For those of us who grew up watching Dustin Nguyen on “21 Jump Street,” seeing him back on our TV screens in recent years — most recently on Apple TV+’s “Dope Thief” — has been akin to reconnecting with an old friend. So where has Nguyen been, and how did he make his way back to Hollywood?

Turns out Nguyen had been building a busy and successful film career in Vietnam, where he had born but left as a teen (with his family in 1975 after the fall of Saigon). He first returned to the country to shoot the 2007 Vietnamese language film “The Rebel”— which became a huge blockbuster there.

Directed by the twin duo of Tarzan and Arab Nasser, “Once Upon a Time in Gaza” is about a collaboration of a different sort: a small-time drug scheme concocted by timid university student Yahya (Nader Abd Alhay) and burly restaurant owner Osama (Majd Eid). Although set in 2007, the well-meaning, tongue-in-cheek drama has a penchant for connecting its setting to the contemporary political zeitgeist, which it vocalizes loudly and overtly. However, its self-reflexive, bifurcated story — about using cinematic images to create a revolution — ends up ironically flaccid.

Captured with careful compositional intent, the movie’s first half sees Osama, the brains of the operation, sending Yahya to acquire pain meds using forged prescriptions, which they plan to sell by hiding them in pita sandwiches from Osama’s hole-in-the-wall falafel joint. As this plot unfolds, it’s buoyed by the light and humorous tension of the duo’s disagreements — which the Nassers...

“Once Upon a Time in Gaza” immediately immerses the viewer in the granular realities of Gaza City circa 2007, a landscape defined more by the strictures of blockade than by any idyllic coastal aspiration. The narrative, in its initial phase, anchors itself to the street-level experiences of its protagonists, forging a compelling study of existence within a pressure cooker.

We meet Osama (Majd Eid), a falafel shop owner whose entrepreneurial spirit extends into the precarious domain of illicit painkiller distribution—a portrayal that sidesteps easy judgment, instead highlighting the resourcefulness bred by constraint. Eid embodies Osama with a tough exterior that nonetheless allows glimpses of a protective, almost paternal, connection.

His foil and reluctant associate is the younger Yahya (Nader Abd Alhay), a more visibly apprehensive soul whose quiet yearning for a life beyond the confines of Gaza speaks volumes about the psychological toll of the environment. Their partnership, born of...

Twin Palestinian filmmakers Arab and Tarzan Nasser, whose real names are Mohamed and Ahmed Abou, and who credit themselves on screen as “Nasser Brothers,” make movies whose titles can be somewhat deceiving — probably on purpose.

Their second feature, Gaza mon amour, owed much less to Alain Resnais than to offbeat auteurs like Aki Kaurismaki or Elia Sulieman, weaving a surreal love story centered around a Greek statue with a prominently erect penis. Their latest work, Once Upon a Time in Gaza, is rather far from the historical action epics of Sergio Leone, though it does have a few things in common with Quentin Tarantino in its TV-show-within-a-movie plot.

Vietnam’s Bhd & Vietnam Media Corp are launching sales here in Cannes on historical martial arts action movie The Last Secret Of The First Emperor, set to star Johnny Tri Nguyen (Da 5 Bloods).

The film will be directed by Nguyen Phan Quang Binh, known for war drama Song Of The Stork (2002), which was sold to more than 25 territories, and The Floating Lives (2010), which at the time of its release was Vietnam’s highest grossing arthouse film ever. His recent credits include romantic drama Secrets Of The Wind (2019).

Johnny Tri Nguyen, a Vietnamese-American actor whose credits include Spike Lee’s Vietnam-set Da 5 Bloods, will also serve as martial arts action director on the film. Nguyen, who works between the U.S. and Asia, has also had roles in action films such as Charlie Nguyen’s The Rebel and Fanatic and Prachya Pinkaew’s The Protector.

Actor Jack Lilley, best known for his different roles in the beloved TV series Little House on the Prairie, has passed away. He was 91 years of age.

Lilley's passing was announced in a post on Instagram by Melissa Gilbert, one of the stars of Little House on the Prairie. Including some images of Lilley, Gilbert shared how the late actor was one of her "favorite people on the planet." Along with touting the talents of Lilley, Gilbert went on to recall some of her most cherished memories of the actor, going all the way back to her childhood as one of the stars of the show they appeared on together.

Olive Sturgess, whose many acting credits through the 1950s and ’60s included numerous TV Westerns and the Roger Corman horror spoof The Raven starring Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff and Jack Nicholson, died February 19 in Los Angeles. She was 91.

Her death was announced by her family.

Although her TV career included guest roles in such comedies as The Donna Reed Show and Petticoat Junction, her forte was the television Western, a genre that was wildly popular in the ’50s and ’60s. During those years, Sturgess made guest appearances on Cheyenne, U.S. Marshal, Sugarfoot, The Texan, Rawhide, Have Gun Will Travel, Lawman, Buckskin, Rebel, Laramie, Wagon Train, Maverick, The Rebel, Tall Man, Outlaws, Bonanza, Wide Country, Destry, and The Virginian. In 1965 she appeared in the Western feature film Requiem for a Gunfighter.

