The Intruder

Editar
  • Wolf Merton: I want the money that was in that desk. I'd also like to know what's turned a good soldier into a thief!
  • Wolf Merton: I know it's a long time since the war but I don't believe a man can change so much. I'd have trusted him anywhere.
  • Ginger Edwards: What's it like being an officer?
  • John Summers: Bloody awful!
  • [last lines]
  • [Wolf Merton can be seen in his car, speaking with Ginger Edwards, who has agreed to surrender to the police]
  • Ginger Edwards: I thought I'd save everyone a lot of trouble.
  • Wolf Merton: [smiles] We'll keep in touch, Ginger.
  • Ginger Edwards: Thank you, sir.
  • Wolf Merton: You know where to get a hold of me. You know where I live.
  • Ginger Edwards: [smiles broadly] I'll use the front door next time, sir.
  • [Merton smiles at Edwards before he drives off. Edwards smiles in return as he watches the car drive away. This scene goes on until fadeout...]
  • [Wolf Merton can be seen speaking with John Summers while the former is shaving]
  • Wolf Merton: Oh, and Summers, one other thing.
  • John Summers: Yes sir?
  • Wolf Merton: [smiles] I'm not allowed to make mistakes.
  • [Summers returns the smile before he turns and exits]
  • [Wolf Merton can be seen speaking with John Summers as the latter works at a produce stand]
  • John Summers: That's about all there is to it. A bit later on after I'd settled down, I was glad you didn't take me at my word that morning. But I knew I've got to steer clear of Ginger, for both our sakes.
  • [Merton thinks about what he's just heard when he notices something on a nearby box]
  • Wolf Merton: Someone been hurt?
  • John Summers: Yes, one of the chaps cut himself this morning.
  • [Wolf Merton is seen speaking with John Summers at a produce stand]
  • Wolf Merton: Where's Edwards? Where is he?
  • John Summers: I told you, I don't know.
  • Wolf Merton: What are you two up to? I'll find him if I have to move every crate in this place.
  • [unbeknownst to Merton, Ginger Edwards has been hiding in a basement nearby. He's heard everything that was spoken between Merton and Summers. With this, Edwards quickly begins looking for an exit]
  • [Wolf Merton can be seen in a produce market as he attempts to find Ginger Edwards. After a few seconds of searching, he walks over to John Summers]
  • Wolf Merton: Can't you see I'm trying to help him, too?
  • John Summers: Is that why you phoned the police last night-?
  • [Summers catches himself as Merton quickly turns to look at him]
  • Wolf Merton: So you have seen him. Does Ginger really believe that?
  • [Summers remains silent]
  • Wolf Merton: Come on, now. Where is he?
  • John Summers: [dejectedly] Down here.
  • [Summers walks over the entrance to the basement level of the market. He descends down below while Merton follows]
  • [Wolf Merton can be seen sitting at a counter. As he's looking around, he notices John Summers]
  • Wolf Merton: Hello, Summers.
  • [Summers turns to notice Merton. Upon recognizing him, Summers stands at attention]
  • John Summers: Evening, sir.
  • [Merton turns fully around to face Summers]
  • Wolf Merton: What about a drink?
  • John Summers: Thank you, sir.
  • Wolf Merton: Whiskey?
  • John Summers: Please, sir.
  • [Wolf Merton can be seen preparing drinks for him and John Summers]
  • John Summers: Thank you for all you've done for me, sir.
  • Wolf Merton: Nonsense. You've earned your comission.
  • [Merton sets a drink on the counter]
  • Wolf Merton: There's no question of thanks about it.
  • [Summers picks up his drink]
  • John Summers: Thank you, sir.
  • Wolf Merton: [holds up his drink] Anyway, here's to you. Congratulations, and welcome to the mess.
  • John Summers: [holds up his drink] Thank you, sir.
  • [Ginger Edwards can be seen arriving at the residence of Walter Lowden. After knocking on the door, he waits for a few seconds before the door opens. Entering the view is a man wearing glasses. This is Lowden]
  • Lowden: Welcome home, Arthur.
  • Ginger Edwards: [smiles] Hello, Uncle Walter.
  • [the two of them stare at each other and smile for a few seconds before Lowden opens the door]
  • Lowden: Well, come in, my boy, come in.
