Doctor William Barton (Jeff Morrow) and his wife Marcia (Leigh Snowden), along with three other scientists -- Doctors Thomas Morgan (Rex Reason) (genetics), Borg (Maurice Manson) (roentgenology), and Johnson (James Rawley) (biochemistry) -- plus guide Jed Grant (Gregg Palmer) embark on an expedition into the Everglades to capture the Gill Man. Unfortunately, the Gill Man is horrifically burned in the capture, but the scientists note that, although his gills are badly burned, he is taking in air through his lungs, changing him into an air breathing creature and making him more human.

The film is based on a screenplay by Arthur Ross.

More specifically, it's a sequel to El regreso del monstruo (1955) (1955), which is the sequel to El monstruo de la laguna negra (1954) (1954), as Dr Johnson mentions information obtained about the Gill Man from Ocean Harbor Oceanarium in Florida where the Gill Man was taken in Revenge of the Creature.

The only character to appear in all three Creature movies is the Gill Man played again by Ricou Browning (in water). Gill Man on land is played by Don Megowan.

Barton kills Grant in a jealous rage and dumps his body in the Gill Man's enclosure to make it look like his doing. Apparently aware that Barton is trying to pin the murder on him, Gill Man breaks down the gate, follows Barton to his room, and kills him by tossing him off the veranda. As Marcia, Morgan, Borg, and Johnson watch, Gill Man tears down the electric fence and gets away, but not before being shot in the chest. The next day, as Marcia prepares to leave for the train station, Morgan, Borg, and Johnson discuss the failure of their experiment. 'The beast remains a beast,' Borg says, but Morgan points out that the creature didn't attack until he was attacked, a step forward in his social development. In the final scene, the Gill Man walks across a bluff that leads to the ocean.