In an undated interview on the Western Clippings website, Sturgess reflected on the early days of her career.

It’s one of the most well known lines in comedy. Tony Hancock goes to give blood and, on being told he’ll be giving a pint, says the immortal words, “I don’t mind giving a reasonable amount, but a pint? That’s very nearly an armful!”.

The writers or those words and many more were Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, who went on to create the hugely successful sitcom Steptoe And Son too.

Hancock made only two forays into film, and they are both being rereleased on DVD and Blu-ray in March.

You've probably never heard of The Rebel, but it's a TV series with some considerable influence. The Rebel was released at a time when the Western was one of the most prominent genres in film and television, from John Wayne's various exploits on screen to Clint Eastwood's iconic Dollars trilogy. It focuses on Johnny Yuma (Nick Adams), a former soldier in the Confederate army. Johnny feels lost after the end of the Civil War, and decides to seek inner peace by hunting down criminals across the West. This premise kept The Rebel going for two seasons, but it was cancelled before a third season could be greenlit and the reasoning for doing so was rather ludicrous. Carla Balenda, who starred alongside Dana Andrews and Claude Rains in the Rko Pictures thriller Sealed Cargo and portrayed Mickey Rooney’s girlfriend on the NBC sitcom Hey Mulligan, has died. She was 98.

Balenda, billed at times as Sally Bliss, her birth name, died April 9 of natural causes at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, her grandson Jim Martin told The Hollywood Reporter.

She also played a nurse on the 1955-56 syndicated series The Adventures of Dr. Fu Manchu, starring Glen Gordon, and recurred as Miss Hazlitt, Timmy’s (Jon Provost) teacher, on CBS’ Lassie from 1958-63.

In Sealed Cargo (1951), Balenda portrayed a woman who is aboard a fishing trawler bound for Newfoundland when she and the skipper (Andrews) wind up tangling in the North Atlantic with Nazis led by Rains’ character. She often said it was her favorite role.

Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" offered emphatic proof of this mindset during the summer of 1975 when it briefly became the highest-grossing movie in U.S. box office history.

Lucas' space opera was an altogether different kind of sensation. The briskly paced yarn about a young farm boy who discovers he might be the galaxy's savior ignited the imaginations of kids the world over, and Lucas deepened the viewer's immersion by employing an array of pioneering special effects and wildly inventive creature/production designs. Rebel Moon, directed by Zack Snyder, is a sci-fi epic coming to Netflix, with Part One releasing on December 22. A prequel comic series titled Rebel Moon: House of the Bloodaxe will launch in January 2024, delving into the origin stories of the characters Devra and Darrian Bloodaxe. The four-part comic series is written by Mags Visaggio and features art by Clark Bint, providing additional context to the Rebel Moon universe.

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon will be getting an official prequel comic. Rebel Moon is a pair of science fiction epics that are coming to Netflix, starting with Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire on December 22 and Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver on April 19, 2024. Directed by Zack Snyder, the Rebel Moon movies follow Kora (Sofia Boutella), a former leader in the corrupt Imperium army of the Mother World, who gathers the galaxy's best soldiers to lead a stand against the oppressive regime.

Mark Goddard, the actor who made a lasting impression on young sci-fi fans as the daring, forever impatient Major Don West on CBS’ 1965-68 series Lost In Space, died of pulmonary fibrosis Tuesday in Hingham, Massachusetts. He was 87.

His death was announced by his wife Evelyn Pezzulich in a Facebook post.

“I’m so sorry to tell you that my wonderful husband passed away on October 10th,” Pezzulich wrote. “Several days after celebrating his 87th birthday, he was hospitalized with pneumonia. We were hopeful when he was transferred to a rehabilitation center, but then doctors discovered he was in the final stages of pulmonary fibrosis for which there is no cure.”

By the time he was cast in his breakthrough role as the headstrong Major West, Goddard had built a reputation as a rising young actor through supporting appearances in late-’50s fare such as Johnny Ringo and The Rebel.

Rye Lane is a deeply joyful film. It’ll sit in cinemas at the end of this week with various multiplex blockbusters and earns its place with a wonderfully vibrant look at love and destiny.

We had the chance to speak with director Raine Allen Miller and leads Vivian Oparah and David Jonsson who star as Yas and Dom, two twenty-somethings both reeling from bad break-ups, who connect over the course of an eventful day in South London – helping each other deal with their nightmare exes, and potentially restoring their faith in romance.

Linda Marric sat down with the leading duo and their director to talk about how their chemistry, so important to the film’s success, was created, the distinct look of the film and so much more.

By the creative team behind The Rebel (2009), Clash was directed by Le Thanh Son and also became the highest-grossing film in Vietnam when it was released.

