The film's original Italian title was "Maciste and the Queen of Samar," while its French title was "Maciste Against the Men of Stone" and was one of many films about the cult Italian hero Maciste. When the film was brought to America the English translators who dubbed the film changed the hero's name from Maciste to Hercules and called it "Hercules Against The Moon Men" since Hercules is better known in America than Maciste is.
Some versions omit the fight scene between Hercules and the monster after Hercules escapes from the pit that was meant to drown him.
The film was riffed on Mystery Science Theater 3000 (season 5, episode 10, 1992).
The U.S. release was one of the small number of films to credit the widescreen process as "Chromoscope." Chromoscope was the Techniscope process but has the lab work by a company other than Technicolor.
This would be the final film project for director Giacomo Gentilomo. He left the film industry to pursue a career as a full-time painter.
