In many ways. "Judith" is a fine film but when it comes to the central character, the filmmakers seem much more concerned about Sophia Loren as a sexy 1960s icon than a credible actress. Too often, she is inexplicably wearing what appear to be Chanel suits and is perfectly coiffed...like a 1960s Italian movie star. However, the film is supposed to be about a Jewish woman who escaped extermination in a Nazi death camp....and showing the lovely and super well-coiffed Loren in this role seemed not only stupid but a bit insulting.

Judith (Loren) is a woman who miraculously survived a death camp. She's lost her son and her husband, Gustav Schiller, turned her in to the SS!! Not surprisingly, she hates the man and wants him dead- -but she also wants to force him to tell her what happened to their son. However, the Haganah (Israeli Defense) wants the guy as well, as he's now working with the Syrians--using his knowledge about German tank tactics to aid in the destruction of the soon to be announced state of Israel.

If they had completely re-cast the part of Judith, had her at least appear in passing to be possibly Jewish and they had her wear normal and appropriate clothing for the era, the film would have been much, much better. Still, it's a strong story and worth seeing--that's why in spite of the problems I still give it a 7. How and why Loren was cast for this film is something I would really love to see. I am NOT being anti-Loren--she was marvelous in many movies but this one is just well beyond her range. Had the filmmakers done a better job in this respect, the film easily could have earned an 8 or 9.

Not the best nor the worst of her movies - though, to be honest it was not a very good film. I was in college and saw it as part of a double feature (with Promise Her Anything - talk about a weird pairing). I liked the movie even though it wasn't really very good.

It has been almost 40 years since I saw it so I really can't remember all the plot but basically it was an updating of the biblical story of Judith. The time period is after WWII and prior to the start of Israel. Judith (Loren) is a displaced refugee who is smuggled to Palestine in a crate via boat. She emerges (FULLY made-up and drop dead beautiful)) from the crate and the plot thickens (or maybe curdles is a better word).Seems her (ex ?) husband is a Nazi, now living in Damascus, wanted by the Israelis. sSo ....

I knew it was stupid (even in my early 20's) but just watching Sophia was enough. The production values seemed good. I even bought the soundtrack. As I said, I'd buy a DVD or tape copy ....

Yes, throughout this film and being an amateur artist who likes drawing & painting beautiful women, I was mesmerised by Sophia's eye makeup considering she played a victim of Dachau yet looked remarkably fit, healthy, well fed and sported top of the range cosmetics especially on her face!Other reviewers have adequately commented on the plot and main characters.Considering I am now 69 and have always liked going to the cinema, I was surprised I had never seen this title before but thanks to www.youtube.com it is now available to world audiences.However,this TV movie seemed to be merely a device for showing off Loren's stunning figure and beauty although the action sequences of the Syrian attack on the kibbutz were well produced.My rating was 6/10.

Big budgeted epic drama with some unbeliavable happenings , set in Palestine in 1948 , the British prepare to end their Mandate, leaving an independent Israel behind. By the late Forties, millions of bewildered and homeless Jews people were on the move-across Europe and the Far East. They were looking for somewhere to live and for many of them that meant a new country. Jews demanded a land of their own. Some Jews on board hoped to sail to Palestine in the first 'exodus ship'. Other Jewish emigrants struggle ashore from island of Cyprus. And a lot of Jewish refugees were at British camps on their way to Palestine. On many of the refugees, by a famine-strike, the conditions were appalling , overcrowded, lacking food and water. This is an exodus that succeeded. In Palestine coming so soon after the holocaust, the homeless come home, but those traumatic echoes of Auschwitz and Buchenwald inflamed Zionist feelings. 1946,1947 and early 1948 were a years in which Zionist terrorist was at its height and Independent Israel still seemed heartbreaks away. The British troops (commanded by Major Jack Hawkins) guard the ships load of Jews in the ports, they were rounded up, to be sent to the camps . Meanwhile, a beautiful woman (Sophia Loren who was blacklisted in the Arab countries due to this Jewesh role) who survived a concentration camp with makeup intact goes undercover to Israel in 1948 to track down her Nazi hubby who had betrayed her. An intense wartime drama about a merciless vendetta , set when Israel is surrounded by hostile Arab nations and the Israel military force has to fight to defend itself from aggression. This exciting fim deals essentially with two issues : the relentless Judith/Sophia Loren's searching for her husband to exact revenge as well as to locate their son and about the birth of the Israel State. Acceptable performances from Sophia Loren as an obstinate Israeli woman who was betrayed by her husband and left to die in a concentration camp , Peter Finch as an obstinate Jew general and Jack Hawkins as a commandant of British forces. This is a historical film well written by John Michael Hayes , being based on a story by Lawrence Durrell. Furthermore , a nice support cast, such as : Hans Verner, Frank Wolff, André Morel, Arnoldo Foà , Peter Burton and John Stacy .