Viet Film Fest 2021, presented by the Vietnamese American Arts & Letters Association (Vaala), has announced the winners of their Trống Đồng Award for Best Short, Best Actress, Best Actor and Trống Đồng Award for Best Feature. Filming is underway on BBC One drama series “Sas: Rogue Heroes,” from “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight. Based on Ben Macintyre’s best-selling book of the same name, “Sas: Rogue Heroes” is a dramatized account of how a Special Forces unit, the Sas, was formed under extraordinary circumstances during WWII.

Like her character Quynh, the immortal partner of Andy (Charlize Theron) in The Old Guard, she’s been all over. She was the radio propagandist Hanoi Hannah in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods; she also played Tien, the Inferni Elf assassin pursuing Will Smith in Bright, as well as and the Kung Fu assassin Mantis in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny; her tour de force, Furie, is on Netflix too. Made in Vietnam, Furie was submitted to the Academy Awards as an International Feature Film entrée. Beyond Netflix, and in a galaxy far, far away, she played Paige Tico, the rebel martyr and Dreadnought bombardier who was the sister of Rose in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Authors and (especially) documentary filmmakers have long been fascinated (much as the general public) with the romances of the stars, namely what happens when the gods and goddesses of Hollywood, the modern Olympus, fall in love. Just a few weeks ago HBO premiered an excellent film on the life of actress Natalie Wood, with much of its running time devoted to her marriage(s) to “matinee idol’ Robert Wagner. Their coupling takes its place with other “tinsel town” teams like Bogie and Bacall, Gable and Lombard, and Taylor and Burton. The same holds true in the music industry, and in this new film’s case, the country music kings and queens with Johnny Cash and June Carter very near the top of the list. Their story has already inspired an Oscar-winning “bio-pic” from 2005 Walk The Line. But often in the rush to tell these tales, the former flames, and even future spouses are ignored.

James Drury, who starred in one of the longest running Westerns in TV history, “The Virginian,” has died. He was 85.

His assistant, Karen Lindsey, shared the news on Facebook Monday, writing that he “passed away this morning of natural causes.” TheWrap reached out to his agent for additional comment.

While his most famous role was “The Virginian,” Drury also starred in Westerns on the big screen, including 1959’s “Good Day for Hanging,” 1960’s “Ten Who Dares” and “Ride the High Country.” His other credits include “Love Me Tender,” alongside Elvis Presley, and “Bernardine,” opposite Pat Boone.

After last year’s Savage Seventeen, this year’s program is dubbed the “Still Too Young to Die” edition with five international premieres, 23 North American premieres, four U.S. premieres, and eight New York premieres, showcasing the most exciting action, comedy, drama, thriller, romance, horror, and art-house films from East Asia, and bringing close to 30 directors and nine actors from Asia.

Actress Roberta Haynes died Thursday in her home in Delray Beach. She was 91.

Haynes is known for her role opposite Gary Cooper in the 1953 Mark Robson-directed film Return to Paradise where she played a native of Matareva who develops a relationship with Cooper’s American drifter Mr. Morgan. In the same year, she starred in two westerns including The Nebraskan directed by Fred F. Sears and Gun Fury directed by Raoul Walsh.

Born Roberta Arline Schack in Wichita Falls, Tex. on Aug. 19, 1929, Haynes was raised in Toronto and moved on to California where she starred on Broadway and film. In 1949, she appeared in the film Knock on Any Door starring Humphrey Bogart and the John Huston-directed We Were Strangers. On stage, appeared The Madwoman of Chaillot in 1950 opposite John Carradine as well as The Fighter with Lee. J. Cobb in 1952. Her other film credits include High Noon, Gun Fury and Hell Ship Mutiny.

Furie came onto my radar because it’s a martial arts film starring Veronic Ngo. She’s been popping up in movies lately, most notably a small role in The Last Jedi and minor role in the head scratching sequel to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. I, however, remember her from The Rebel, a 2007 martial arts film starring and action directed by Johnny Nguyen. You may remember him as the staircase boss from the infamous one take scene in Tony Jaa’s Tom Yum Goon. While it’s been awhile since I’ve seen The Rebel, I remember being pretty impressed with Veronica’s ability as a martial artist. Strangely though, more than 10 years later, I finally get to see her in another martial arts role that isn’t a throw...

Back in the late '00s, led by incredible performer Johnny Tri Nguyen and director Charlie Nguyen, Vietnam was beginning to make a name for itself. Films like The Rebel and Clash were making the festival rounds and even getting picked up for overseas distribution thanks to high octane, inventive action sequences and gritty, real stories that connected with audiences much in the same way that late '80s-early '90s Hong Kong martial arts cinema did. Then, around 2013 with the banning of another Johnny Tri Nguyen/Charlie Nguyen collaboration, the politically charged Cho Lon, everything just kind of died. Cut to five years later and now...