  • [Edwards enters the apartment]
  • Lowden: Well, Dickie will be sorry to have missed you.
  • [Lowden closes the door before taking Edwards' bag]
  • Lowden: Here, let me take that.
  • [Ginger Edwards can be seen speaking with Walter Lowden. As they are talking, Lowden looks up and notices something. He sees Dickie trying to sneak in without being noticed. Upon seeing Dickie, Lowden becomes upset]
  • Lowden: Richard, come here at once.
  • [Dickie stops in his tracks as Lowden approaches him and grabs him by the arm. Lowden seethes as he looks at Dickie's appearence]
  • Lowden: [sharply] You've been playing around with those young hooligans again. Haven't you? Look at you! Did you know what I said was going to happen if I caught you at it again? Hmm?
  • [Ginger watches the scene in front of him as he tries to diffuse it]
  • Ginger Edwards: I'm afraid it was my fault.
  • [Lowden looks sharply at Ginger]
  • Lowden: As long as you keep out of this, if you don't mind. Please, Arthur?
  • [Lowden turns towards Dickie again]
  • Lowden: Well? What did I say was going to happen?
  • [Dickie remains silent]
  • Lowden: Very well then. Go upstairs.
  • [as Dickie begins to head towards the stairs, Lowden shoves him]
  • Lowden: Go on!
  • [Ginger Edwards can be seen ascending a flight of stairs in a hospital. As he reaches the top, he sees Walter Lowden waiting. Lowden looks furious]
  • Lowden: [sharply] Go back! You're not wanted here!
  • [as Ginger tries to move, Lowden grabs him by his jacket and yanks him up close]
  • Lowden: Haven't you done enough harm already? If you hadn't come home, that boy would be safe and sound today! If you hadn't tried to dispute my authority this wouldn't have happened! He was running to you!
  • Ginger Edwards: [with a sense of confusion] Running to me?
  • Lowden: Yes!
  • Ginger Edwards: You went for him the moment my back was turned!
  • [as Ginger turns to leave, Lowden grabs him by the coat again]
  • Lowden: You're too late, you fool! The boy's dead!
  • [Ginger looks shocked]
  • Lowden: Yes! And it's your fault! You killed him!
  • [Ginger glares at Lowden for a few seconds as he tries to process what he's heard. At that moment, rage begins to fill inside him. He then loses control and punches Lowden in the face. Lowden then falls backwards and down the stairs, coming to rest on the landing. Ginger and a few of the hospital staff appear shocked at what has happened]
  • [Wolf Merton can be seen eating with Don Cope, who has just finished explaining a story to him regarding Ginger Edwards]
  • Don Cope: Manslaughter, it was, sir.
  • Wolf Merton: You were at the trial?
  • Don Cope: They called me, and the adjutants, and Colonel Grayson, who took over the regiment when you went to Germany.
  • [Cope stands up and walks over to a shelf, where he takes a jar before sitting down again]
  • Don Cope: We all gave Ginger the best possible character, sir. His sentence was... ten years.
  • Wolf Merton: [surprised] Ten years?
  • Don Cope: It wasn't an accident, sir. Judge pointed out it was deliberate blow. He only needed the intent to kill to make it a murder.
  • [In his residence, Lowden has just reprimanded Dickie for certain actions. After sending the latter upstairs, the former can be seen walking over to where Ginger Edwards is sitting]
  • Lowden: I won't have him associating with those young ruffians. Turning himself into a cosh boy or whatever it is they call themselves.
  • [at Lowden's residence, Ginger Edwards can be seen interacting with him. Lowden appears upset, having just finished reprimanding Dickie]
  • Ginger Edwards: They were just having a bit of fun.
  • Lowden: Fun, do you call it? When a child comes home in that state?
  • Ginger Edwards: Well, he got a bit excited, that's all.
  • Lowden: Well, Master Richie will have to learn to curb his excitement.
  • [in their apartment, Tina can be seen speaking with Bill about Ginger Edwards]
  • Tina: Bill, what will I do?
  • Bill: Tell him to buzz off.
  • Tina: But he wants to marry me.
  • Bill: But baby, I'm gonna marry you. Did I not tell you?
  • [Tina appears somewhat trouble as she tries to process what she was told]
