Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton in Equipaje de mano (2024)
Carry On Beside The Sea | New Carry On film in development
Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton in Equipaje de mano (2024)
The iconic Carry On franchise is being rebooted with Carry On Beside The Sea, here are the details.

The Carry On franchise is a uniquely British institution. Essentially its own sub-genre, the series began in 1958 with William Hartnell and Bob Monkhouse in Carry On Sergeant.

Gradually, the films evolved into innuendo-laden broad farces, which is a stereotype that might be unfair but isn’t entirely untrue. That said, Carry On Camping was the most popular film at the UK box office in 1969, and Carry On Screaming is a brilliant horror parody. The films reached a rather limp conclusion in 1992 with Carry On Columbus, which despite including contemporary comic talent of the time like Rik Mayall and Julian Clary, bombed at the box office.

There have been various unmade Carry On film ideas mooted over the years, as we examined here. The most recent attempt was a script called Carry On Doctors,...

Bill Pertwee obituary
Actor best known for playing the officious Arp warden William Hodges in Dad's Army

In his early days as a cabaret artist, the actor Bill Pertwee, who has died aged 86, did a manic cricket revue sketch at a fashionable club in central London. A haughty and inebriated diner kicked over his stumps and shouted: "How's that?" Pertwee punched him in the stomach and was escorted out by the head waiter, who informed him that the customer was always right. "As far as I'm concerned, he isn't!" retorted Pertwee.

This bubbling belligerence was successfully incorporated into the bossy character that made Pertwee famous: Arp Warden William Hodges in the celebrated BBC television series Dad's Army (1968-77), written by Jimmy Perry and David Croft. As Hodges, he perpetually clashed with Captain George Mainwaring (Arthur Lowe) of the Home Guard.

The inspiration for the way Pertwee played the warden came from his boyhood during the second world war,...

TV Star Richard 'Dying Of Cancer'

Beloved British TV actress Wendy Richard has revealed she has been diagnosed with terminal cancer - but will marry for a fourth time before she dies.

The Are You Being Served? star - famed for playing Pauline Fowler in hit U.K. soap opera Eastenders for more than two decades - has beaten breast cancer twice before, but the disease has now attacked her kidney and spread to her bones.

In an exclusive interview with British newspaper the Sunday Express, she says "It has come as a terrible shock and you just get so fed up. You think, 'Oh, crikey, here we go again', but you just have to buck your ideas up and get on with these things."

Richard, 65, says her dying wish is to wed her long-term partner John Burns, 45.

The couple plan to exchange vows on Friday before starting chemotherapy next week.

She says, "We were going to get married anyway but when we got the diagnosis we decided to push ahead and get married now. There was no rush before.

"I've looked at it from both sides of the coin. If I get better, which hopefully I will, all well and good, but, worse case scenario and I do pass away, John is secure because I have made my will and drawn up what arrangements I would like for my funeral and what music I would like played, so I've tried to think of everything."

Richard has also appeared in two Carry On films, playing a cameo role in Carry On Matron and a supporting part in Carry On Girls.
