Did nothing for the careers of the actors

John Garfield is an intern who cares for a young accident victim in "Dangerously They Live," also starring Nancy Coleman, Raymond Massey, and Moroni Olson.

This looks like a B movie and is certainly short enough to have been a second feature. This is what Warners put John Garfield in after he made a big splash in "Four Daughters?" Jack Warner must have been punishing him for something.

The accident victim in this film, Jane Graystone, played by Coleman, is thought to have amnesia. She is actually a spy for the U. S., and the Nazis are after information she has about a convoy in New Zealand.

Moroni Olson poses as her father, a Mr. Goodwin, but she tells Dr. Lewis (Garfield) the true story and asks for his help. Garfield is a little waylaid, however, when one of his teachers, Dr. Ingersoll (Raymond Massey) appears as a doctor on the case.

He doesn't realize Ingersoll is part of the Nazi team. Ingersoll allows Dr. Lewis to come "home" with Jane - but home seems more like a prison.

Massey turns in an excellent performance and is quite scary as Ingersoll. Coleman, who went on to have a career in television, is pretty, reminiscent of Barbara Rush or Piper Laurie in their youths. However, she's not as good an actress as either of those women.

Garfield is appealing but this is not his kind of role. It would be a few more years before he would be given parts more suited to his abilities. Fortunately, he'd have about five years of excellent roles before the blacklist and his early death.

Though the movie was made right before Pearl Harbor, the handwriting was on the wall for the U. S. The theme of Nazis in our midst was in several films of that time, including "All Through the Night."

    Awful

This movie should have been right up my alley. I love John Garfield. And love WW2 stories. But the tone is absolutely dopey. The terrible music is wall to wall. And the lead actress is one dimensional. Instead of being a Hitchcock it plays out with the depth of a 50s sitcom. Even Garfield looks lost and embarrassed. The worst part is that beats are played out over and over again. It's flat, silly, repetitious. The real culprit driving the badness is the actress. Nancy Coleman is it? She has no nuances. Delivers everything the same way. Painful. No wonder she didn't make it. Anyway that's enough.

    wartime thriller

In New York City, mysterious men maneuver Jane Graystone (Nancy Coleman) into a specific taxi. It's a kidnapping but it goes wrong when the taxi gets into an accident. She is brought to the hospital where Dr. Mike Lewis (John Garfield) treats her for amnesia. She's faking. She reveals that she's actually a British agent being pursued by Nazi agents for secret information in her head.

It's a wartime espionage thriller. It's interesting to have this vast Nazi network but it does leave the question of why they don't just kill him. It's also a bit questionable that she is able to hold out against interrogation. I guess they can't actually show them torturing her. I like the threatening atmosphere but it doesn't really feel real. It's not really realistic but it's enough as a wartime thriller for the hungry masses weeks after Pearl Harbor.

Unworthy of Garfield and Massey...little more than a potboiler...

You can skip this one unless you're determined to see every Warner Bros. movie about spies and Nazis that the studio ever made. That's about the only reason for sitting through this turkey, despite a cast that includes such stalwarts as JOHN GARFIELD, RAYMOND MASSEY and NANCY COLEMAN, all of whom must have wished they were not floundering in a weak script.

Garfield looks and acts like a hood, but he's supposed to be a respectable doctor taking care of a patient who claims to have amnesia. (The amnesia theme got quite a workout throughout the '40s as a convenient plot device). But here it turns out that the woman patient (Coleman) is only pretending to have amnesia because some Nazi spies are hot on her trail.

When Garfield allows her to be taken to a private sanitarium where she will be taken care of by the seemingly helpful Raymond Massey, he soon discovers that the house she is sheltered in is really a place for her to be kept prisoner until she divulges some wartime secrets.

There's a little suspense in all of this, but none of the performers seem to be in top form and Garfield seems ill at ease in his doctor role.

Summing up: Not quality stuff. Has all the earmarks of a quickly produced potboiler.

    Remember Tomorrow

Working for a British group, pretty Nancy Coleman (as Jane) is kidnapped in a New York cab. An unexpected car accident lands her in the temporary safety of a hospital, under the care of unlikely intern John Garfield (as Michael "Mike" Lewis). Mr. Garfield wants to investigate Ms. Goodman because he's interested in amnesia cases. Garfield becomes even more intrigued when Coleman tells him she's not really forgetful, but being pursued by Nazi spies. Coleman doesn't want to go home with the man claiming to be her father, but he produces family pictures proving she's her daughter.

Psychic amnesia expert, and former Garfield professor, Raymond Massey (as Ingersoll) is hired as head shrink, by the wealthy Goodwin family. They have trouble getting "daughter" Coleman to return home, so Mr. Massey suggests Garfield come along as in-house physician. Garfield thinks their mansion is beautiful, but Coleman says it's a "concentration camp." It's really too bad "Dangerously They Live" makes it clear who the bad guys are, because this picture had greater potential.

Marion Parsonnet's story should have received a better treatment. It has a Hitchcockian sensibilities, but squanders much suspense potential. Imagine, for instance, a little re-writing and re-editing to make the moment Garfield receives the "Get the girl out of here - she is in grave danger" note the moment you KNOW, for sure, who is telling the truth. And, it would have been easy to adjust Garfield's "intern" character (and wardrobe) to more flatter the actor. He does as well as possible with the assignment, however. Robert Florey's direction, Coleman's debut performance, and Massey are impressive.

This film was released into theaters on Christmas Eve, 1941 - only seventeen days after Japan attacked the US Navy in Pearl Harbor and Manila, effectively pushing the US into WWII.
    • Errores
When Dr. Lewis tries to go up the stairs to the third floor of the house, he is stopped by Eddie holding a gun. When he comes back down the stairs, a large, distinct, moving shadow of the boom microphone can be seen on the well-lit wall behind him. (The same shadow can be briefly seen when he ascends the stairs, too.)