In addition , a sensitive and emotive soundtrack by Sol Kaplan , including enjoyable leitmotif . Likewise , evocative cinematography by John Wilcox , filmed in Israel, though a perfect remastering being really necessary because of the film-copy is washed-out .The motion picture was regular was efficiently directed by Daniel Mann , though it results to be some boring and tiring , a bad combination . This one was a prestigious director who made notorious films as " Butterfileld 8" , " The Rose Tattoo" , "Come Back Little Sheba" , "A Dream of Kings" , "I'll cry Tomorrow" . Although Daniel Mann also directed some failed and commercial films such as : "Super Rocky" , "The Avengers" , "Interval" , "Journey into Fear" , among others . Rating : 5.5/10 .

Saw this movie many years ago in the theatre and found it most entertaining with lots of drama and action. Had a lousy ending though, with woman seeking to find her son throughout the entire movie, failing in that endeavor. Maybe this is why I have never seen it come to the small screen.

Better than anticipated. Became even bette towards the end. The main issue is Sophia Loren. She is wearing full blown star make-up throughout the entire movie. This story requires a character actress not a star wearing top notch make up, perfect hair and a designer dress while living in a Kibbutz.

This film is a superb film. I managed to get the soundtrack of it on vinyl but have not seen it anywhere on DVD. I think it is possibly one of Sophia Loren's best films. Does anyone know if it is likely to be released at any time. This film used to be shown regularly on British television and now seems to have gone into the archives. The film shows a very good matching of characters to the parts they play. Jack Hawkins also plays his character with feeling and depth.The subject matter to certain people in view of the current situation in Israel could make this film a little to near the mark for certain people. I would ask that someone reviews the issue of non availability on DVD.

This movie is a vehicle for sex goddess Sophia Loren, while also trying to make her look like a "serious" actress. This aspect of the movie was only moderately interesting.

But if you can ignore that, it is also an interesting look at the start of the nation of Israel and the war they had to immediately fight for survival. I enjoyed seeing how they prepared secretly for the war and the depiction of an espionage operation. The immediate attacks by the surrounding nations would have been terrifying if they hadn't thought about and prepared for this so strenuously. There was great loss of life but also great acts of courage.

Peter Finch was great as an intense young Israeli leader, and Jack Hawkins was his usual personable, dapper self. The scenery and sets were good and believable.

I have experienced many emotions watching recently (2014) this wonderful movie! The movie was filmed during 1966 in Haifa, my hometown, 2 years before I was born and that made the excitement for me even greater. I especially enjoyed beautiful Sophia Loren acting both so powerful yet so fragile woman. The story tells about a holocaust survivor who lost the dearest of all, and the only reason that kept her alive was a mutual target to her, and the Israelis (each for their own reasons) … They (the Israelis) brought her secretly to Israel, just before the independence declaration, while the British were still in the area. Great pain, along compassion, hate along love, wrong along right… a conflict indeed

Underrated drama widely more interesting and exciting than the mammoth "Exodus", which by all means has its great qualities, but this is more universal in its deeper human presentation.

Sophia Loren has been described as miscast in this role, but that doesn't diminish her acting qualities. She is always superb and no less here than in any other of her films. It's true, her make-up and hair style, eye mascara and sometimes overwhelming sex appeal might seem a little out of place for a concentration camp veteran with a past as a German officer's s fling bent only revenge in extreme bitterness dominating all her life, but Sophia Loren manages it. Although she is as flamboyant a character as she is, she makes even this ruin of a girl a convincing character.

Peter Finch is equally good and as perfect as ever, while Jack Hawkins as the major approaching the end of the line gives the film the one soft touch it needs to become supremely interesting.

Saul Kaplan's music is also very adequate, actually vying with the "Exodus" theme sometimes, so there is nothing wrong with this film. On the contrary, it is underrated and as a human drama much more interesting and engaging than "Exodus", and Peter Finch is more convincing than Paul Newman.
