Brian McGrath is jilted by his sweetheart and wants to die and leave her free to marry. But if he kills himself, a suicide clause in his insurance policy will prevent her from getting the money. He hires Tony Loffo to do a good job of finishing him off. Them while suffering a loss-of-memory, he meets Susan and marries her. Joe Redmond, a crusading radio reporter, is baffled by his inability to find an angle on Luffe, the infamous head of a murder ring operating within the city. Charging the police with incompetence, Joe sets out to find the criminal himself. Joe's roommate, Brian McGrath, a moody young novelist, is so depressed over being jilted by his sweetheart that he wants to die. If he commits suicide, however, a clause in his insurance policy will prevent his sweetheart from collecting on his insurance. Because McGrath wants her to have the money, he visits "Gimpy" Darnell, a bartender at a waterfront saloon, and gives him $1,000 to hire two of Luffe's hit-men to bump him off. Another $1,000 deposited in a post office box will be paid when the boys complete the job. Roaming the city that night, waiting for death to strike, McGrath gets into a fight while trying to protect a girl and is knocked cold. The girl, Susan, takes the unconscious novelist to his apartment, where she meets Joe and quarrels with him. When McGrath awakens the next day, he remembers nothing, not even his own name. Joe indifferently advises him to see a doctor and then turns his attention to the Luffe case. Later, Susan visits McGrath to see how he is getting along, and the pair discover a mutual attraction. With all his imagined worries purged from his mind, McGrath falls in love with Susan and marries her. Trailing them to the altar are Luffe's gun men, Tony and Bull, who are waiting to finish their job. Deliriously happy, McGrath suddenly regains his memory and realizes that he may be shot down at any minute. While attempting to find Luffe to cancel the deal, McGrath visits Deedee Doree, a nightclub entertainer and reputed moll of the killer. Deedee gets the novelist drunk and learns that Tony and Bull have been cheating on the boss. When Susan sees Deedee and McGrath together, she begins to pack her things and leave, but Joe persuades her that Deedee is involved in a murder ring and McGrath is in serious danger. Together, Joe and Susan trail Bull and Tony to Luffe's hideout in the country. In a rousing fight, Joe captures Luffe and his gunmen, thus scoring the scoop that he has been seeking. With the murder ring smashed McGrath and Susan face a happy life together.
