Kenneth Cope Dies: British Actor Who Starred In ‘Coronation Street’ & ‘Randall And Hopkirk’ Was 93
Image
British actor Kenneth Cope, a popular TV and film star in the 1960s and ’70s thanks to leading appearances in Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and Coronation Street, has died. He was 93.

Cope’s former agent Sandra Chalmers, of The Artists Partnership, announced that he died at his home in the northern seaside town of Southport in Sefton, Liverpool, the area where he was born in 1931.

Renny Lister, Cope’s wife of 63 years, and family members, including actor daughter Martha Cope, were by his side. He is also survived by children Nick and Mark.

Chalmers said Cope was an “incredible icon of British TV & film.” Cope and Lister met in 1961 when they both joined the cast of long-running ITV soap Coronation Street. He played petty crook Jed Stone as a semi-regular through the early and mid-1960s. He later returned to the role after an absence of 42 years.

He honed his...

Brighton's Palace Pier withdrawn from sale by owners
Pier, which appears in films including Brighton Rock and Quadrophenia, is taken off market by Noble Organisation

One of the most famous landmarks on the south coast, Brighton's Palace Pier, known to millions across the world from its many guest appearances in films, has been taken off the market by its owners.

The Noble Organisation, which has owned the pier since 1984, put it up for sale last year for an undisclosed guide price, but now says it forms part of the group's long-term plans.

A statement from the company denied that lack of offers in the throes of the recession and diabolical summer weather were to blame. "Last year's marketing exercise generated a great deal of interest in the pier and a number of substantial offers. However, a change in strategy led us to conclude that the pier will now form part of our longer-term group plans."

On the Buses: just like a Ken Loach film
It's set in a London of rusting Hillman Minxes and bare lightbulbs, but On the Buses was a huge hit in its time, and the fanclub is still going strong

A 1965 Routemaster bus pulls up somewhere in the London suburb of Borehamwood; the passengers pile out and cluster around a nearby manhole cover, and point their cameras at it – for this is no ordinary manhole cover. It has gone down in movie history as the actual drain cover in which On the Buses' Olive Rudge got her bottom stuck. And the amateur photographers are part of a group of 100 or so punters who had paid £35 a head to attend an event called On the Buses Rides Again: a fan-club weekend to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the appearance of the On the Buses spin-off film.

It may seem bizarre now, but On the Buses was the most successful British film of 1971, outgrossing allcomers,...

Potiche – review
A delightful screwball comedy sees Catherine Deneuve blossom from 70s provincial housewife to rising political star

The French word potiche means a vase or vessel, often gaudily decorated and mostly of ornamental use. Until François Ozon's latest film, I wasn't aware of the word's derogatory meaning, to describe a woman with no real power or purpose, but after this film's success, I suspect the vernacular will have to alter to accommodate the irony of Catherine Deneuve's fine comic performance in the titular role.

You could say Luis Buñuel cast Deneuve as some kind of "potiche" as Séverine in Belle de Jour in 1967 and it has been impossible ever since for the male viewer to look at this prolific actress as anything other than a symbol of female potency, even as a sort of erotic threat. Ozon is surely trading on this iconography for a film that is a blend of boulevard farce,...

Made in Dagenham | Film review | Xan Brooks
Sally Hawkins gives a winning performance in this uncomplicated film about industrial strife at the Ford plant

Audiences of a certain age may recall a British sitcom called The Rag Trade, which ran for a few years in the mid-1970s and highlighted the antics of the militant women at a London textile firm. These characters were forever clashing with management, endlessly threatening to down tools and head for the picket line. The show's catchphrase, delivered by Miriam Karlin's shop steward, was "Everybody out!"

Coincidentally, it is the same battle cry employed by Rita O'Grady (Sally Hawkins), the firebrand hero of Made in Dagenham, which premiered in London last night, suggesting that this fact-based film is informed as much by comedies about trade union disputes as by the disputes themselves. And so it proves.

The film pays loving tribute to the striking machinists at Ford's motor plant via the...
