As in Reign of Terror, Anthony Mann fashions a noir mini-masterpiece out of incongruous period reconstruction.

The director Anthony Mann fleshes out the intricate story with vigorous and subtle attention to its disparate elements—political, psychological, and brutal.

Ingeniously and inventively plotted, taut and unpretentious, the film dashes along at a furious pace, with a strong period feel and nicely understated performances, well served by Mann's straightforward direction.

Mann understands that mood is more important than plausibility in a thriller, and you could cut the mood here with a knife.

Maybe not Oscar material but a very enjoyable piece of entertainment.

Unless the three authors of this picture have access to some new and startling source, there is no basis other than legend for the silly murder plot unfolded here.
