The theme song was titled "Bows and Strings in Teasing" by Alexander Laszlo. It was originally written for the Republic film The French Key (1946). Other musical cues were supplied through David Chudnow's MUTEL Music for Television Library. There was no original music created for this show, although Laszlo did a new arrangement of his theme for this series, which is now known as the "My Little Margie" Theme.
In March 1952 a pilot (never aired) for the series was shot with Mona Freeman playing Margie opposite Charles Farrell.:whether coincidentally Freeman had been signed since 1943 to CBS-TV's parent company Paramount Pictures, although Freeman had been released from her Paramount contract in January 1952. Reportedly the original choice for the Margie role had been between Freeman and Diana Lynn who like Freeman would turn 26 in 1952 and had been a Paramount Pictures contractee for some ten years, playing film roles comparable to Freeman's: they had both been considered for the "kid sister" role in Mi querida Ruth (1947) given to Freeman.
After Mona Freeman - voluntarily or otherwise - "bowed out" of the series the title role was offered to Wanda Hendrix who like Freeman and early contender Diana Lynn was signed to CBS-TV's parent company Paramount Pictures. Hendrix passed, unimpressed with the script of a ''...Margie'' episode she'd been given to read.
Each story began with a shot of portrait photos of Margie and Vern; the camera zoomed in on Vern and the character spoke directly to the audience abut the night's story or some aspect of living with Margie. Then Margie's "portrait" got her turn as she spoke to the audience.The camera then pulled back to the original photos.
