  • Peter Manning: Like being born again...
  • [during the midst of a standoff in the warehouse. Father Slocum can be seen sitting at a table. Vincent Canelli approaches him with some paper and a pen]
  • Vincent Canelli: Tell them we have six hostages.
  • [Canelli looks up at the hostages while Father Slocum just stares at him]
  • Vincent Canelli: No, make it five. Leave the pilot out.
  • [Canelli turns his attention to Father Slocum again]
  • Vincent Canelli: Come on, start writing.
  • [Father Slocum continues starring at Canelli as teargas from outside can be seen entering through a nearby window]
  • [in the warehouse, Father Slocum can be seen with a pen and paper as Canelli is staring intensely at him]
  • Vincent Canelli: Now let's get the letter started.
  • Father Slocum: No, I won't be a party to it.
  • Vincent Canelli: Now, don't push, Father. Your collar isn't gonna protect you.
  • Father Slocum: I'm protected, Vincent. The only kind of protection that's worthwhile.
  • Vincent Canelli: A 38 will change that quick enough.
  • Father Slocum: Only for those afraid to die.
  • [in the warehouse, Father Slocum can be seen in the midst of a standoff with Vincent Canelli, the latter who is staring intensely at him. As the standoff continues, Hatti Combest can be seen approaching and putting her hand on Canelli's shoulder]
  • Hatti Combest: Vince, Vince, don't. Not a priest. Anybody can write the note. Any of us. It's the same thing
  • [Canelli shoves Hatti as he continues starring at Father Slocum]
  • Vincent Canelli: You're not scared of dying?
  • Father Slocum: [shakes his head] No, Vincent. I'm not.
  • Vincent Canelli: All right, let's find out.
  • [Canelli reaches into his coat and begins to pull out a gun. Seconds later, one of the hostages charges at Canneli and grabs hold of him. However, Canelli quickly overpowers him and knocks him to the floor. He then shoots him and injures him for good measure]
  • Police Inspector Hailey: Go ahead - put it in your papers. Tell them I've got no feelings, I didn't do anything to help those people up there, I'm a disgrace to my own church for letting a priest die. Canelli and Manning's comin' out feet first before I leave here.
  • [Vincent Canelli and Peter Manning can be seen in their jail cells. Manning is talking to his lawyer, while Canelli watches]
  • Vincent Canelli: How big a cut you getting out of Manning's take?
  • Peter Manning: Shut your fat kisser, Napoleon.
  • Vincent Canelli: Aw, don't be a sucker, Manning. They don't commute cop killers, not even for 200 G's.
  • [following a conversation with Peter Manning, a guard can be seen approaching Vincent Canelli's cell. This is Lou Mehrtens. He walks up to the cell and glares at Canelli]
  • Lou Mehrtens: Why don't you butt out?
  • [Canelli is silent for a few seconds before he glares at Mehrtens and punches him in the stomach before grabbing him]
  • Vincent Canelli: Never lead with your belly.
  • [last lines]
  • [Peter Manning has just killed Vincent Canelli, who lies lifeless on the floor of the warehouse. After looking at Canelli's corpse for a little bit, Manning briefly looks at Ellen Norris before he opens the door]
  • Peter Manning: [shouting] I'm coming out, Hailey! With a gun in my hand!
  • [Manning heads out the door and into the line of fire. The sounds of machine guns firing can he heard. Ellen Norris listens as she realizes what's happened. The camera then shows a shot of Canelli's corpse on the floor, with the focus heading towards his gun, where it remains until fadeout...]
  • [in the prison cell block, Lou Mehrtens can be seen obtaining a truncheon from a drawer in his desk. As he begins to approach Vincent Canelli's cell, someone intercepts him. This is John Norris]
  • John Norris: Drop it, Lou! That's what he wants you to do.
  • Vincent Canelli: [taunting] Let him go, Norris!
  • [Canelli picks up a stool]
  • Vincent Canelli: I got a stool in here just itching to break his head!
  • John Norris: Don't do it, Lou. He just wants to hurt someone. With only one day to live, he'd like to hurt everybody he can.
  • [Mehrtens tries to break free of Norris' restraint, but eventually, he gives up and calms down]
  • [Peter Manning can be seen in his cell, speaking with his lawyer. At some point, following a disturbance in the cell block. John Norris can be seen approaching the cell door, which he unlocks]
  • John Norris: If you're finished, counsel, I'll let you out and get things quiet.
  • [during the midst of the standoff in the warehouse, Vincent Canelli can be seen threatening Father Slocum]
  • Vincent Canelli: Okay, Slocum. You're elected.
  • Father Slocum: A little while ago, I thought there was something in you worth saving, worth praying for. But there isn't. There isn't one decent impulse in your twisted mind.
  • [Canelli glares as he pulls out a gun and points at Slocum, who remains unintimidated]
  • Father Slocum: That's your kind of courage.
  • [Slocum stares directly at Canelli]
  • Father Slocum: Get it over with.
  • [in the midst of the standoff in the warehouse, Vincent Canelli can be seen preparing to give a warning to Inspector Hailey]
  • Vincent Canelli: Look down the elevator shaft, Hailey! I'm sending you a package!
  • [at the warehouse, Vincent Canelli, along with his gang and hostages can be seen arriving. At some point, he notices his girlfriend, Hatti Combest, who he approaches and embraces]
  • Vincent Canelli: [smiles] You set it up for me, honey.
