YA – or Young Adult – books are not only popular amongst teenagers. Over time, the genre has become a staple for readers of all ages, and it has inspired a variety of movies and television shows. With the latest Hunger Games novel hitting shelves this week, it seems prudent to look back on some of the best fantasy films and shows adapted from YA novels.

The genre has long represented teenagers and the embarrassing, sometimes horrific, trials of young adulthood. For those who once wandered their school hallways without clear direction, these novels continue to offer an escape, or a way of being seen and relating to others across time and distance.

Edward, Bella, and Jacob's love triangle in The Twilight Saga continues to be one of the most iconic romances of the century, but the franchise was not without its flaws. The fantasy series built a new world with supernatural creatures and its own rules, which was what pulled fans in at first glance. However, certain plot twists and events in the sagaturned fans off so much that they never looked back at the series again.

Some of these moments portrayed Bella in a rather sad light as she pined over Edward, which made fans lose interest as her perspective was the most important one in Twilight. The vampire-werewolf franchise captivated fans with its love story, but there is a reason why Twilight gets a lot of flak. The vampires, or Cold Ones, were basically invincible, and they had additional mental and physical abilities that made them super strong in the face of other supernatural beings.

While the vampires had their immortality and powers, the werewolves or shapeshifters in Forks were blessed with raw power. Their strength lay in their transformation into vicious wolves, and their unity as a pack made them even stronger than the vampires, most times. The Twilight Saga may have set a precedent for vampire romances, but the movies were a breeding ground for unhealthy relationship dynamics. From Bella and Edward's problematic relationship to supporting characters who did nothing for the narrative, the popular cult classic did not withstand the test of time. The growth associated with several characters, including their knack for making questionable choices, did not align with modern standards in certain aspects.

Whether it was Bella's overall attitude to handling a teenage affair or her mother being extremely naïve and irresponsible, it's difficult to pronounce the Twilight movies as anything more than a guilty pleasure indulgence. Having said that, fans would definitely agree that when it came to being utterly unbearable, some Twilight characters were ahead of the others.