  • Hatti Combest: Darling.
  • [the two of them embrace]
  • Vincent Canelli: You're the one person I was sure of. I knew you'd go all the way for me.
  • Hatti Combest: [smiles] I love ya, Vince.
  • [at the warehouse, Vincent Canelli can be seen embracing his girlfriend, Hatti Combest, who notices the state of the clothes he's wearing]
  • Hatti Combest: Oh, darling, there's decent clothes here.
  • [Vincent then turns and looks at someone standing nearby. This is Joey Stewart]
  • Vincent Canelli: Joey, what do you think of the setup? Real bungalow living, huh? Home cooking, everything that goes with it.
  • [Vincent and Hatti embrace again]
  • Joey Stewart: Yeah, but while you're playing footsie, our 200 g's is croaking.
  • [Vincent and Hatti look over to notice the injured Peter Manning]
  • Vincent Canelli: A rifle slug stopped him.
  • [at the warehouse, Vincent Canelli and his girlfriend, Hatti Combest watch as an injured Peter Manning is brought in. Among the ones supervising is Father Slocum. Upon seeing the priest, Hatti looks worried]
  • Father Slocum: Over here please.
  • Hatti Combest: Shouldn't have brought the priest, Vince. It's bad luck.
  • Vincent Canelli: Yeah, for him.
  • [Vincent Canelli and Hatti Combest can be seen watching as an injured Peter Manning is brought into a warehouse. As he's watching, Dr. Hart passes. Vincent then grabs the doctor as he goes by]
  • Vincent Canelli: Now, uh, gotta get lucky, Doc. Remember, I have to be able to talk to him.
  • Dr. Hart: I'll do what I can for him.
  • [at the warehouse, Vincent Canelli and his girlfriend, Hatti Combest, can be seen observing the injured Peter Manning]
  • Hatti Combest: Will he live?
  • Vincent Canelli: He's got to. Without his money, there'll be no getaway.
  • [Vincent Canelli and Hatti Combest can be seen in the warehouse where the former has taken his gang and hostages. Hatti has just informed Vincent about a promise she's made to the gang]
  • Hatti Combest: I promised the boys a share.
  • Vincent Canelli: How big?
  • Hatti Combest: Forty-thousand. Twenty to Joey.
  • Vincent Canelli: Well, still buy us a lot of living.
  • [in the cell block, the Prison Warden can be seen speaking with Vincent Canelli. Also present is Father Slocum]
  • Prison Warden: Your warrant reads the same, Canelli.
  • Vincent Canelli: I want the full treatment. Read it. It's the law, isn't it?
  • Father Slocum: There isn't too much time left, Vincent. I'd hoped you'd spend it with me.
  • Vincent Canelli: Now, you keep out of this father.
  • [Canelli looks at the warden]
  • Vincent Canelli: Go ahead, Warden. Full treatment.
  • [in the cell block, Vincent Canelli can be about to be taken to his execution. Father Slocum is also present]
  • Vincent Canelli: Find yourself another boy, Father.
  • Father Slocum: All right, Vincent. But if you want me, I'll be there.
  • [following his escape, Vincent Canelli has taken a few hostages in the back of a van. Among them is Dr. Hart, who is examining an injured Peter Manning]
  • Dr. Hart: I can't do anything unless we can stop and get some light.
  • Vincent Canelli: Give him a temporary patch up.
  • Dr. Hart: I can't. If I try to do anything for him while we're bouncing around, he'll probably die.
  • Vincent Canelli: Well, you better get lucky, Doc. If he doesn't live long enough to make me a little speech, you're going out with him.
  • [following his escape, Vince Canelli has abandoned a few convicts he took with him. Before leaving, he gives them a gun and three bullets]
  • Father Slocum: No, Vincent. They'll use that gun to kill innocent people.
  • Vincent Canelli: Well, that's how it goes some days, Father. They keep the cops busy, and that gives us some more time. That's what I need now, Time, two-hundred grand.
  • [at the warehouse, Vincent Canelli can be seen exiting the van he escaped in. As he's getting out, he looks at one of his waiting henchmen]
  • Vincent Canelli: Have somebody pick up some whiskey. Manning's gonna need it.
  • [at the warehouse, Ellen Norris approaches Vincent Canelli, who is with his girlfriend, Hatti Combest]
  • Ellen Norris: Where is my father?
  • Vincent Canelli: Left him at the prison.
  • [Vincent turns and looks at Hatti]
  • Vincent Canelli: Oh, I have to talk to the pilot, honey.
  • [as Canelli goes over to speak with the pilot, Hatti looks at Ellen for a few seconds before she turns and walks off]
  • [at the warehouse, Vincent Canelli can be seen handing some money to one of his henchmen, Joey Stewart]
  • Vincent Canelli: Here's your half, Joey. The rest when we get to the plane.
  • Joey Stewart: I sure wish I could blow this whole setup right now.
  • Vincent Canelli: Well, in two hours, it'll just be dark enough for us to leave.
  • [in the storage warehouse. Father Slocum can be seen approaching Vincent Canelli after the latter has obtained his money]
  • Father Slocum: May I talk to you, Vincent?
  • Vincent Canelli: I'm not in a buying mood, Father.
